Good afternoon, everyone. Snow continues across the region, but the action slowly winds down through the rest of the day. This latest winter storm is leaving behind several slushy inches of the white stuff, as our March of discontent rolls on.
The Louisville metro took the brunt of the snow, with some local amounts reaching double digits. I’m glad I added the “locally higher” line to the 4″-8″ forecast for that region. 🙂 Additional light accumulations are possible for the rest of the day across the entire region. Here’s a look at the current advisories…
Let’s start to focus more on a Saturday storm system rolling our way. This is will likely be a big deal and I’m likely to upgrade to a Winter Storm THREAT later today, for parts of the state.
The storm moving in will have a MEGA temperature gradient to work with. Look at the afternoon temps on Saturday…
That’s more than a 40 degree difference from western Kentucky into northern parts of the state. Just… Wow! Heavy rain, heavy snow and thunderstorms develop as a potent low rides that boundary…
The models continue to point toward northern and northeastern Kentucky for the potential of a significant snowstorm Saturday and Saturday night. The GFS isn’t shy with the snow…
That band could set up farther north or farther south, depending on where the temperature gradient settles in. Regardless, somewhere in our region is likely to get smacked. Does that include Kentucky? The odds are pretty high as of now, but that’s not set in stone.
Check out all the precipitation with that same system…
I will update this system on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm. I will also update the blog later this evening. Until then, here are your current tracking tools…

Enjoy your day and take care.
Barely more than a dusting here and that’s ok by me. It’s officially Spring and receiving weather that we should have gotten in the winter months doesn’t sit well with me….Hoping this potential weekend mess stays well north of KY.
Yep….still more this month so far than the entire winter in Harlan….still feel like this is not the last of it either, though I AM 100% FINE IF IT IS UNTIL NEXT SEASON.
Keep up the great work, Mr. Bailey. You’re way underrated, in my humble opinion.
I hope that warm air takes a jog about 150 miles north and east. I want nothing more to do with anymore snow until next winter.
Dilly, dilly on that!
This AND the Bud Light that come with it 🙂
Folks to our north can have the snow 🙂
Sadly, I think a system like that could have more of a chance this time of year to go more south before heading north east. Hoping my hillbilly intuition is way off base.
This is a pretty incredible pattern we’re in.
Especially for folks to our north. Poor critters in nature are probably wondering, what the heck? Many birds probably arguing by committee if they came north too early this year.
Most of ours systems push north… I’m thinking KY misses this one!
Nothing on the ground in my part of knott co. Looks like high elevations got a dusting
About the same in lower elevations in Harlan but looks like wrap around this evening may put down some more, especially if it continues past dark as temps should be going to the 20s…..oh what a month this would have been if we had only had this pattern in January with colder temps!
correct me if I’m wrong but I thought there was a theory that storms tracks follow the previous storms snow pack which in this case would cause the storm to take a more southern route
Suns out so it’s not going to last long enough.
All rain comming for weekend 100 percent confident.
That you can be certain of. If you are in the Huntington/Ashland area.
Coming from the guy that said a few days back that Kentucky would get no snow from this system and here I sit with close to 11 inches of snow.
Hi Chris!
Everyone is starting to talk about this possible storm moving into our area (Northern Kentucky / Kenton & Boone Counties) on Saturday. Do you think we will have a good chance of getting smacked with a bigly amount of snow? Should we all be running out to the store to stock up and beer and Chex Mix??? 🙂 We are really curious about what your gut might be on this!
Models say yes. But I say (fwiw) wait 36 hours.
Also don’t forget those of us in Campbell County!!
