Good afternoon, everyone. We have snow showers and squalls working across the region causing all kinds of travel issues. This action continues to develop on a strong northwesterly wind that’s keeping temps and wind chill numbers in the frigid range.
A Winter Weather Advisory is out for many areas of central and eastern Kentucky, but this has been piecemealed together by our NWS offices, largely after the fact. I’ve said this for years and years, but our NWS offices have got to totally revamp the winter weather program. It’s simply not working and it’s having a negative impact on the lives of people across our region. (cue the trolls to come after me on twitter on in the comments section)
Here’s the current advisory map…
The snow map I put out on Sunday looks to be in good shape…
Snow showers and flurries will hold tonight into eastern and southeastern Kentucky.
The focus after this then shifts to a very windy and very wet setup from late this week through early next week. Three systems roll through here:
System 1 arrives Thursday with light rain that may begin as some sleet. This brings rain across the region Thursday night and Friday.
System 2 is a very strong storm wrapping up and working across the Ohio Valley Friday night into Saturday. This will bring very heavy rainfall and high winds that can gust to 50mph. A few strong storms will also be possible.
System 3 arrives Monday into Tuesday with more rain and gusty winds. Much colder air crashes in behind it with some snow showers possible.
You can see all three systems showing up on the models…

Heavy rains are likely with these systems…
I will have updates later today on WKYT-TV and here on KWC. Let’s get back to tracking today’s snow showers and slick roads…

I would never “troll” CB..NEVER! If truth be known, I found this blog by accident (I don’t even know HOW?!) shortly after its inception, and found it to be very fascinating and interesting, with a lot of really good, nice people on board.(I wonder where the majority of them are now??! ha-ha!) I live in Bardstown, and at the time, on our cable, we got WKYT, so I was able to watch Chris every day. I now have DISH, but have ROKU, so I’m still able to get the MOST ACCURATE forecasts available, at least IMO! 🙂 Not a single local (L-Ville) met even really mentioned that we’d have snow today (well, perhaps one might have last evening, but didn’t act like it it would be more than three flakes, if that?!) I woke up to snow cover on my back deck & picnic table; it’s been very “snow-globe-ish” all day. <3 I think all us snow lovers are in for a satisfying Winter season!
I hope you are right Debbie, I would love a nice snowy winter! I’ve sat at my desk and watched the “snow-globe-ish” winter all day. I have loved it!
The NWS office in Charleston, just last Sunday predicted 30% chance of rain for yesterday and then sunny from Tuesday thru Saturday with temps climbing to 60’s. It has snowed all day with very little accumulation. Point being, Chris called for the snow for days, NWS waited till it started. NWS now has rain every day after tomorrow. Good thing they don’t get paid by their accuracy.
I wasn’t trolling just noticed no cold talk thats all
Love this site! Great job you do. One problem though within the past week or so it keeps crashing. Any ideas?
Can’t we all just get along? 🙂
Most of Kentucky is almost always rain and then the scrap end of the moisture flow is snow. Cold air is usually late to the game for bigger events. Question seems does this same thing happen always this January and February? We almost never get a good indication until less than a week before the actual event.
CB stated the main action was January and February. Anything in December would be a bonus.
Chris your doing fine, your always ahead of the game before the local mets even mention it. I live far western,ky and I always depend on your forecast on this blog. THE BEST AND MOST ACCURATE IN MY BOOK!! THANK FOR ALL YOU DO.
