Good Monday, everyone. February is quickly running out of days, but not before the month throws one more big rain maker at us. A storm system rolling our way by Wednesday and Thursday will bring a renewed heavy rain and high water threat to parts of Kentucky.
Many areas are still dealing with flooding issues, especially near rivers such as the Ohio…
Today is a dry one with temps mainly in the 50s with a mix of sun and clouds. Tuesday looks even better with highs hitting the low 60s for most of Kentucky. Clouds will quickly thicken up by the end of the day, as a strong southwesterly wind kicks in.
That’s ahead of another potent storm system moving in here for the final day of February on Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will increase with this and take us into Thursday. The NAM only goes through Thursday morning, but is showing a potent low wrapping up…
The GFS is similar in wrapping up this system as it moves eastward across the Ohio Valley, turning into a big east coast storm…
Notice the shot of cold wrapping in behind that, giving us the chance for a few flakes. The Canadian has a better flake chance…
This big news with this system is the renewed potential for flooding and flash flooding. Many areas can pick up a general 1″-2″ rainfall Wednesday and Thursday. Winds will also become a BIG player with this storm as it rolls across the Ohio Valley as March roars in.
After a big mild up over the weekend, another cold front works in here early next week and is bringing some true wintertime cold with it…
Don’t be surprised to see this pattern throw some snows our way before all is said and done. The active storm track is a little concerning.
Me and the rest of #teamspring are not liking the way March is trending. 🙁
I will have another update later today, so check back. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. Not dry in Somerset this morning. We are in some moderate rain headed to Lexington. Hope we run out of it soon. And very kind of liked the fact my heat hasn’t kicked on much in the past few days too! I’m on board with #teamspring! Have a great Monday everyone!
Thanks Chris, I will take a colder March with a couple of snow events in place of destructive spring storms and flooding. We will see in the coming days if that will actually happen.
This will more than likely end up the wettest and second warmest February on record in Lexington. You have to go all the way back to last year to find the warmest February on record!
Also, and I think you mentioned this before, this unusual warmth in February looks to offset the below normal readings of December and January and skew the entire meteorological winter to an above normal one for Lexington, Louisville, Jackson, and perhaps London and Paducah.
Don’t forget how much the extreme rainfall for Feb changed the winter average for precip. Jan/Dec were below average in precipitation for most of the state with Feb messing that up too!
Thanks CB! Seems we are going to have jungle conditions here in a few months. Lots of water for the plants to draw from. Hopefully only mix events that do not compel more salt to be put on roads. All that just got washed all that away.
That last sentence made no sense. Then again, neither have any of the models for snow this winter 😉
There will be snow in March—measurable even, but I really, really hope this next snap is the last one until next winter. The teens and even twenties for highs are old hat already, and I’m hoping the worst we get is upper 30’s for highs. We might still squeeze out a few 15-20 degree mornings yet, though.
My semi-educated best estimate for March snowfall based on climatological data and this year’s winter so far is anywhere from 1-8″ of snow. 😛 That doesn’t make sense either. lol
