Good Thursday, everyone. Our day is starting our with a period of mix and snow working across the eastern half of the state. This is causing a few slick spots to develop on area roads. In the overall scheme of things, there is a lot of winter action on the weather menu through the weekend and into next week, including the some serious cold and snow potential.
As mentioned, today has a period of wet snow working across the eastern half of the state. Some hit and run coatings are showing up with some streaks that can approach an inch or two where the moisture hangs deeper. With temps in the 20s, slick spots develop on roads, with our without any slushy sticking.
Leftover snow showers and flurries may be going through noon in the east, then a break happens during the afternoon. That’s ahead of an arctic front that slams in here late this evening into the wee hours of Friday morning. Some light snows will be blowing around with this in some areas…
The air behind this is FRIGID. Lows by Friday morning reach the single digits and low teens but gusty winds make it feel much colder. Some areas may see below zero wind chills…
Several different systems then dive in here from the northwest this weekend. Each of them may have some light accumulating snows along their respective tracks. That will be followed up by a major arctic air outbreak moving in later Monday night and Tuesday. This is basically the polar vortex dropping into the country in a fashion similar to late in the 2013/14 winter.
This will have an arctic low ahead of it. You can see that and all the action ahead of it…
Canadian
GFS
Low temps behind that for the middle and end of next week may be historic for parts of the country and take us toward zero or below. The GFS is well below…
The European is also below
I will have updates later today. Until then, let’s track the morning slush potential…
A few flurries but mostly rain a brief cold snap and back to mild temps.A very boring few weeks then spring is here
Bobt on January 24, 2019 at 5:58 am
Below average in mid-February and March might be highs in the upper and mid-40s. We are only about 3 weeks away from average highs hitting 50s in southern Kentucky. We can still get some cold days and snow, but temps will be fighting how long it stays on the ground.
MarkLex on January 24, 2019 at 9:03 am
averages smaverages. Nothing is normal anymore….we could have a brutal week with a foot of snow and frozen misery…..then the next week could be 60s, and it would average out to normal.

Wrong
Jimbo on January 24, 2019 at 6:24 am
Even the Polar Vortex front looked like it had rain on the leading edge. It also appears tonight’s artic front won’t have any staying power in the tri-state area since high temps from Friday thru a Monday are predicted to be 23,33,43 and 53.
Schroeder on January 24, 2019 at 7:20 am
Currently the Arctic vortex is just north of Hudson Bay and is strong and positive.

Rainfall total 1.06 inches. Snowfall just a dusting.

Another system of NOTHING but rain in Wayne County, you could scoop all our snow this winter and put it in a bucket and you would have a bucket. Not biting on the BIG cold next week, everything so far has wimped out from this far out. I think they could make a movie about KY weather it should be titled “A Week Away” the sequel could be called “The Next Two Weeks”. Thelma Lou says I’m too negative but it’s not my fault, it’ the weather. 🙂
BubbaG on January 24, 2019 at 7:23 am
Uh oh, CB used the action word again!

I couldn’t agree with everyone this has been the biggest joke for a winter like he said a week away I’m in the Louisville viewing area they said no major snowstorms next seven days yes it’s going to get cold but so what if is all wasted on no snow oh we’ll guess I’m ready to write winter I’m getting tired of wait till next week or get excited about a possible dusting that don’t even happen you know it’s been a lame winter when the headlines is a possibility of a dusting or dreaded backside flurries
feederband on January 24, 2019 at 8:14 am
That’s Kentucky climate.
Jamie on January 24, 2019 at 8:44 am
Yeah I mean people gripe on here most about Winter when we’re having “normal” (rain, backside flurries, a few very cold sunny days.)
BubbaG on January 24, 2019 at 9:04 am
The models and actual systems have a hard time with snow in Fencetucky. Not seeing anything on the next several weeks.
BubbaG on January 24, 2019 at 9:06 am
That stands out different than this winter so far
BubbaG on January 24, 2019 at 9:09 am
Maybe those arrogant words will spite mother nature and bring big snow 🙂
Cold, warm up to rain, backside flurries, repeat. Over it! Rodger in Dodger
WM on January 24, 2019 at 12:29 pm
Yup, that’s the broken record we keep playing.
Jared from Letcher County on January 24, 2019 at 9:28 am
Actually had a bit of snow here this morning, anywhere from a half inch to an inch.
Formerly from KY on January 24, 2019 at 9:28 am
Nowadays in Kentucky a big snow is an inch of snow or less.
BubbaG on January 24, 2019 at 11:52 am
We had three record snows in less than twelve months, just a few years ago. Of course the gap was over seventeen years before that…..
Troy on January 24, 2019 at 12:05 pm
Bubba, your area had 3 record snows but the majority of the state had only one or none.
Bjenks on January 24, 2019 at 9:37 am
Wow to much negativity for an average winter. Models are for entertainment purposes from three days out. Long term forecast are just that, a forecast. Not this is what is going to happen this winter. I am pleased with my average winter. A little soggy, but who hasn’t had wet feet for the past 10 months. IMO we will be singing a different song here in a month. Wishing this winter be over due to sustained cold and snow. That is a forecast not what is going to happen.
Schroeder on January 24, 2019 at 11:10 am
Northwest flow means no snow unless Lake Michigan can be moved farther southwest. As far as forecasting the weather you CAN’T !!!
Ralph on January 24, 2019 at 1:12 pm
Thanks.
Bryan on January 24, 2019 at 11:27 am
I think Thelma Lou can predict next week’s snow better than any model.
Bobt on January 24, 2019 at 11:34 am
Really only had two decent week out looks all winter and those wh were for only small sections of the state. The one in December that missed the SE and Eastern part of the state. Literally got nothing with that one, and the one last week for the central and northern part of the state. Besides those two misses even the week out models have not shown any part of the state getting smacked with snow. Just a couple of maps showing and inch or two and even those miss for the most part. Can’t wait for March to get here and hopefully go into some weather closer to a drought than a flood..had enough rain in 2018 and January 2019 to last me a while.
The 1978 storm I heard about is a rarity. I experienced the 1994 storm and that was rare as well. Hope we see another like those soon.

Does anyone here know an old folklore tale about winter and robins gathering in big flocks? Seems like I saw someone mention this a few weeks ago? Nonetheless, my backyard, my neighbors on all sides, right now, have what looks like THOUSANDS of robins! On the ground, around feeders, on lines, and I have about 6 big ones on my back porch right now looking inside at us?! This morning when I first got up to let the dogs out, there were about 9 (I counted) big doves around my back deck, and cardinals just all over the place, whipping the crap out of the little sparrows at the feeder. My dogs didn’t even disturb them when they went out-the birds for the most part just STAYED there?! Just wondered if anyone has ever seen this, because I’ve never seen this many birds in my yard.
Schroeder on January 24, 2019 at 12:32 pm
YES, Lots of Wildlife at my place. I just dump some corn on the ground and have flocks of Wild Turkey, all kinds of Deer and more smaller birds than I can count. But I live in the hills of central Kentucky where there are no people and is so quite that you can here a pin drop in my house with the wind blowing outside.
Ralph on January 24, 2019 at 12:47 pm
Thanks.
Schroeder on January 24, 2019 at 12:19 pm
From 1976 to 1979 in my opinion was a mini ICE AGE. Which could repeat but not likely even with zero sunspots as we have at the present. I think everyone should just except that climate change is happening. This winter hasn’t been too hard and your heating bills have been low so there really isn’t anything really to complain about. Spring is just around the corner so maybe we all should focus on that and let this winter go. Quit complaining and just report on rainfall and snowfall or very cold or hot temperatures or whatever we receive in the future.
Ralph on January 24, 2019 at 12:48 pm
