Good Friday to one and all. Today is a big day for our old furry forecasting friend as he comes out of his little hole in the ground to tell us what the next 6 weeks of weather have to offer. Bluegrass Bubba is our virtual groundhog and he’s been with me for more than a decade. Let’s check in with the legendary forecaster…
Bubba did see his shadow, meaning 6 more weeks of winter.
That doesn’t make your friendly weatherdude very happy, so I’m going to have a little talk with our boy. 😉
Frigid temps are following last night’s wet snowfall across the bluegrass state, and now we focus on the weekend system. It still looks like two systems battling it out to see which is the top dog, but that fight may mean both stay wimpy.
Let’s start with today and roll forward. Temps will be in the teens this morning with a wind chill in the single digits. Watch for slick spots on area roads. Sunny skies will be noted today, but temps won’t respond very much. Highs will only reach the mid and upper 20s for many areas.
Our weekend system finds the northern branch of the jet stream out of synch with the southern branch. That leads to one weak system moving into the Ohio Valley from the west, leaving another system working across the Tennessee Valley.
That means we get a band of snow and rain working in here Saturday night, with the potential for rain to take over for a few hours on Sunday, then back to some snow Sunday night. Here’s the GFS…
Some accumulations are a good bet on both ends of that system, with the best chance being Saturday night and then again Sunday night. The European Model is showing the potential for some healthy front end snows Saturday night and Sunday morning…
After a break on Monday, let’s do it all over again Tuesday into early Wednesday…

Go big or go home, winter. #teamspring
I will have updates for you later today, so check back. Have a good one and take care.
Just a dusting of snow last night at my house and I’m glad. S. Ohio.
Looking at Chris comment it will probably be go home for winter, Because I don’t see the big one coming any time soon.
I took the big one about 20 minutes ago after eating coffee and eggs. Be thankful that Chris does not report on these types of events.
As for me I have had several big snowfalls this winter here in Northwestern Pennsylvania with a few more to come, would love to ship the cold and snow back to Kentucky.
Formerly from Ky : The more you talk about the snow makes me want more. But that is not going to happen here in Kentucky. I would love to see snow on the ground all winter and a White Christmas and New Years Day to boot every year, but that to is not going to happen. In fact, compared to your winter, we don’t have any winter here in Kentucky, just a long crappy Fall, followed by a lousy Spring and Summer. Enjoy the snow.
You’re crazy . It’s been a very long and VERY COLD winter. Kentucky doesn’t have a fall or spring it’s a long winter and then summer. It’s been the coldest winter since 1987. I agree that if it’s going to be cold it could at least snow some more, but coming from someone who works in utilities outside we have definitely had a winter.
One thing about living in Northwestern Pennsylvania we’re guaranteed snow and usually alot of it, something I did not see alot of while living in Kentucky.
I’m from Johnson County as are my wife’s family who all live in Johnson or Lawrence Counties.
Our true winters, in KY, do not start until January 1st. We are more likely to be grilling steaks on Christmas than sliding down snow covered hills.
Holding my 2 fingers over my nose.
Does something stink or is your septic system broken? From the way that you have worded your post within this specific context, it seems like you are apparently experiencing a revolting smell because of a lack of snow? I mean, I do not have synesthesia, but I am very interested in knowing more about your condition.
Wake me up when something good happens…zzz
Or you could choose not complain and only post when something does happen.
Thelma Lou says the high end of the forecast held true in Wayne County…..we got 3! Three flakes, I mean when you see 1-3 on the snow map, that is the number of flakes we’re getting right? All joking aside when is the very cold temps expected to settle in, past today our lowest high is forecast at 39.
Couldn’t even meet the low end here but never expected to.
LOL, I really like all your comments ! And Barney Fife is my favorite icon and actor ! Keep your comments coming, it cheers me up.
Thanks Chris, Enjoyed the snowfall yesterday. We ended up with an accumulation of 0.2 inches, which brings our total snowfall for this winter ( my back yard ) at 12.02 inches. This is below normal for my part of Taylor County. Does not look like we will be adding to that any time soon. Have a great day.
Uh no, your average snow is 10″ or less for an entire season in Taylor County. We still have more than a month of Winter left. 12.02″ of snow is several inches ahead of normal pace if that really is how much you’ve had.
In the hills in Taylor County the average snowfall is fifteen inches. South Taylor County it is thirteen inches. But what does that mean really ? A lot of years past without any snow. That’s why I say we don’t really have much of a winter mostly a lousy Fall.
No respectable groundhog would be out at 1am to see his shadow! I think he had too much Bourbon and needs to try again when he’s sober!
Barely a dusting in my part of Knott County
Chalk dusting in Fayette County.
Another big zero for the tri-state area. I’m over it. Watching these models do the old bait and switch is the definition of crazy. When you keep doing something the same way (wrong) everytime but expect a different result. As always…..wait till next year.
It is less about the models doing a “bait and switch” and more about the models becoming more accurate the closer that we get to beginning of the weather systems. To call it a “bait and switch” is implying that these weather models are snake oil salesmen and salesmen women that are intentionally trying to build up snow hopes for the snow lovers. Rather than get excited two weeks out before a weather system, only begin considering what will happen around 24-48 hours before the system begins.
It is what it is folks, some people acts like it never snows here in KY. WRONG!!. We have our share of it.
I love how one system underperforms compared to predictions from weeks before and then KY citizens acting like it never snows in Kentucky. We have had a “big one” the last several years. I remember the 2000’s when it actually did never snow. SAD!
Admiral, You must have live in cave in the 2000’s years. We had decent snow that time frame and I mean big ones too
I was there. We got peppered snow, but we never got the “SNOWMAGEDDONs” that we have had as of late.
“It is what it is folks, some people acts like it never snows here in KY. WRONG!!. We have our share of it.”
WRONG!! Depends on where you live in KY. Two years out of the last 20, I could say we actually got “our share” here. Last year the total in my yard was zero for the season. This year to date total is almost 1″. Speak for yourself please. 😉
Considering that it takes roughly five hours to drive from the Eastern border to the Western border of the state, it is a bit crazy to think that snow cannot be localized here. The phrase “it never snows in KY” is a very incorrect statement. So, it is correct to say that it does snow in KY. The INSTANT that a single flake falls from the sky in the state, then it is correct to say that it has snowed in Kentucky. I am not splitting hairs or being asinine. It is completely WRONG and SAD to believe that it never snows in Kentucky. It is a false statement to the highest degree.
So is saying that it takes roughly five hours to drive from one end of the state to the other…..
5 h 37 min (376.8 mi) via I-64 W and Western Kentucky Pkwy. Google search it. Come on, now.
Not my problem you live in an area that doesn’t;t snow.
The gentleman or gentleman woman believes that all weather should be how he/she imagines it should be. The individual apparently speaks for all Kentucky citizens.
Not my problem that you generalize and say “we” have our share…when clearly “we” don’t…
Not hardly a dusting in my neck of knott county
Outside of being a little cold this winter hasn’t been very eventful so 6 more weeks won’t hurt.
I mean, if you believe in the power of the Ground Hog. I prefer to let the tilt of the Earth’s axis in relation to the sun to guide my thoughts on when winter will be ending.
There is only 1 power i believe in
Yes. And that power caused the Earth to have a tilt, through Physics and the Big Bang, so that we could experience the seasons so that the planet’s temperature and cyclical biological processes could be moderated. Yes. That one power can be believed in, but believing in that one power does not mean that you cannot believe in the verified existence that the Earth has a 23.5 degree tilt that results in the unequal distribution of sunlight from Sol (you probably refer to it as the Sun).
Meh.
Lexington has had how much snow this winter so far….?
4 to 6 inches perhaps?
Little on the low side of normal.
Go home winter.
Small drive by events and more salt. Boo!
Why does everyone act like it never snows here?! I live in the Tri State and while we don’t get huge snowfalls, we get snow! Had 6 inches of it just a couple weeks ago!
More rain than snow. Typical Kentucky winter. Bring Spring.
Phil is right only 39% of the time so we have hope for an early spring.
Typical KY weather? What is “typical” weather? We have temperature swings of 30-40 degrees quite often. We have snow, rain, sunny skies, and cloudy skies. We have some of the most diverse weather on the planet. I am confused by your statement regarding “typical Kentucky weather”. It is not like London, England where it rains most days of the year.
Everyone doesn’t live in your backyard. Where I live we have not had a major snow storm since the 90s. Yes, this has been a typical year for pretty much the last two decades in my part of Kentucky. Typical is a characteristic of something and what you described above is typical of Kentucky winter’s. Cold periods, moderate periods, small snows, and temp swings.
Everyone does not live in my back yard, but most people on this blog live in my state. As a state, considering the weather patterns and climate, everything that I stated above is a fact. Would you like links that back up my informal claims on this non-scientific blog? I am more than happy to abide considering that your definition of a “major snow” is not a universally accepted definition.
I agree…..Bring Spring
Nobody can “bring spring”.
think winter is over with down here in TN. warm up, rain, get cold, warm up, rain, get cold, warm up, rain, get cold, warm up, rain, get cold All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
There was no snow on the ground around 7 this morning in Belfry but we’ve got around a inch or so of snow in the last few hours. 119 between Belfry and Pikeville was snow covered this morning.
Just a coating on the ground in east-Lexington. Suits me fine. Few things I dislike more than having to shovel the driveway and sidewalks before leaving for work.
This blog’s naughty-word filter needs to be tweaked. It blocked the above post until I substituted the word “ground” for the word that we use to refer to the green stuff that we grow for lawns presumably because of a 3-letter sub-word contained within that word.
In a nut shell Kentucky has a lousy climate.
Lousy climate? We have one of the most diverse climates on the planet. We reach sub-zero temperatures in the winter, 100+ degree temperatures in the summer, rainy days, sunny days, cloudy days, tornadoes, blizzards, snow falls, sleet, ice, hurricane remnants, floods, earthquakes (not really climate related), humid days, dry days, long hours of daylight, short hours of daylight, two time zones, mud slides, and even lake-effect snow. Schroeder, have you been drinking this early in the morning? Lousy climate? Come on, now.
No I’m just depress today. I have days where I’m very satisfied and day’s like this. I think when I read the post where Erie, Pa. get’s snow every winter set me off. Sorry for this, I’m off for today on the comments. Take care and have a great day.
So why not move to Western Pennsylvania then? In the mean time get some vitamin D.
I love the Kentucky climate. I love all four seasons. I like hot and dry, I like the hot am humid, I like spring, fall and the coldest of hte winters. (It would be better if we had more snow… but you get what you get…) The only weather I am not keen on is cold rain.
I wish for one day all the negative comments could be blocked! Regardless of what it did or didn’t do the hype is exciting. The not knowing. I love winter and snow. Maybe it’s the kid inside this 30 something lol but I love the excitement of it.
What exactly do these people want? The negative comments are absurd since no one has control over the weather. Why even complain? They say that they dread a lot of snow, but then they get upset when the snow does not occur. I have absolutely no idea what these people want on this blog. “Be safe, guys! Drive carefully! I hope that we do not get a lot of snow! However, BRING ON THE SNOW!!!!! SNOWMAGEDDON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to be mad unless the state shuts down for two weeks! I get a gummit check, so I can afford not to work for weeks!”
Coming from the guy that has a negative comeback for every post on here.
I agree Bobt.
I hate that I am now here to spoil your weather whining parties.
Amen! The kid in this 40 something loves all of the seasons we have here. Especially love winter/snow and all the outdoor activities. I don’t mind he shoveling here. Grew up in Nebraska, and we really don’t have to shovel that much.
I am a snow lover and read this blog to see model potential for snow, and then how it actually pans out. The negativity this winter has been horrible on here. Think before posting, and if it is just a negative, whiny, murmuring, complaining, grumbling post about how a model showed snow and then it rained, or the low expectation for nothing, then just do not post. Everyone has negative thoughts from time to time, but not everyone blurts it out. Still hoping for a big snow.
I guess I have reached the pinnacle of my personal life. I, indeed, really must admit. I LOVE LUCY!
I’m guilty. Most of my posts here the last 2 winter seasons have had a negative tilt. Ideally, folks would discuss the dynamics of the weather, its whys, and hows, etc. There are maybe 3 regulars who do that so what are we left with? Those who boast of what they have in their back yard and those who by all accounts from the models and mets should have the same but do not so naturally some snow lovers will be frustrated and vent. It’s human nature.
You remind me of a middle school student who use to get stuffed in the locker. I can see Chris booting you out of here soon… or at least I hope he does…
As opposed to everyone who whines and complains to Chris whenever the weather produces its unexpected behavior?
