Good Monday, everybody. Old Man Winter is back in the bluegrass state today as snow showers combine with frigid winds to produce a mid winter’s day. As a matter of fact, the next few days will feel like the heart of wintertime as our wintry November keeps rolling.
Cold air is pouring into the state early today with rain changing to snow showers from west to east. Gusty winds of 40mph will be possible early, but those numbers come down as the day wears on.
Northwesterly winds will create fairly widespread snow showers this afternoon through tonight across central and eastern Kentucky. With temps in the 20s, slick roads may cause a few travel issues from time to time. We could see a few school delays or cancellations Tuesday morning.
Snow showers and flurries will likely continue across the east through Tuesday.
Light accumulations are a good bet during today into Tuesday. The very nature of snow showers make it difficult to pinpoint who can pick up just a little coating to those who can get an inch or so of snow. Here’s a general light snowfall forecast…
The models show how they are trying to hot spot an inch or two of snow, with lighter amounts in between…
Hi Res NAM
NAM
In addition to the snow showers, the cold temps and gusty winds are a force to be reckoned with. Temps drop into the low 30s today and hold steady, then drop into the low and middle 20s overnight. Highs on Tuesday may not get above 30 in areas of central and eastern Kentucky. Throw the winds into the mix and it gets frigid…
Those are the wind chill numbers through Wednesday morning. Those are some crazy wind chill digits for November.
The cold lifts out later this week into the weekend as a couple of big rain makers roll in from the southwest. Temps bounce back for a few days, but next week will see the return of a very wintry pattern that can grow much colder than what we are seeing now.
I will have updates later today. Until then, I have your snow shower tracking tools…

If most of the precip falls tonight in SE KY, I could see an inch for someone, especially high up. Here’s to the NAM, hoping it is right and boo to the GFS if it is wrong!
Maybe this will be a NAM kind of winter as this model did good back in 2014-2015 with most of the snow accumulation within 48 hours…not to knock the EURO as it did fair but GFS was terrible a few winters ago!
On the NWS page – why, when it’s straight on windy, do they say current conditions are “breezy”……and when it snows moderately, they will report Light Snow…or if it snows heavy, they report heavy snow, but no in between?
Many NWS hourly observations will display Light Snow if it’s light, Heavy Snow if it’s heavy, or just Snow (if it’s moderate).
Breezy is for 15-25 mph winds per NWS glossary
Windy is for 20-30 mph winds, again from glossary
I think those apply to sustained winds though not 100% sure.
We had a good dusting of up slope snow here in Taylor county, but not quite an inch. looks like the trend has ended now from the west. So far this month of November we had over seven inches of precipitation of which was of ice, accumulating snow showers and of course rain. It seems to me that this was an average month of weather. Here’s hoping for a moderately cold December with tons of snow for everyone.
