Good Monday, folks. Our MLK holiday has rounds of light snow working across the state, causing slick travel to develop. That’s especially the case early this morning in the west and north, then again late today into tonight for the entire region.
This is a general 1″-3″ for much of the region through Tuesday, with local 4″ amounts possible as our front slows down. Northwest winds will also be able to squeeze out some flakes in this area through Tuesday night.
Bitterly cold temps tumble back in behind this front. Highs on Tuesday may only be in the 10-15 degree range for many, with wind chills making it feel zero or colder. Thermometer readings may be below zero on Wednesday morning, with wind chills pushing -10 or colder for some.
A break in the action comes this weekend. That’s when temps can hit the 60s for a day or so.
In the short-term, it’s all about t arctic snows out there today. Let’s do some tracking…

I will update things later today. Make it a great one and take care.
It makes me sad not seeing a first call map but this has a decent chance to cover the ground in SE KY.
All about location.
Sooner or later, we have to reach an inch Andy…we have to!
Here in Lex we already have about what we received Friday night with some more (hopefully) on the way but according to NWS L’ville central KY may get shorted yet again : (
Quote “It may seem a bit odd, but given the setup of the upper jet it feels like this system could slightly overachieve in our NW, underachieve in the center part of the CWA, and then slightly overachieve in our far SE. Will be interesting to watch how it all progresses.”
If we are are talking about Sunday night – Monday morning – zero new snowfall in Richmond. Holding strong at 1.5 inches from the last even and perhaps 2 inches for the year…
The radar acted like a dome was over us. Just like old times. Ah, memories! π Not expecting much from this, but maybe perhaps possibly thereβs a slight kind of chance we can get .75β by tomorrow. That would mean Richmond has 3β of total snow for the winter. That then would be 4β for the past two winters! Get your skis on!
I’m ready!
Thatβs known as the dome. Itβs BACK, baby! π π
Virga in Harlan this morning…not a flake fell but, in fairness, it wasn’t suppose down here with this warm front.
There is no dome nor fence.
Nice try, “Jeff”. We know this is probably Lucy, or one of her minions. You can spot footballs all day long, but we are wise to you! Of course, when the models look pretty again, we all look at them like somebody yelled, Squirrel! π π
Thanks Chris for this morning’s update. This Alberta Clipper ( upper level low ) may encounter some gulf moisture to enhance the snowfall totals in the south central to the southeastern part of the state as the arctic front slows down. Chances for a more significant snow event may occur after the warm up next weekend. I like the changeable versa the same o’l same o’l. Take care, and enjoy the day ahead.
I can agree with your statement in regards to changeable weather: A more amplified pattern spells stormier weather and CAN lead to winter storms in our region. Regardless, I don’t like boring weather which we suffered through back during that November to December stretch.
Here in Louisa we have at least a 1/2″ of new snowfall on the ground. And its still coming down pretty good.
Trying to figure out how much snow I’ve had this winter. How much is a dusting x3?
3-D…cool.
Thanks Chris. I hope this front has some white stuff with it to match the cold itβs reinforcing. Seems only right…. got the cold, need the snow! Have a good Monday everyone!
Roads are very slick in Flatwoods, KY this morning
Jackson is calling for 3-4 in here in southeast Ky. which would be much more impactful than this weekends storm.
In commemoration of the January 16-17, 1994 winter storm event, I downloaded a newspaper from western KY called Kentucky New Era and its take on that winter storm. I wanted another perspective besides where I live here in Louisville, which got it pretty bad. My purpose was all things weather. However, I could not help but notice some of the sporting news of the day. Pitino was coach at UK, Rod Rhodes had a great game against UT. The new number 1 was the Kansas Jayhawks. #3 Arkansas would eventually beat Duke for the national championship. In football, Dallas and Troy Aikman advanced to the NFC championship to play San Francisco by beating the Packers led by Brett Favre. Ironically, the former quarterback of the 49’ers Joe Montana led the KC Chiefs to the AFC championship game against Buffalo by beating Houston. Dallas would eventually beat Buffalo in the Super Bowl. Lawrence Taylor “LT” of the Giants retires after San Fran beats the Giants 44-3.
Thanks for the blast from the past, fun to look back in time.
MLK 1994 Snowstorm with totals : http://fox41blogs.typepad.com/wdrb_weather/2014/01/remembering-the-january-1994-record-snowcold.html
According to my count we have 0.2″ in my backyard the whole season in Knoxville TN. Yes, snows to the north, east, south and west. Luckily, SREF and all models say there’s a good chance at blasting this total by 10x with the clipper arriving.
You are just a short drive from the Smokey’s. The mountains usually have snow π Love me some Smokey’s π
You are right Bubba. The Smokey’s are a special place, and being from Australia, it is starkly different. My wife says if we ever leave Knoxville she’d miss the mountains the most. I’d agree. But the roads are generally cutoff during snow events, so I would have to book myself a cabin. Been thinking of doing that π .
Yep, it can be raining in Pigeon Forge and snowing several inches just two miles away in the mountains. Been stuck in a cabin before in the spring. Well, stuck for a few hours and it melted.
Nothing can beat the Blue Ridge, especially when the Rhododendrons are in bloom.
Your insane. The Shenandoah are 10 times more beautiful as the Blue Ridge and the Smokies are just as beautiful as the Shenandoah. I swear, I believe you have to disagree with everything everyone says. Geez.
You got me wrong. I just said the Blue Ridge had the beauty of the Rhododendrons. That is the only area I have visited back in 1975. I never been to though’s other areas you mentioned. I’am not insane and I try to get along with everyone that post on Chris’s blog, so calm down and enjoy the snow that’s coming.
About the same for a lot of us far SE KY folks….starved to death for snow as most are under an inch so far this season unless you live in the higher elevations. We will get ours….patience is a virtue!
Yep!!
Thelma Lou is excited at the prospects of getting more than we did with the Friday night system, here in Wayne County. She said she’s feeling a winner with this one. I told her not to count the money till all the boxes have been scratched off first.
So pretty much a bust for Berea???? I just want SNOW ….guess i need to move somewhere that gets feet of the white stuff…. lol
Is the snow on radar right now the possible snow -maker or will there still be a clipper tonight? About a 1/2 in in Harrison County overnight.
Northwestern Kentucky getting a nice round of moderate snow right now. Snow on snow is rare in these parts and Rodger is LOVING it! Rodger in Dodger
I woke up to close to a new inch of snow in Covington. The second batch that is on radar isn’t reaching the ground in Covington right now despite humidity near 80%. Very strange!
After more than an hour of radar showing snow over my location it has finally begun to flurry.
No snow map for 4+ inch snows in the viewing area? CB must be in spring mode. Lol
Yep, Rodger thought the same thing.
Either reverse psychology, or true spring fever π
No dome here in Western,ky getting a good snow show here
Fingers crossed for a couple inches tonight which would be my first measurable snow over a dusting in 2 years.
I was encouraging Andy above…we can get an inch finally! How sad: I am pep talking snow for an inch +, not a foot plus, but an inch plus:P
Seems the snow will mainly favor the same places as Friday (W & NW).
Had about an inch of snow just north of Ashland Ky earlier today…we need good weather for this afternoon to cut down a hickory tree! The models are showing good snowfall of perhaps 3 inches in our area by morning…very high ratio might get us past two but three is pushing it.
