Good Saturday and Happy Kentucky Derby Day. The eyes of the world on focused on the bluegrass state with today’s 144th running of the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, rain is stealing the show and some of it can be quite heavy at times.

If there is some good news in all this, it’s that the Louisville area will see less rain than much of the rest of Kentucky.

Today’s action comes from a front stalling right on top of the region and a wave of low pressure riding along it. A corridor of heavy rain is likely for much of central and eastern Kentucky, with a general 1″-2″ for many. Locally higher amounts may show up. If that’s the case, a few high water issues may also show up.

Here are some rain forecasts from the models…

Hi Res NAM

GFS

All three models have some 3″+ swaths showing up.

The rain totals in Louisville should be much lower than what areas to the east of them will be seeing. Temps today will likely stay in the 60s for highs because of all the clouds and rain.

I’m also going to be watching southeastern Kentucky for the potential for a strong storm to go up.

The heavy rain will slowly end tonight with a windy and warm Sunday in the making. This will be ahead of another cold front dropping in from the northwest by evening. That should fire up additional showers and strong storms…

Lingering showers will hold into Monday as temps take a nice tumble into the 60s for highs.

The setup for the rest of next week will find warm and humid air returning, with several systems likely to impact our weather through next weekend. This looks like a pattern than can produce several rounds of strong to severe storms around our part of the world.

I will have another update later today. Until then, do some tracking…
