Good evening, folks. It’s another bitterly cold night out there, but the focus of the forecast is on the winter weather potential coming in for late Sunday and Monday. It’s a setup that can lead to all modes of precipitation.
My overall thoughts have not changed, and I don’t really expect much change. The only thing left to fine tune is how much moisture can fall in each form. Here’s my current look of what to expect…
The individual threats look like this…
With the frozen ground, icy roads are pretty much a given from later Sunday evening into, at least, the first part of Monday.
If you plan on traveling during this time, you may want to consider altering those travel plans around the worst of the weather.
Earlier today, I outlined another winter weather threat pattern by the end of next week into next weekend. The models are showing this threat. Here’s the latest GFS…
Enjoy your evening and take care.
i do not like freezing rain at all chris.the other i can handle.
Go get your bread tomorrow.
We shall see what happens here, looks to be a mess and possible snow day here in LOU on Monday. Hopefully more snow than ice? ❄️❄️❄️
See? Whose laughing now?! Ice, ice, baby… 😉 Seems the gradient will be higher, the further north. Surprised by the uniform map estimate.
Still, hoping for mainly cold rain. Good thing though not more moisture, since could be worse.
I just want the salt to wash away.
Seems should be light, so a quick melt. If was a lot of moisture, the spread on the map would not be so uniform. Interesting how much is frozen and still probably correlates with being more north. Still seems mainly cold rain, but I’m an optimist 😉
You want cold rain?
Okay then….
Don’t forget, the ground is frozen.
Next weekend’s system could be ugly for KY. The GFS 18z run looks even more ominous than the 12z run.
For snow I hope!!
Nope. CB’s snow outlook missed the front loaded snow for winter, but this Sunday could begin the other type of extreme. If we get ice this Sunday/Monday, that could be a harbinger of the other extremes beginning to pan out.
I would not be betting on snow this winter, but admittedly a poor gambler.
Will we experience the dreaded Northwest Shift on next week’s system??? It looks too good from 7 days out.
00z runs colder still for the upcoming weekend storm
Vanilla Ice approved.
Where do I look to see this? Thanks.
At this point you want snow–not rain.
The ground is frozen over 9 inches deep.
That’s not something that thaws out at the snap of a finger. Forty degrees is going to do next to nothing to melt things in a few minutes…it will take hours, if not a day or two…to completely thaw out….at that temperature.
You want snow.
Otherwise, you will get ice–unless you live in far southern Kentucky. Even there, the ground has had plenty of time to freeze.
There will be more clouds than precipitation will this weak storm moving out of the southern plains into the southeast.
