Good Saturday, folks. Old Man Winter crashed into the region last night, bringing snow showers and frigid winds. This is the opening act to a potential bigger storm system rolling our way late Monday into Tuesday. That’s a winter storm that can bring accumulating snow to much of the region.
Let’s begin with today’s weather and then roll ahead.
The morning starts with a few flurries and snow showers quickly working away from eastern Kentucky. These flakes are leaving behind a few dusted rooftops and decks…
Temps are frigid with readings in the 20s and wind chills in the teens this morning. Sunshine and 30s take over for the afternoon.
Our developing winter storm takes aim at the region Monday and Tuesday with rain and snow. How much snow falls and where it falls remain to be seen. That depends on the strength and exact track of the low from the Gulf up the east coast.
I put this map together Friday afternoon and I’m sticking with it…
That doesn’t mean you will have snow on the ground where you live, but it’s showing the area I believe to have the greatest risk of getting accumulating snows. Could be a light accumulation or something a little bigger, I’m just not quite sure yet.
All of this looks to start as rain on Monday then switch to snow Monday night and Tuesday. This shows up on every model we see…

That’s also some VERY cold air coming in here behind that system. If we can put snow on the ground… IF… Then we could challenge record lows.
As I look beyond that system… The trough lifts out pretty quickly, but we need to watch for something digging in behind that for next weekend. No model is really showing much, but you know me and the signals I pick up on. š
Updates will be coming throughout the day, so check back. Make it a good one and take care.
I’m not saying Chris is wrong about the weather by any means, I’m just saying that I’m not going to believe it’s going to snow until I actually see it falling from the sky. I was all excited about the snow coming in for Monday and Tuesday, and now it’s not looking very likely to hit Laurel County. I know everyone will say “we still have more snow chances and winter hasn’t even started yet”…yes I understand that, but I’m not getting up my hopes. I’ve seen wimpy Winters and last year being one of them. I’m afraid this year might be another š
It’s okay…your just feeling the SE KY reality stingāŗ!
In all honesty though, this should be a much better winter than last year.
Not to make you feel any worse, we do have a decent high water threat if the more NW path is correct. Models show around 2 inches or more of rain for SE KY…not good considering we have just had between 2 and 4 inches in most areas this week alone!
Statistically, it HAS to be a better winter scenario for us this year than last. Here in Middlesboro, we had a grand total of just over a half inch of snow for the entire winter last year, which is by far the least we have seen here….pretty pitiful indeed.
Itās all about location I know a decent amount of Kentucky last year picked up above normal snowfall.
Had an impressive snow shower that left almost a dusting on the snowboard around 2:00 this morning. It’s texture was like grains, very little moisture and stings when the wind blows it into your face.
I have to nit pick here. Watching local mets this morning use the term “chilly” to describe 22 degree temps is, well, plain stupid. 22 degrees is frigid, not chilly. 55-60 is chilly and 40’s are cold.
Thank you for your understanding.
I think thatās all relative. I would not consider 40ās chilly, let alone 50s and 60s. So there ya go.
Yeah, 22 is average January low in Harlan. Regardless of flurries or real snow next week, this is impressive for mid-November cold!
I totally agree! That’s not nit-picking, that’s ridiculous LOL Anything under 28 degrees qualifies as “COLD”, well past “chilly” LOL!
I live 20 miles north of Columbus ohio the mets here are calling for a mix and all rain southern ohio and ky
Iām excited to talk about possibly…now I will get tired of ājust talking if it doesnāt snow and tee are in late febā…but come on, this is exciting!!
