Good Monday and Happy New Year! Let me start out by wishing each of you an absolutely amazing 2018. I appreciate you guys more than you know and I’m planning some big things on the blog for the year ahead. This will blow your mind, but KWC turns 10 years old this summer. WOW! Anyone up for a blog party? 🙂
Bitterly cold temps are here and will last through the week and into the start the upcoming weekend. I’ve set the stage for this for the past few weeks, but let’s hit the highlights:
- Highs today will be in the teens, with the north barely getting past 10 degrees. Wind chills will be near zero for much of the day.
- Leftover light snow will be noted early this morning, with several roads likely snow covered to begin the day. Never underestimate the snow making power of a northwesterly wind around here. Unfortunately, many keep doing just that.
- Tonight into Tuesday morning will be brutal. Lows across the state a generally from -5 to +5, but north can drop as low as -10.
- Wind chills tonight and Tuesday morning generally range from -5 to -15. Brutal.
A major east coast winter storm may bring snow all the way from the southeast coast into New England. That has the potential to turn into a full blown blizzard.
That’s too far east for a direct impact on our weather, but it will give us a VERY strong northwest wind by Wednesday night through Friday. Look at the flow from the NAM on Thursday morning…
That amp shows the flow right off the Great Lakes into Kentucky and shows the low level relative humidity. Throw in bitterly cold temperatures and you can get widespread snow showers and squalls out of that. You won’t get the models to pick up very well on that until we get closer, because there isn’t very much actual QPF involved.
That said, the NAM is already picking up on this for Wednesday night…
A potent upper level system then dives into our region by late Thursday and Friday…
That may very well produce another light snowfall across much of our region. With the bitter cold in place, it won’t need much moisture to produce snow.
Speaking of the bitter cold, temps from Thursday through Sunday continue to show up as cold or colder than right now. Wind chill numbers may actually be even lower.
Temps rebound some later Sunday and Monday as a storm system rolls our way. The trend toward colder is already underway on the models, with the European leading the charge…
As we get closer to that, and the models keep seeing the amount of dense arctic air in front of it, watch for more of a south trend to show up.
The European Model then brings ANOTHER brutally cold air mass into the country, with the position of the coldest air farther west. That would open us up to more systems potentially undercutting the cold…
I will have updates as normal later today. Happy New Year and take care.
Have a solid coating here in Northern Pulaski County!
Happy new year to you and your family thanks for all you do for us
Just want a good two foot snow!
I wanna wish everybody back in Kentucky a Happy New Year.
Snowing in Corbin, but nothing on radar. Super cold artic air does strange things I guess
Happy new year yes on blog party.
2 degees in Frankort, wow
Reached a low of 6 at 1:30. It warmed up to 12 and gave us our 2nd biggest snow in 2 seasons
Snowing in Harlan. …about 1/4 inch so far:)
Just a sugar coating here the blows away with traffic.
-9 here in Athens ohio with a 2.5″ snow covet
Yea here in Jackson Ohio I had -7 below. Same amount of snow on the ground. Cold.
Thanks Chris, and happy New Year to you and your family, and everyone at wkyt in Lexington, Kentucky. Also, a happy New Year to all the commentators on Chris’s weather blog. Chris, we appreciate all your hard work keeping us informed on weather events through out the year. I myself have learned more about meteorology since I join the blog almost a year ago. Chris, you are a great educator of meteorology. Everyone, make it a great day.
No snow to report here in Taylor County with a temperature of nine degrees. December, 2017 at my residence we had one good rain event, about two inches, and no accumulating snow events. Just a long, cold dry period, which looks to continue for several days into the new year.
Happy New Year Chris and to all my fellow KWC friends. Hard to believe it has been 10 years. Wow how time flies. Hope we can get this cold to moderate a bit and we can get some snow flying. In the meantime I guess we will have to enjoy the frigid temps and festive snow flakes, if your even getting any. Hope everyone has a great 2018.
Happy New Year CB! Wow 10 years! Congrats!
Oh, on a side note, if you live in the Louisville area, and I like to get out and embrace the cold, make a trip over to The Falls of the Ohio. When it is this cold, It is typically and winter wonderland with all the mist freezing to everything it touches just below the dam. Can make for a neat little hike.
AND……LOL….a party sounds great as long as your bringing the SNOW.
Rodger wishes Mr Bailey a great 2018. It’s slowly looking better for snow in Rodger’s backyard – hoping for a foot! Rodger in Dodger
Happy New Year CB! Wow, 10 years? I’ve followed the blog for 9, and enjoyed every moment. My dad down in Georgia follows too, and we have some great discussions. He’s a retired meteorologist, and admires your work.
Wooohoooo! Happy New Year everyone!!!! I love this blog and the community that follows!
Nice surprise to wake up to a good covering of snow at my house this morning…. Thanks Chris I really enjoy your blog!
Happy New Year Chris, thanks for your dedication to keeping us informed and congrats on the 10 years!!
I will retire tomorrow (Tuesday) so it would be very nice to sit in my LAZ-Y-BOY and watch it snow for the rest of January. I like the Euro for next week showing the cold shifting west, giving a southern storm the possibility of turning up the Appalachian mountains and blessing us with snow. HAPPY RETIREMENT TO ME!
Congrats Tom! Hope you get a retirement Apps runner.
Congrats on your retirement Tom! I hope you get to give that Lazyboy a good workout watching snow!
Rodger wishes you Happy Retirement!
Thanks to all!
It is a frozen desert in Kentucky.
Thsnks Chris. YES to a blog party! And CONGRATS on 10 years! I’ve been right there with you as have many others I’ve seen this morning. Time does fly when you are having fun doesn’t it? This weather would be sweeter if we could get some decent snow. We have a sugar coating here this morning. Nice way to start the new year. But I must admit, I am greedy….I want more. Last scheduled day off until Memorial Day so I’m gong to relax, watch college football, and enjoy it!Happy New Year my KWC friends! Here’s hoping this year is filled with love, laughter, and blessings for all!
So looks like another winter of no good snows. Just some flurries and squalls and bitter cold.
Hope everyone has a great 2018. Stay warm!
I know Arctic cold air is difficult to scour out at the surface, but that’s where a decent snowpack could make a difference as we set up for an interesting weekend/early next week event.
I’m thinking the south is gonna be in the weather headlines again for snow/ice! This time on east coast from Florida up the coast to VA. Beach ! Probably gonna see video of snow at Savannah, Myrtle Beach, Tybee island, and so on up the coast, maybe even in Jacksonville Florida!!
Thanks for all you do Chris and Happy New Year! I can’t believe it has been 10 years for the blog. I read it everyday. I live in Northern Jackson County Ohio. Your blog is often more accurate than the local weather forecasts. I am on your bandwagon about the local weather bureau. We are in the donut hole again. I pity you all who are having cold wind chills today. It was a nice toasty 0° this morning. Oh, we did have a special weather statement yesterday. It was a high pollen alert for ragweed. If only we could find it under the snow. I am all about the blog party! Thanks for all you do. It supposed greatly appreciated!!!! Please keep us in Southern Ohio in mind when you do your forecasts, even though I know it is not your main focus. I know of a lot of people here who read your blog and you are the best forecasts we get. ☕
Happy New Year Chris and fellow commenters. Low of 3 just east of Huntington. Bright and beautiful here.
3 degrees in Lexington this morning. A “decorator” covering of snow. Still, the coldest morning since March of 2015 when Lexington hit -2 with over a foot of snow on the ground.
