Good afternoon, my fellow weather weenies. Light snow and flurries continue to slowly pull away from the region, as frigid temps settle back in for another extended run. This will be complete by another snowfall that, for many of us, add up to more than the underachiever of last night. 🙂
Temps today are struggling to get to 20 degrees with wind chills in the single digits. Areas of flurries and light snow are also out there…
Single digit lows show up tonight, with Sunday’s highs back into the low 20s.
An arctic front moves in late Monday into Tuesday with a very small wave of low pressure along it…
Those snows typically fall just behind the front and are generally widespread 1″-3″ amounts, with locally higher amounts in the mountains. Winds of 30mph will accompany the front, blowing the arctic flakes around.
Bitterly cold air comes in behind this, potentially sending lows to around zero or below…
Wind chills will be solidly below zero for a few days…
For those of you who follow me, you know it’s not too far away from the time of the year when I become a full blown spring fan. I start looking for warm ups and there is another coming by next weekend, but it doesn’t last too long…
I will try to hook you guys up with another update later this evening. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. Hope you got some rest. We definitely have the cold! It’s 19 here in Somerset. ( at least at our house). Have a good afternoon everyone and Go Cats!
23 here in Knox County haven’t dropped any lower than 20 yet.
Looking at the end of this post Chris is done with winter and ready for spring.
He isn’t as hardcore as he once was.
I am done too if this is is going to continue: Freezing pipes and no snow cover stinks! I received a out 1/4 inch last night in Harlan and dusting today with the lake effect flurries.
We are exactly half-way through meteorological winter thus weekend with Chris forecasting very little for the back-half of winter…we shall see.
Forgive the auto correct on the phone…smh
I’m done with it too if these extreme cold temps hang around. Yuck!!
A nice 3 inch snow fall last light in Frankfort, hope the fun is just starting, and also go Cats!
Chris, you can’t throw away winter just, yet!!! lol. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for a big one to roll out way!
*our
Finally got more snow than Louisville International. They only recorded 1.3″ yesterday while I got 2.0″. Yet some in the county looks like they got 3″.
It was crazy how spotty the snowfall was Mike…if you look on the NWS map of snowfall depth at 7am, you can see where there are a couple circles in east Louisville where there are 3 inch amounts. That’s where I am. I officially got 2.9 inches. Not surprised at all by the “official” Louisville snowfall of 1.3…most every single MET in Louisville and everyone else with some common sense knows that the airport is sitting on an heat island and is the worst place you could possibly have for an official snowfall and temp. Make a zero sense.
Scary thing is this: The actual GFS was almost correct a few days ago with showing disorganized higher and lower totals across the state, even though this wasn’t quite that varied as the final result for totals. We were all shacking our heads at the GFS a few days ago but now shacking our heads at this coming in under a mediocre system! Even SE KY was supposed to get 1 to 3 but a lot of us didn’t reach the inch:(
Get some rest, Chris! Whenever you say you are ready for Spring, you jinx us and we get snow!!! Is that your snow strategy??? Lol! Like sticking out your tongue at Mother Nature??!!! 🙂 Stay warm, everyone, and GO CATS!!!!!!
I think the comment of being ready for spring just comes from disappointment of not getting much snow. Surely, he doesn’t mean it. We have until mid March to get some good snows. Let us enjoy where we are and not wish time away.
I am so exhausted from tracking this event that I think I’ll just sleep through the clipper Monday into Tuesday LOL! It was a lot of fun though & very exciting anticipating, tracking, waiting (and a little tense too, worrying over everyone’s safety with the ice accumulations & the possibility of losing power, flooding & water main breaks we’ve been having). It was also educational & entertaining tracking here with my fellow weather weenies!

Bring Spring. By mid-February temps here in the southern part of the state cross 50 for average highs and that is when I consider outside temps to be comfortable. Spring temps are really not that far away.
Nobody can “bring spring”.
Spring? It’s the 13th of January. When exactly should winter happen? Before winter solstice people say, be patient it’s not yet winter and now not even two full weeks into January we are rooting for warmer temperatures? The solstice was less than a month ago. I’m so confused. Maybe we should add a fifth season, pre-spring or something, and force winter into the days between Christmas and New Year’s.
Yea, not too sure how anyone can get spring fever in January. Perhaps the end of February. I’m ready for Spring March 1st.
I’m ready for spring. I love winter but these extreme temps are making Florida look really good right now.
Pre-spring—lol!! Is that like the invention of tweens to describe age 10-12, s if simply being age eleven is not enough, the teen years need to be pushed on like an early spring?
I’m with Right as rain. Winter is just getting rolling! Go team snow!
I believe we are going to have very changeable weather through spring ,and I believe we will have many snow days to come. This spring could be very stormy. In other words much weather excitement to come.
Picked up about a half inch of snow in the past hour.
Had a great time out sledding in East LOU this afternoon with family and friends! I know we’ll have to make up the days, but more snow Monday night would be ‘snow’ much fun!
I #StandWithBailey Im already over the winter….BRING ON SPRING!!
Second half of winter looks warm with more thunderstorms than snow.
If there was a huge blizzard upon us, most would be thrilled. Anytime there is a snowstorm let down, there are wishes for spring posts for several days afterwards. Many snowstorms happen in February and March, but it’s not even halfway through January.
Exactly!
February is our snowiest month, and a lot of times March !
I for one, have looked forward to spring, since summer ended, and now that what was probably our biggest winter event, if you can even call it that, out of the way, things are looking good.
This was probably our best shot and was a snow dud for most folks. The little Monday clipper could give a lot of folks more than this did (not much, but still more). Next phase of winter (nearing) is potential spring-like storms.
CB’s feelings are understandable, since CANNOT trust the models for snow around Kentucky. Lucy’s football has no mercy.
You don’t know what could happen. Heck, back in 2015 no one predicted we would get TWO back-to-back major snowfalls, let alone one! Point being…we still have a long way to go before winter calls it quits.
Agreed
Here’s my bit…
The colder and snowier the better, December through February. The hotter the better, June through August. I love it below 0 and over 100. Spring and fall are wonderful. Not keen on big storms. I see that as hoping to see an auto accident on a drive.
I’m surprised Chris made that statement it’s only January 13th and yes the long range for rest of the is going to be above average as far temperature go, but when February comes there saying the cold spell will return only time tell
I know we get snow in February and March, but we also get quite a few days of nice temperature. It’s only about four weeks until mid-February, so not long until daytime highs start getting comfortable. Historically we are at the point of winter now where daytime high temps start to rise. This is the turning point of winter heading to spring right now.
And yet the months of February into early March Kentucky gets there best snow’s.
I don’t disagree with that. Had many good snows in those months but can’t deny that the transition to warmer weather had begun.
I’m for winter until about March 15th!!!!
Not sure I understand snow lovers who would want spring weather until then.
But many loser winters that we have I could relate it to being a UK FOOTBALL FAN and by week 6 you are looking foward to UK BASKETBALL…wanting the painful football to be over.
Thanks for the hard work and long hours Chris. I dont envy you in any way. Its not your fault winter dont have much snow regularly like it used too. 70s, 80s, and 90s were great lets party like its 1993 again.
Guys, please learn to separate what Chris wants vs. What he forecasts. They are not the same thing!!
Chris we got 6.5 inches of snow here in Grove city Ohio. It was like a Blizzard here Friday night. Love the blog keep up the good work.
Ldb, you must have been impacted by the superstorm. That was beyond amazing!!!!!!!
Yep. Huge snow no electric for two weeks. Walked 3 miles one way to town in two feet of snow. It was great. If you take time to prepare and enjoy its beauty nothing beats a great snow.
