Good afternoon, gang. Bands of light snow are putting down enough accumulations to cover roads in some areas, leading to slick travel conditions. Behind this, we get another light snow system on Sunday, with brutally cold temps to follow.
The light snow is overachieving in some areas, with the potential for a local half to one inch showing up. With a frozen ground, snow has NO problem coating or covering roads. Throw some friction from traffic into the mix, and you’re going to get some roads to become skating rinks. This might be a good time for a short-fused Winter Weather Advisory for a few areas.
I will have your tracking tools in a bit.
The bitter cold comes crashing in behind this later today, with temps dropping through the teens from north to south. Wind chills will reach -5 at times by late evening. Those wind wills should be in the zero to -10 range Sunday morning with actual temps in the single digits.
Another snow streak comes through the northern half of the state on Sunday, leading to the potential for something similar to today.
Temps are going to be brutal from this point. Highs are generally in the teens from Sunday-Tuesday, with a few areas barely into the teens. Overnight lows go like this:
- Monday morning will see temps from 0 to -5 in the north and 0 to 5 above for much of the rest of the state. Wind chills will be solidly below zero.
- Tuesday will be the coldest with the potential for readings in the far north to get as low as -10. The rest of the state should go from -5 to +5. Wind chills range from -5 to -15 at times.
- This is dangerous stuff and you should take all weatherproofing precautions now.
Wednesday finds another arctic front diving in here and that could produce some light snow, with the chance for some northwesterly flow snow showers into Thursday. This will unleash ANOTHER brutally cold shot that could rival the early week numbers.
Let’s get back to today’s light snow and track it all…

I will have another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. I’m guessing us south central, and se Kentucky weather lovers are going to have to keep dreaming. Stay warm everyone.
Sure enough about a week from now models finally show a storm and we are in the 40’s with rain . Unbelievable!
Yep, afternoon GFS showing a mainly rain event Jan 9-10. Another PATHETIC winter. Rodger would rather it be 65 instead of 20 degrees and no snow. I guess the pretty snow showers on Christmas Eve were the tops for this winter season. Rodger in Dodger
So you believe the models two weeks out when there is rain, but not snow. Models are no good until the NAM picks them up. 2-3 days at best.
Winter has just begun.
Models forecasting rain two weeks out are unfortunately more reliable than they are predicting snow five days away. Climatologically speaking, our chances favor rain anyway.
There’s still the potential this storm could ride the fence in Kentucky. Things can always trend colder—and with a rock solid frozen ground, it’s going to take a long time to warm up. Models are going to severely underestimate the low level cold air in place and they’re not taking that into account all the way into Jan 9-10th.
Heavy dusting out there today in Kenova,WV but this frigid cold weather is tough to take! I’m sure the gas and electric companies are loving it though! Thanks for the continuous updates, Chris. You do a great job!
Saw on weather channel that after Arctic temps for first week of January that their will be above normal temps for the rest of January and the beginning of February.
Well, Rodger doesn’t put much faith in the Weather Channel, BUT after this drastic cold, a snap to above normal temps is very likely. Look for a warm January after the 9th, and that takes us to February and maybe 4-6 weeks left for measurable snow … maybe. That’s why this cold and dry is painful. Rodger in Dodger
I think Chris said in his winter outlook that their would be above normal temps heading into February and that February would have above normal temps.
9 days into winter and y’all are writing it off. Chill LOL!
Yes!
Agreed! Lol
this reminds me of winter 84, not much snow but bitter cold weather, we had wind chills of 50 below that year with no snow on the ground.
look it up
1989 was also very cold with little snow.
Team #FestiveFlakes FTW
Winter just began. Expect snow and be positive rather than seeing and speaking negative.
Expect is a strong word, Lucy. You’re the one who likes to carry the football—and then pull it out from under us when we get ready to kick it. I’ve never seen a fictional character who likes to see bruised backsides more than you do.
Expecting anything can get you in a lot of trouble. I’d rather use the word “hope” instead.

People are saying keep calm about snow but I can’t help but think I’m with the rest of you I think we’re wasting all the cold air now we’ll probably get a little snow this winter but I put emphasis on little.we will probably get snow and the next day or that afternoon it’s gone and think about it we can’t even get a clipper with this cold pattern I’m in western part of Kentucky we haven’t had anything yet this winter except cold and amazingly dry if it was summer we would be in serious drought
Last week saved our butts as that was the only rain event, at least in SE KY, over the last about 6 weeks.
