Good Saturday, everyone. Our weather setup today into early Sunday has the potential to become a major flood event for parts of Kentucky. The flooding rains will also be accompanied by an increasing risk for strong and severe storms this afternoon and evening.
Rounds of showers and storms are rumbling across the state through the day, with the potential for flooding issues to develop.
The main action arrives late today in the west, with bands of strong to severe thunderstorms developing. These storms will roll eastward across the rest of the state later this evening into early Sunday morning. Damaging winds are the main severe weather threat, but a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out, especially in the west.
Here’s the updated risk area from the Storm Prediction Center…
These storms will also bring TORRENTIAL rains with them. This may very well lead to major flooding issues developing, with the greatest threat coming across western and central parts of the state. These areas have already had several inches of rain in recent days, so it will not take much to cause some big issues.
I will have updates later today, so let’s go ahead an get you the tracking toys…

Make it a great day and take care.
Thanks Chris, looks to be a busy day watching out for the potential for severe weather later this afternoon. The high pressure to our east / southeast has move out of range to protect us from severe storms. It looks to be heading towards Greenland and will likely become a block and that means a return to winter for the eastern part of the country. So it looks like maybe we will be using chain saws tomorrow and later on maybe snow shovels ? Be safe everyone and keep an eye to the sky.
The Southeast Ridge a.k.a. the Bermuda High, Azores High, is a semi permanent feature that only moves east or west, cannot move north toward Greenland. The Icelandic Low is a semi permanent feature that controls Greenland.
Interestingly, it is the Azores High and the Icelandic Low that gives us the NAO, or North Atlantic Oscillation teleconnection.
Thanks Mike, I didn’t know that, but now I know, and that’s why I like this forum. A good learning medium. Take care and have a nice and safe day.
Good grief Schroeder quit making false statements on something you know nothing about.
Thanks for the updates CB! Not looking forward to what torrential rains and high winds may bring later today and tonight in Louisville and surrounding areas.
All this rain! Imagine if the QPF were higher! Wow – we would have had a ton of water! (Just kidding…)
Major flood stage from the Rolling Fork River on Boston. Houses will be flooded unfortunately.
Weather Channel puts up a Torcon 5 .
