Good Friday, folks. Rounds of showers and thunderstorms continue to put the bluegrass state in the line of fire for some nasty weather. After soaking boomers over the past few days, more of the same will be noted today and into the start of the weekend, with another active system due into the region by Monday.
The rainfall on Thursday was historic. Covington had the 2nd wettest day in record history with more than 5″ falling. Louisville picked up more than 3″, giving the city a top 5 wettest ever August day. Many other areas picked up several inches of rain, so it’s not going to take much rain today to cause high water issues.
Some spots may pick up 2″+ rains today alone, so be on guard for the potential for flash flooding.
Today’s storms may be strong or locally severe. Here’s the Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
As mentioned, the waves of showers and storms keep coming at us through Saturday. The greatest concentration of rain for Saturday may wind up across the east and south, but anyone is fair game for the action. Highs stay below normal.
Sunday will find a scattering of showers and thunderstorms back on top of us with temps back in the low and middle 80s.
A fall cold front dives toward the region into the first half of next week, bringing an increase in showers and storms for Monday and Tuesday…
Strong storms and heavy rains are very possible with that setup. Yes… It’s more of the same in this amazingly un-August-like pattern.
The air crashing in behind the front will look and feel much, much better. A taste of late September may fill the air for a few days…
I leave you with your Friday edition of storm tracking toys…
Have a great day and take care.
I like rain and below normal temps in summer. I hope this patterns becomes sunny and mostly dry for fall. All in on days of low humidity with highs in the 70’s and 80’s.
We had next to nothing in Menifee County yesterday, but it looks like we’re in the line of fire today!
Thanks Chris. Drove to Lexington in a monsoon this morning. Looking like I may get a break driving home. We had had an inch at our house in Somerset when I left this morning. Weekend looks wet. Good day to do inside stuff. Have a great and safe Friday everyone.
As much as parts of Kentucky and Tennessee have had a very wet summer, it’s interesting that one only has to go a short distance to find fairly dry areas. A neighbor on a nearby street is originally from Cape Girardeau MO and visits on a regular basis. Southeast Missouri has been hurting for rain at times this summer even though precip has picked up in the last few weeks. Other parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas are experiencing even worse drought conditions according to the US Drought Monitor.
It is no way dry here; however, we are not seeing near the amount of rain here in Harlan that most of the rest of the state has been seeing since June. The current setup has been too far west this week and I have only recorded about a tenth of an inch for the entire week since last Saturday ☺
Looks like the front may draw closer tonight but the dome holds strong for now.
I definitely recorded more down in my part of the state back in 2004 and 2011 but still an above average summer and year so for here too. I am at 44.98 inches year-to-date!
