Good evening, folks. Our winter weather maker is pressing into the region from west to east, setting the stage for icy roads, sidewalks and parking lots to develop overnight. That will then take us through the first half, at least, of Monday.
I haven’t seen anything to change my overall thought process on the possibilities with this event…
Temps will drop as precipitation moves in, leading to a mix of freezing rain, snow, sleet and rain. Ground and road temps are still deep into the 20s, so anything that falls will turn into ice, regardless of the air temp.
The late day GFS was just a smidge colder, leading to the model showing a slightly better snow signal…
The NAM continues to show all forms of precipitation, with a heavier emphasis on freezing rain. The map below is not a pure snow map, but instead, shows more of the winter weather potential…
I think that is overdone across western Kentucky.
Travel conditions go downhill overnight and early Monday, especially across central and eastern Kentucky. Untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots may become skating rinks.
I continue to keep a close eye on the late week system, and the ensuring setup behind it into early next week. There’s an increased threat for some kind of Ohio Valley winter storm…
Let’s get through this first mess, then we can concentrate more on that potential.
I have you guys all set to track, but please use caution with the precipitation coding on radars. They’re not going to fully capture the location and different forms of precipitation. Also, don’t be fooled by the air thermometer when traveling. Roads can still be icy with temps above freezing.
Track away…

Oh, I’m so hoping for a big old school snow!!!
I’ve got sleet in LouMetro on my deck near Iroquois Park. It’s sticking to deck furniture.
I am in the east end of Louisville, near Oldham not seeing any frozen stuff just yet. Husband is supposed to fly out early tomorrow heading to Chicago. That should be interesting.
Roads have been salted and brimmed solid white here in middle/SE TN where temperatures just made it to mid 30’s today and are in the upper 20’s now..this area is very notorious for trapping low-level cold should be interesting tomorrow here..
Our roads have leftover salt from Thursday. The temps made it to 40 and are sitting at 34 now. I checked the surfaces and they are showing 25 degrees.
Temp is up to 36
Thanks Chris. Take care and stay safe weather buddies.
Chris,
Can you tell us what time to expect this in the Lexington area?
Currently 28 degrees here in far eastern KY 8:04 pm
At 7:55 pm the Clays Ferry Bridge over the KY River had these numbers— Air 36.7 Pavement 29.3 Subsurface 28.9 Be careful out there as it could get nasty in a short period of time, especially with any dynamic cooling.
Some locations could see up to 0.30″ of ice, but that should be the exception rather than the rule. I’m still hoping for a little snow mixed in, myself.
A general 0.10 to 0.20″ of ice is possible across the board on average.
We’ve got sleet just starting in shepherdsville 🙂 !!
There it is again…the most overused word in the Kentucky winter dictionary…”potential” next weekend.
Goes the other way too. This event is similar to the ice storm of 2008, but thankfully not enough moisture to be an ice storm. That said, our luck might run out next week.
The only potential is for “The Dreaded Backside Flurries”. If I never hear those words along with Clipper and Northwest Flow, It will be too soon.

37° here in Covington at 10:14 pm. Let’s see how this plays out
39′ here in Louisville-east end. Nothing frozen in sight…yet.

35 degrees w/ dewpoint of 23 and some light rain that just began a few minutes ago in Covington, KY. My road and sidewalks are just wet.
Down to 22 degrees here.
