Good Saturday evening, gang. Our round of heavy snow and heavy rain is wrapping up from west to east, but the active setup remains. Spring temps are ready to surge in, bringing the potential for rounds of showers and thunderstorms that can cause additional flooding woes.
Let me start with a direct and to the point rant. The National Weather Service offices around here need to really work on this whole Winter Weather Advisory thing. It’s been really bad this winter and today was just flat out terrible. Forecasters have got to be able to adjust accordingly as an event is unfolding.
I know that statement means the same band of tired trolls will gather on twitter and throw darts at me, but I simply don’t care. 🙂
The other aspect of today’s system is the flooding. Areas of southeastern Kentucky have picked up 1″-2″ of rain today, with high water a possibility through the evening…
Things improve quickly for Sunday, but that’s not going to last very long. Showers and storms move back in Sunday night into early Monday, as southwesterly winds howl. This will bring 70 degree temps to town on Monday, with a chance to flirt with 80 on Tuesday..
Rounds of rain and thunderstorms will target the state next week into the following weekend. Some strong to severe storms are possible, but the heavy rain and flood threat continues to take center stage.
This is a very bad look from the European Model…
That’s a ton of water targeting our region over the next week and change. All modes of flooding are possible during this time. This is one of the highest river flood threats we have had in a long while.
I will have a full update later tonight. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. Hope that doesn’t happen, but with the way it’s been…. it probably will. Hope the rain lightens up
On Monday as I have to travel and I hate doing it in rain. But if I have to, I will.
I fell short on reaching the 10 inch mark this evening: Month-to-date is 9.98 inches! Today’s event was 1.48. If the Euro pans out, I should reach near 15 inches for this short 28 day month, simply crazy and should definitely be record setting here in SE KY.
Could we see all time Feb. high temp record fall on Tuesday? It’s possible.
Thanks for the rant Chris! I was ranting myself when we had close to an inch and we still had no weather advisory. I was driving and the roads were terrible!! We now have 3 inches. The weather radio was still saying little or no accumulation at noon. Are they sleeping? Sometimes I feel like they have either forgotten us in Jackson County, Ohio. It is very frustrating. At least we have you to give us a heads up, so Thanks!!!
NWS now forecasting 80 in Lexington for Tuesday–saying some models are showing as high as 83. 80 is the all time record high for February in Lexington–set in 1996…guess what–a high of 17 was recorded in March of that year along with a bunch of snow.
Wouldn’t that be fitting for this oddball winter?
#TeamSpring……Yes Yes Yes Yes!!
Thanks Chris I will definitely keep in eye on the river I can look out and see the big Sandy hope it doesn’t get as high as it has been getting.
