Good afternoon, everyone. Flurries are slowly ending, as a cold northwesterly wind continues to blow across Kentucky. The focus going forward is on a series of systems, set to bring some snow to our part of the world.
The first system arrives Thursday into Thursday night in the form of a cold front. This front continues to get pushed through here very quickly because of the next set of systems coming in this weekend.
Because of that “push”, our rain to snow setup isn’t going to have much time to produce much in the way of snow accumulations. Watch how fast this blows through on the GFS…
The Canadian is similar…
That’s a shot of arctic air coming in behind this for Friday, with our weekend snow chances rolling in very quickly from late Saturday into Super Bowl Sunday, with another system on Monday.
Here’s the Canadian…
The GFS is very similar…
Accumulating snow is very likely this weekend into early next week. I will talk about that on WKYT-TV starting at 4, then with another update this evening.
Have a great rest of the day and take care.
Thanks Chris. Sounds like it’s going to get interesting! If it snows I hope it’s a good one! Have a great afternoon all!
Rodger’s not seeing a lot for snow lovers to get excited about. Maybe some heavy dustings. Hopefully wrong. Rodger in Dodger
Salt to snow ratio likely 1:1.
If all these systems are rain to snow with a warm up in between, then there isn’t much to get excited about. I was wondering about the artic air coming back for February. The national outlets have been on this for a week or more. But locals in WV aren’t having any of it. They keep saying the up and down 50’s to 30’s will continue for the near future.
A lot of them where saying really low temps if we got a snowpack in here before the weekend. That doesn’t look to be the case. Lows now dropping only into the teens now. I guess thats good for the electric bill.
I’m thinking if the temperature’s are in the teens, we would be getting a decent snowpack, right? I’m seeing forecasts of temperatures in the 40’s so my question is, will accumulating snow effect those temperatures therefore making it colder than forecasted and allowing more accumulation?
Here In Pennsylvania had a nice little snow last night got 6 in. This season total snowfall is at 67 inches and expecting more.
Had my fill pretty much already, so if not much more snow, I’m fine with it.
This. Just no mo’ salt. Seems there is already more than enough. Perhaps limit to hills and curves. Light dose- not too much.
Locally, there has been no salt or pre-treatment brine used thus far this season even with the huge surplus our city/county has, possibly because even those upslopes and clippers never come to fruition here.
Am I being too picky to wish for BFF’s? ( big fat flakes) I’m really missing a beautiful snow to enjoy from our hot tub. It’s been awhile since we have had a moisture packed snowfall and those glorious BFF’s.
A girl can only dream.
Have a great day everyone, thanks Chris!
This is going to turn out to be an “average” winter. Temps are really close to average so far, snowfall is really close to average so far. The snowiest month for Lexington, on average, is February with a little over 4 inches of snow. I say temps and snowfall remain close to average for February. Spring begins March 1, I say bring it on.
Seems we are well below average over the past two years. We went from 16 years of ankle biters and one calendar year of three record snows to nothing last year and most not much this year….. Not sure really how an average is derived unless by using the past two winters 😉
That said, two wimpy snow years for an overall trend is a statistical blip.
Just using the 1981-2010 as normals. We are just below normal for temps, and right at normal for snowfall so far this winter. Last winter was really warm! 2014-2015 was really snowy! And 2009-2010 was really cold. Unless something drastic happens this will be an “average” winter. Strange considering all the ups and downs that you pointed out!
You might be average this Winter. But in the Huntington/Ashland area snowfall is way behind again this year. So far only about 7 inches. I think normal is about 25 inches. I originally thought February chances would increase with cold predicted to come back. But it now appears the cold is going to come in brief shots with the usual rain then flurries. That being said we are slightly ahead of lasts years meager 5 inch total.
Agreed i am sitting at 4 inches for the year and that’s being generous but we are light years ahead of last year
After last night…about 4 here for the entire season now! Woo hoo….okay, sad I know:(
Snow Happy (NAM) wants no part of that Thursday-Friday system, we seem to have a much better chance with the Sunday-Monday system
A little bit of snow on the highest summits of Hawaii…expecting clear skies and high winds, temps in the 20’s at night and mid 30’s in the day
