Good afternoon, everyone. It’s a spring-like afternoon across Kentucky, with temperatures hitting 70 degrees or a little better. With the spring temps, comes the potential for thunderstorms, and a few could be strong. This kicks off a very wet next few days that can bring a renewed high water threat.
Scattered showers and storms will be noted in many areas this afternoon and evening, but we are watching for a line of storms to develop to our north. That line drops in, bringing the potential for high winds and some hail. The SPC has the low-end severe storms outlook…
Heavy rains will that line of storms may cause some high water issues before the line transitions into a shield of moderate to heavy rain as it keeps moving through.
The front bringing the rains will slow down, allowing another low to develop along it. That moves in on Saturday, with a renewed round of heavy rain. This may target some of the same areas of the south and east, hard hit by recent flooding.
The Canadian has some 2″+ amounts in the southeast through Saturday…
The NAM is also showing some 2″+ rains, but centered more along Interstate 64…
Given the wet ground and swollen waterways, I would think this requires a flood watch for much of central and eastern Kentucky.
Rounds of showers and storms then target the region for much of next week, but we need to focus on the systems rolling in for the next few days. Let’s do just that with your tracking tools…
I will update the threats on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm, with another KWC update later this evening.
Make it a good one and take care.
Barbourville recorded 3.16″ rainfall on February 11. The last time daily rainfall exceeded 3″ was September 6, 2011.
In contrast, Louisville has recorded 5 days since September 2011 when daily rainfall exceeded 3″.
Jackson has recorded 2 instances, both in 2015.
Williamsburg’s last date of daily rainfall exceeding 3″ was in September 2012. That streak still remains.
However, it wasn’t so much the amount that fell in one day, since this was a prolonged event where many areas received totals between 3-6″ over a period of several consecutive days, weakening the soil and creating runoff conditions along with swollen rivers.
Just hit 75 breezy degrees in my back yard.
Today marks the day that my part of KY (Knox) crosses the 50 degree mark for average daytime highs. For me that is just another step in the transition phase into spring. I know we can have some March and April snows, but daytime highs in the 50s start to get comfortable. Makes me want to spend some more time outside.
almost 80 in February btw
Beautiful day! Topped out at 77 degrees and sunny. Definitely craving Spring at this point.
Even the spring-like storms are more north. Can’t say that’s a bad thing though.
72 in Lexington today. NWS has 75 forecast for Tuesday. Wow!

Im thinking the 8.4″ of snow in Eastwood is about it for the winter. Maybe next winter we can all break out of the below average slump in a big way. See you guys in Decemeber!
