Good Tuesday and happy spring. A brand new season arrives just after the noon hour, but it’s Old Man Winter stealing the show. We continue with a Winter Storm THREAT for later today into Wednesday, for the potential of a few to several inches of snow.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Scattered showers will be noted across much of the region early today, with the action increasing this afternoon from west to east
- Snow takes over in the west, with the switch rolling eastward during the evening.
- Wraparound light to moderate snows carry us through Tuesday night and Wednesday.
- Winds will also be very gusty tonight and Wednesday, with 25-30mph gusts possible. You can see all this taking place as our storm wraps up…
- The snow numbers will be impacted by the warm ground, so we will endure some melting, especially early on. Much of what sticks is on grass and elevated surfaces and will be very slushy.
- We are going to see some pockets of overachieving snow and some pockets of underachieving snows.
- The best chance for more than an inch or two is snow is across the north and north-central parts of the state. With that being said, here’s the current forecast…
I will update that map a few more times later today, so be sure to check back.
I like how the Hi Res NAM is handling this, even though the numbers are higher than mine…
The European Model continues to be similar…
A Winter Weather Advisory is out for much of the region, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some areas upgraded at some point.
Here are the early day tracking tools…
Enjoy the flip to spring and take care.
One last gasp from old man winter, trying to snow on our spring parade!
Will any of this stick to the roads? It doesnt seem like the snow will be falling at a rate to overcome the warm roads. Not looking like this will cause much trouble in northeastern ky. Just my opinion of course…
Thanks Chris. Now we just play along and wait to see what happens. Have a great Tuesday everyone.
Thanks for the updates CB! Happy First Day of Spring!
Thanks Chris, We were lucky with the severe weather yesterday afternoon and evening. But those living in the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia were not so lucky. With the impending snowstorm forecast, a lot of moisture is going to be drawn into this low pressure from the Atlantic as it evolves. With that said, I expect snowfall totals to be higher and more widespread than you are showing on the maps in this morning’s blog. It seems like in the hills of Taylor County we get more snow than is forecast. We will see with this storm. Happy Spring everyone ! #teamspring
Not a chance in 1-4 in Eastern ky. It’s way too warm.
Drew, if the snow rates are high enough the snow will overcome a warm ground especially at night. Happens all the time
you are correct. But if the models are showing 2 inches of snow over a 12 hour period those rates will not be high enough to overcome warm ground. As i said, nothing but wet roads in my area of ashland.
I agree the Huntington area, where I am, always ends up on the low end. Like tonight 1-3 inches. I will end up with 1 at most. More likely less than half an inch.
Is there any indication of a sustained Spring pattern showing up anytime in the near future?
Barn, most definitely, but it all depends on when the Bermuda High Pressure moves back west towards the US, and sets up a spring time pattern. My guess spring weather is going to be late this year, due to lack of solar activity.
Due to the lack of solar activity?? Really Schroeder? smh
Should have said no Sun Spots present. Scientist believe we are heading into a solar phase called the Maunder’s minimum, which means the beginnings of the next ICE AGE.
