Good afternoon, everyone. Our Winter storm continues to put down significant snows across parts of the state. Our corridor of heavy snow is setting up in the areas we have been highlighting for the past several days.
In the overall scheme of things, the forecast from yesterday is working out very well…
Some areas in the highest range will fall into the “locally higher” range, meaning this is our third 6″+ snowstorm in less than 2 weeks. I will not be surprised to see another double digit snowfall report. That’s historic for anytime of year, let alone the middle of March.
I’m still amazed at the lack of the Winter Storm Warning deeper into southeastern Kentucky, and the “jump” in the advisory in southwestern West Virginia…
Sigh.
We continue to be on guard for the possibility of local high water issues. Some areas may push 2″ of rain today, so watch the creeks and streams. Some thunder is even possible today.
Oh and it’s 70 degrees in far western Kentucky.
As we look down the weather road, temps rebound into the first half of next week, with showers and a few storms possible. I’m not liking the looks of the setup from late week into Easter Weekend. The upper levels are primed to develop another big storm system for our region, that could bring additional winter weather. Watch this trough dig in and take on a negative tilt…
The models are just now beginning to see the storm system developing from that…
Ugh. I will touch more on that late tonight. Until then, keep the snow reports coming and follow along with your tracking toys…

Thanks Chris for the update. Well over two inches of rain here in northern Taylor County. Temperature has been thirty nine degrees all day. A little sleet was mixed in with the rain for a while. Have a great afternoon and evening everyone. #teamspring
I feel so left out of the excitement in Harlan as it has only been boring, plain, cold rain here all day. Although we were not suppose to get the snow, I would love to see the snow, sleet, thunder, hail, rain/mix at tge same time that Central KY is currently seeing….stinks for weather down here. The only thing Harlan rarely is left out of is the flooding
Rain all day here in my part of knott county as well
I had a few flurries earlier today now they are gone.
I know….i have been following this storm all day, and unfortunately, you were at the cut-off with the system too far south of you. It is trying to t-storm in Harlan at 41 degrees! We definitely don’t have the exciting weather down here that areas north and east of me have but still more going on here than even in your area….sorry
I always talk about being so close yet so far away. But I am literally less the 20 miles away. Just east of Huntington. And it doesn’t appear to moving any closer it’s like a stream flowing close by.
Geeze…explosive convective activity breaking out without sunshine and without warmth!
IF there were a few other key ingredients not lacking, thus could be a tremendous severe weather outbreak
We’ve had mostly sleet with some snow rain all day here in east Lex. Ground is white but judging from my deck, it’s mostly accumulated sleet. It’s fascinating to look at the pictures of Clays Ferry bridge which can’t be more than 5 miles south of here as the crow flies and see…no snow or sleet on the ground.
Anyone know how the mountain parkway coming from Lexington? My daughter is driving back from Louisville right now.
No complaints at all from Richmond.
snow, sleet, rain and now thunder Lee co what a day
I think we had everything in Lexington today. Heavy snow, sleet, heavy rain, maybe some hail (?), and thunder. Officially another 0.3 inches of snow at KLEX, so we keep moving up in the March snowfall records.
Northern KY here (Villa Hills)… we might have gotten 3″ at the very best. No accumulation on the roads until late this afternoon around 4:30 when snow started sticking to them, but it caused no issues that I am aware of. It appears that all activity stopped around 6:30 PM and nothing has fallen out o’ the sky since.
It’s suppose to his 46 tomorrow with some Sun, so I would imagine all will be melted by the end of tomorrow if not before. The rest of the week is 50’s and 60’s. Bye Winter… sad to see you go!
Likely not going to be too widespread of an event for flooding but…. I still think they should have issued a flood watch as 2 inch plus totals are coming in with several hours to go yet!
Thankfully only 0.93 has fallen here
You will see some muddy water tomorrow from upstream: I am working towards 1.80 at the moment.
