Good afternoon, everyone. The phrase “bitterly cold” doesn’t really capture the depth of just how cold it was across the state this morning. Temperatures hit below zero in just about every county in the state. Take a look at the Kentucky Meonet low temps…
That’s absolutely astounding, considering many of us do not have snow on the ground. Wind chills were much colder than that, pushing -10 to -20 at times in some areas. The NWS in Wilmington, Ohio finally issued a Wind Chill Advisory around 3:30 this morning, hours and hours after their readings had been well below the criteria. Serving the needs of the people and twitter trolling do not mix, folks.
Lows tonight won’t be as cold, but many areas should still hit the single digits, especially in the north.
A MAJOR winter storm will hit the southeast on Wednesday, rolling up the east coast as a blizzard for Thursday and Friday. How about snow from Florida to Maine….
Northwesterly winds will crank around here Wednesday night into Thursday, as arctic air dives into the region. That wind will produce some snow showers, especially across central and eastern parts of the state…
Some light accumulations will be possible, especially in the east. These snow showers will also be accompanied by another blast of bitterly cold temps. Lows by Thursday morning are deep into the single digits, with below zero wind chills again…
Similar conditions will be noted for Friday and Saturday mornings, but we will also need to watch for a potent upper level disturbance to swing across the state…
That can be a light snow and flurry maker to start the weekend.
We need to watch the late Sunday-Monday period for a messy situation possibly developing. The models are going to overestimate temperatures as precipitation is moving in. A mix and rain will be possible, but it will all be falling on a frozen ground and roads. Similar situations in the past have produced some icing on roads, and we will really need to be on guard for that.
Bitterly cold air will follow that up by Tuesday, with a few snow systems waiting in the wings.
I will have an update on WKYT starting at 4pm and will put out another update here later this evening. Make it a good one and take care.
I do believe this statement, “with a few snow systems waiting in the wings”.
The wings that fly right over Ky and go to other places.
Our wings are filled with cold, warm up to rain, then cold again, and flurry maker. I think you actually can buy Flurry Makers at Walmart.
Hey, it is what it is. Enjoy!
Fencetucky. Two years in a row with big snows and now perhaps two in a row with hardly any snow. Would not have guessed it, so will not jinx us and say, “Never three in a row”. I though we would not have two in a row. CB’s winter forecast made 100% sense, but so far for snow has not panned out as expected. Our luck is the other extremes CB outlooked for the second half of winter do pan out.
do Not pan out.
The “pattern” when it comes to winter precipitation is almost always 2 winters back to back. It’s not an exact science but I’m surprised Chris didn’t take that into consideration for his long range winter-cast.
No such thing as fences or domes. :/
But there’s always a ten-day GFS fantasy snowstorm, so there’s that. Like the 2500-mile long ice-maker that was predicted a couple of weeks ago.
Haha, true
No snowstorm for ky….warming up to rain maybe
I appreciate your expert analysis. LOL 😉
If the criteria is there for wind chill advisory, then why not issue one??? Don’t wait for the NWS to forecast it, take some initiative. You are blaming someone else for your mistakes. Please forecast some rain so that we can get a measurable snowfall around here.
Ummm … only the National Weather Service can issue official weather watches, advisories and warnings. Mr Bailey cannot. This is Rodger in Dodger
Dave, your comment from beginning to end makes no sense.
You can’t rationalize someone being irrational. Maybe dave is drunk.
His last sentence really through me for a loop.
I think that’s a shot at Chris forecasts.
Chris makes no mistakes especially in something over which he has no power. Stop being so foolish.
I am surprised that Chris gets frustrated by National weather Service not functioning properly. They are a government agency what else would you expect?
On the contrary, our NWS office in Morristown is great. I give them a lot of credit, and they have a very tricky forecast area.
Absolutely correct and has been the case since the office opened. For my area (TN/KY state line) the Morristown NWS is by far the most accurate weather source. Morristown NWS accurately forecast the 18″ snowfall 2 years ago here in Middlesboro/Harrogate while Jackson NWS was still saying 2″ total after 10″ had already fallen!! lol
They don’t issue the advisories for Harlan Co due to jurisdiction; however, they still cover Harlan in forecasts and do a great job, especially when almost the entire state is being slammed by a winter storm but the warm wedge keeps mix/rain down here!
So I guess the other 99% of NWS offices that did issue proper advisories as they should are doing a good job? Rodger in Dodger
It’s cathartic for CB to post his concerns here 🙂
Could the showers give a dusting or am inch for northeastern ky Wednesday night/Thursday?
Your forecasts hit us spot on and we live out on the ridge in one What, enjoy your blogs always!!
We live clear in One Wv., and your forecasts hit us spot on. Enjoy your blogs!!
One thing is for sure if storm is mentioned in the forecast it will be along with rain. And if there are any snow systems in the wings, they will probably be the dreaded backside flurries or a couple more I70 clippers.
Agreed
Not always
Lawd have mercy, if it ain’t gonna snow, bring back the 60 degree temperatures.
Yes NWS Wilmington. Nobody realized it was cold until 3:30 AM!
Life is like a box of chocolate never know what you gonna get. It’s only January 2nd folks.
But appears the box of chocolates is filled with 100% nasty jelly filled ones.
Jelly filled chocolates should be banned along with weekly outlook models.
Dave is with the NWS
You would think Chris would treat the Next Mon/Tues system more unknown than actually thinking it was going to be a mix/rain with frozen ground. If he were talking about a snowstorm potential that far out, wouldn’t he be like “this is still a LONG ways off and many things could change with each run”….and yet, 6 days from now, he words it with somewhat of a confidence. LOL
Common saying is Ice is certain if on the models.
We’ve been well below freezing for almost two weeks now. It’s going to take more than an hour or two of above freezing temperatures to thaw the ground out, even when it does get above freezing.
If we can get a prolonged period of time with temps above freezing prior to precipitation moving in, we can minimize ice impact. However, if the precip is overrunning in nature, ice to begin the event is almost certain.

The short term is bleak regarding snow. Hopefully that changes soon….
Maybe we should move to FL since they appear fly get more snow than us anymore. 😉
Apparently not appear fly.
I always get a laugh, when I see wintry mix in my forecast. I have very rarely seen one. About 99% of the time it is just a fancy way of saying cold rain in the Winter season. A wintry mix almost never turns out to be mostly snow.
