Good evening, everyone. A significant winter storm is working eastward across Kentucky, bringing a band of very heavy snow with it. This will put down a thumping snow in many areas, with the potential for 6″+ showing up in a narrow corridor.
Here are my updated thoughts…
The short-range models are VERY emphatic on this event and suggest higher totals…
HRRR
RAP
Those match up well with what the NAM continues to show…
Hi-res NAM is similar…
GFS is now the lowest of the bunch…
I will be on WKYT-TV later this evening, so tune in. I will try to update the blog as I can.

I noticed a small trend in the width of the snow band on the latest model runs…..a tiny hope for far SE KY???
Comically so. It will soon be a one mile wide line across the state š Seems the trend is less and not more. Take the map and lop 50% is the likely result. Ground seems too warm, so a lot of the snow will be cannon fodder.
Lop Off not on.
Nope
CB is wisely hedging his bets. Warm air factor and timing of precipitation are big factors. I kind of expected the band to stay the previous width, since was a wide range of totals already. Seems the more north it goes, the more snow possible.
Cynics gonna be cynical.
Shake it off, Shake off!
You trying to channel your inner Taylor Swift?
Yes
Warm air overriding cold air is what will cause some area’s to overachieve..Hard to pin point..Basically a now cast for the higher bands..
Just curious warm air overriding cold how does that cause some areas to overachiever I thought the warm hurt it it always does when in eastern KY?
Warm air higher up with surface temps colder creates instability..can get rates 2-3 inches per hour or higher..hard to pin point where but if you’re one of the lucky one’s you will get a big fat heavy wet snow with power issues..lol
Tyvm no I am not lucky currently just cold rain lol
I just want the most snow in Jefferson county here in Valley Station. Has not happened in many years. But this will be an entertaining weather event nonetheless.
I would love to report snowfall every hour, but climate people say I should not do that, since it will inflate actual totals. So, for NWS every hour, for climate people every 6 hours
Snow settles as it gets deeper. It would be better to sweep it clear every hour and measure it every hour and keep track of the amount over the period of the storm. If the snow is blowing around for get it. It will not give you the true amount that fell if you wait to measure it after the storm is over. It would have settled quite a bit especially if the snow is deep.
The band got cut in half rather than increased, so not a goo update for snow fans. Slush fans?
Fake news
Well, how is the heavy band getting cut in half a good update for snow fans? If stayed same or increased- then a good update. You silly, Hammy š
Silly? You took long enough to figure that out. š
My son is in Bowling Green now and says nothing is falling, so if working its way from west, must be a looong time before starting.
Oh, BG is at the bottom fringe, so getting nothing anyway- based on the map.
Anyone have a link to road temps or soil temps?
Snowing big flakes in Eastwood now close to Jeff/Shelby co line. Going to be an interesting night.
Agreed. Iām in the Eastwood area. Things look interesting for this area.
Heavy snow here in Nelson County. I think the models will be spot on with placement and amounts.
Seems it is favoring more the north part of the band CB put on the news tonight, but south of KY river- not so much.
Don’t speak too soon.
Looks like CB expanded the band to where it was.
Thoughts on the Ashland area? Any chance we see a couple inches by morning?
Why is Wayne, Huntington areas showing up as getting snow and yet our local news channels haven’t said anything at all about it?
Radar shows rain in Maysville but nothing falling here yet.
Temp has dropped to 33 in Valley Station. Roads are still wet, some slush in spots on sidewalk. Moderate snow now covering the ground, grill top, snowboard, car tops. Will take measurement at 11pm.
Pouring snow in East Louisville , near Shelby County line.
Rain rain rain rain and more rain showing up in the long term..sure hope it’s wrong..Wonder where formerly from ky got off too and his air force buddy..Was suppose to have a Bermuda high all the way into April with warmer temps..Wrong..
Cold rain so far in Richmond.
Not now it isn’t.
Hah! Opposite roles from Friday night.
Muahahahaha!
Riding the Euro this round..Believe Eastern Ky will get more of the wet sloppy stuff..If we can turn colder early look out..
Beginning to wonder if the snow will mainly be above KY river.
Snow mixing now in Richmond. I guess the more north within the band, the more snow perhaps?
Perhaps
Radar lit up, yet nothing falling in Lex, another bust? IDK maybe not but we shall see
Wrong
Heavy snow in downtown Lex!
Snow at 1.3″ with light to mod snow still falling, though the intensity is slacking now here in Valley Station. Not a smooth snow at all on the surface, lots of clumpy type snow with amounts ranging from 1 to 1.5″.
Just made it home to Bowling Green from St. Louis. Holy Cow, the roads were awful between Evansville,Owensboro, and pretty much until you got to Beaver Dam area. Be interested to see what the totals end up in those areas.
Snowing now in my part of Richmond – heavy and wet. Let’s see how long it lasts…
Very heavy rain in Harlan….regardless if the cold can catch up down here or not before the precip moves out, I am safe to to think a good 1 to 2 inches of rain is a good bet tonight….good that we are not as saturated as a few weeks ago!
Enjoy your snow! I will gladly only take the festive flakes here in Bowling Green.
Storm taking that Northward Jog the models advertised. Accumulating nicely in Richmond,
2 inches so far in Nelson County. It’s starting to stick to the roads
What’s the best radar to use to track the snow path?
Man I wish I still lived in Lexington… Louisville has been nothing but a bust since I moved here. Ugh.
The March 12 record for snowfall in Lexington is 1.0 inches set in 2005. Pretty sure we’ve already exceeded that mark just an hour and a half into the day.
At least 8 maybe 10 inches south side of Fayette County and still snowing. Wow! Snow on everything! The most beautiful snow in a long time. I’m satisfied now – bring spring next weekend! LOL
