Good evening, folks. Rounds of light snow continue to push across the bluegrass state, putting down light accumulations. Many areas are now under a Winter Weather Advisory through early Wednesday as travel conditions go downhill overnight.
Farther down the road, it’s still all eyes on the weekend storm system and the impact it may have on Kentucky.
Let’s get you caught up on the Winter Weather Advisory…
Lots of coatings to 1″ of snow will show up, but some embedded bands of 1″-2″ will be possible. Again, not everyone sees more than a coating of snow from this, but delays and cancellations are likely later tonight and early Wednesday.
The weekend storm system continues to show up on very well on the models, but the track and evolution are still in flux. This is being hampered by the issues with the new version of the GFS. I haven’t had a full run of it since last night, so that’s making it a little tough because the model has actually been doing very well.
The current GFS continues to show a similar track and evolution to what the new GFS has been showing…
Here’s the overall snow map from that particular run…
The average from the GFS Ensembles isn’t too different…
The individual members are still showing a decent spread…
The operational European Model continues to absolutely hammer the southern half of Kentucky into areas of Tennessee and the Carolinas…
The average from the 51 member European Ensembles from WeatherBell is farther north and more expansive…
As you can see, we still have a lot of work to do to see how much of an impact this storm has on the weather across Kentucky. It’s still too early for me to say, with any certainty, how this plays out for the bluegrass state.
I will have a potential map for you later tonight and on WKYT-TV starting at 11. I leave you with your evening light snow tracking toys…

EURO would be a once in a 100 + year event for snow of that magnitude that far south….very unlikely but….even if it was cut to 1/4 of that total with between 4 and 6 inches for SE KY, it would still be a big deal this early in the season as it just doesn’t happen every December, especially early December!!!
I’m in Lancaster (Garrard) county KY and it always seems we are a little too south or a little too north. Maybe we will get something. Hoping so!
Hanks Chris. And now, with the light tease of tonight and tomorrow, we wait. Wonder how things will look in the morning…. Have a great evening everyone.
You too 🙂
Thanks Chris. And now, with the light tease from tonight and tomorrow,…. we wait. Wonder how things will look in the morning. Guess we will see. Have a good evening all.
Still lightly raining in Putnam County WV. I don’t think the snow is gonna work out tonight for me. Looks like our typical 34 degree cold rain is gonna hang tough.
Joe bastardi just said the storm will correct north to ohio by thursdays runs
That would put us in the mainly cold rain with a little mix zone- if it did that. CB’s wording suggests seems he is not too comfortable with a main KY hit yet, but he sees the chance.
While I don’t disagree with the idea this thing will turn North…the fact that Bastardi said it will gives me a bit of confidence that it just might hold it’s current projected path. Bastardi is a known it all who is correct about as often as The Weather Channel or a random phone app…
True stuff.
Here’s the latest GFS newer version..Only out to 126 on the snow map and seems stuck again.

SE KY just can’t shake the consistent hit on the main models, can we? Problem is, being the main target several days away rarely works out. Again, if we only end up with a good fraction of the EURO or even that Newer GFS run, still will be biggest and earliest snow in December in many years. Plus, we would already have more than the entire 2017-2018 season☺
Not only the models but ensembles to..Its getting close to where one can start taking the operational models serious over the ensembles..Tonight’s run of the Euro should be interesting..Hopefully the Euro ensembles keep expanding the snow..
What aslre your thoughts on the overall setup? My opinion, I think we are going to have two chances for accumulation in SE KY. It seems the first part of the energy will be a fairly stout low that may or may not be all heavy wet snow/mix while the northern branch is trying to drop an upper level system which would likely pull some rain back into SE KY after the first low intensifies off of the Carolinas. Then, the second snow would be the rain/mix while on the warm side of the upper low changing back to all snow IF the low drops in from NW…..thoughts????
Just hope the modeled HP is correct on the modeling, maybe a little stronger..Don’t need it to scoot out fast or we lose our cold air..Northern energy helps also..really like the tracks all models are showing so to me the HP and the energy in the northern stream will determine the out come..
When does the weekend storm hit paducah? Lexington?
Ignor phone typos….lol
Hmmmm. CB seems less enthused with the weekend storm than he would or perhaps should normally be. He almost came across as meh about it on 56, with storm threats over several days in his outlook. What happened to our CB? I get that the models can be cruel beasts, but seems that some of CB’s zip has been zapped!
Maybe he’s turning into you.
why are some of ya all wanting snow?i live here in the mountains of southeast kentucky ( harlan county ) and when it comes a big snow its hard for me to get out because of the hilly terrain plus we are having our christmas parade saturday also.i pray that we dont get any snow at all.
I’m with you…I don’t want any snow.
So I guess you two are sNOw people 😉
According to Chris, the gfs and Canadian have moved a little north from previous runs
CB, the Euro just mic drop. lol
Heard it has moved somewhat north…true?
Oh yeah it moved north
