Good afternoon, gang. Some light snow and flurries continue to push across he region today, in what is likely just a preview of what’s to come. It’s an extreme winter pattern taking shape for much of the country, with the exact impacts on our weather still being ironed out.
One thing is for sure… This pattern is frigid and will be the coldest extended period since the winter of 2013/14. It might be a good time to winter proof those pipes. 😉
Today’s flakes come at us in streaks from west to east…
Some very light accumulations are possible in a few areas.
Arctic air settles in overnight, with single digit lows showing up across northern Kentucky and teens everywhere else. Highs on Wednesday may not get out of the teens in the north…
The late week light snow potential continues to largely be a small event, with the main chance across the east on Friday…
You can already see the next streak of light snow diving in from the northwest. That arrives by Friday night on the GFS…
The model continues to take the next system and turn it into a snowstorm as we close out 2017 and welcome 2018…
Here’s the animation of all that…
The GFS has that snow system moving in with temps in the teens.
We also find the GFS continuing to go crazy with the cold, showing multiple days of below zero temps next week…
The Canadian Model places more emphasis on the snow system diving in here on Saturday, blowing it up into a nice snow maker. It then turns things so cold, it suppresses the next system…
The Canadian goes absolutely nuts with the cold…
It is also showing multiple days with temps going below zero.
My take:
- Bitterly cold temps are very likely through next week. There is an increased threat for temps to go below zero on, at least, one occasion.
- This will likely become the longest period of bitter cold we’ve had since 2013/1014.
- Wind chills have a chance to get into the danger category at some point.
- It’s likely we will put some snow on the ground this weekend. It’s too early to tell how much we can get. That all depends on if we can get the southern stream involved.
I will have updates on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm and will throw out another update later on.
Make it a great afternoon and take care.
Busy time for the Weather Guys.
Thanks for the update Chris! I’m really hoping we can eat that southern stream involved in that late weekend system and that it doesn’t get suppressed too far south. Bring on the snow!
Local met here in southern ohio says the weekend storm will trend nor heard bringing frezz rain and rain to southern ohio and rain to Kentucky and Tennessee.
CB is posting thoughts and not a forecast. Models have not exactly been peaches for about outlooks. On that note, areas of Pennsylvania have been buried with 54″ of snow and more on the way.
Lake effect snow
Yes. Go 30 miles and there maybe no snow on the ground.
Bingo
At least no ice is forecasted 😉
Dilly dilly!
We have a better chance for an ice storm than a snowstorm, as the cold air is shallow.
That cold sounds dangerous for old folks like me. If it isn’t going to snow a foot or more, I’ll take what we got now.
Thanks Chris. Always nice to see possibilities! Now if a good one would come to fruition that would be nice too. Have a great afternoon everyone.
Chris, I remember last October one of your analog years was 2013. You nailed it. I recall I nearly froze to death from that awful dry, frigid air in 2013. We didn’t have a flake of snow with that cold spell, and I believe this will be the same. With this type of Arctic air coming, I hope we don’t set up a over running event, which translates to an ice event, which translates to no electricity for weeks like late January 2009 ice storm. Lets all pray this doesn’t happen.
Nothing but a couple flurries forecast in the Huntington/Ashland area thought Sunday. Not looking real good for tri-state snow lovers.
Yeah, but the models are saying snow! 😉
Perhaps Cb should start adding LOL’s going across any model snow outlooks… Seems fitting 🙂
As usual GFS and Euro miles apart..Never seen a model struggle so bad as the GFS has so far..Guess you could say this for all models..Will bet what the GFS is showing for Jan.1st will be gone by tonight or tomorrow..About all you can say is heating bills are going up and way up looking at the cold..
Agree, gfs and it’s ensembles have been terrible this season. And the Canadian hasn’t been right since the battle of Hastings. If the Euro doesn’t show the storm five days out, then it’s likely curtains. Though would love to be proved wrong.
The only thing for certain here is that LG&E/KU/PPL Corp. execs and stockholders will be the only ones reaping benefits via large undeserved bonuses…
Wasted cold air, sounds familiar, may be an inch before the warm up?
Please just kill some bugs!!!!
Cold want kill the bugs, but drought in the spring will. Everyone get a snow making machine that’s the only way we will see any. Mother nature will likely bring us ice.
