Good Monday, everyone. We are dealing with a much better brand of air across the region today, as cooler and drier air takes over. As we get later in the week, we will have a temp battle brewing and that may bring another prolonged storm threat our way.

Let us begin with today and roll forward. Highs are in the 70s for many, with a mix of sun and clouds. Overall, this is  super-duper pleasant for early June… Or anytime of year. Lows by Tuesday morning will be deep into the 50s for most of the region…

Tuesday is a windy day with temps rebounding into the upper 70s in the east, with mid and upper 80s west. This is ahead of another backdoor cold front dropping in from the north and northeast. That will have a narrow band of showers and storms with it as it reinforces the cooler air for Wednesday, with the heat tickling western Kentucky…

That setup features heat to the west and cool to the northwest is one that puts us in the battle zone. That means our temps may fluctuate from hot to comfy from day to day. It also means to be on guard for thunderstorms diving in from the northwest by late week into the weekend…

I suspect this battle is something we see for the bulk of the summer that’s just starting. The above scenario may be a a setup that can produce something tropical down in the Gulf at some point next week.

It’s been less than 2 months since we had our last snows, but I’m already getting folks asking me about the upcoming fall and winter. The main thing to watch at this point is what happens with the equatorial Pacific. Current indications are that a weak El Nino develops. The placement and strength of that El Nino are crucial to what kind of winter we get around here. Those El Ninos centered farther west tend to favor cold in the eastern part of the country. Those centered near the coast of Peru, tend to be warmer around here.

The JAMSTEC seasonal model now has winter within range. The forecast for the December-February period shows two things winter lovers would like to have happen. One is a developing El Nino centered well west of South America. The other is our old friend the warm pool developing off the west coast and into the Gulf of Alaska…

Those two point toward colder conditions in the east and, sure enough, the forecast temps for December-February show just that…

I’ll throw some more fall and winter stuff out soon, so keep checking back. We are going to get back to having more fun on this blog. I’ve kinda let that slip the past year or so because of my “real job” responsibilities. 🙂

Oh yeah… KWC has a big birthday coming up. We turn 10 years old in a few weeks. Wow… I’m old. 🙂

Have a good one and take care.
