Good afternoon, folks. It’s a blustery and cold day following last night’s snow across central and eastern Kentucky. This cold air grows even colder tonight as an arctic front moves through with more flakes for many of us. These systems keep coming at us through the weekend and into next week, when the Polar Vortex pays a visit to the states.
Snow showers continue to fly across the southeast as a northwest flow continues…
Some additional light accumulations are possible tonight as the arctic front moves in with a round of light snow and snow showers. Winds will be very gusty and that will take Friday morning wind chills to -5 to +5.
Another light snow maker targets the region late Friday evening into early Saturday morning. That may also lay down light accumulations with a few snow showers behind it on Saturday…
At the end of that, you can see the next system quickly diving into the Mississippi Valley. That system shows up across Kentucky on Sunday with the potential for more light snow. You can see that and the systems before it on the NAM…
The Polar Vortex is heading toward the United States and arrives early next week. Watch this monster…
I told you more than a month ago that you would be hearing the term Polar Vortex soon. Well, now you’ve heard it. 🙂
That will be introduced by a system bringing accumulating snow Monday night and Tuesday and may have another sneaky snow maker right after that…
Snow in arctic air is awesome cause you can get ratios of 30 or 40 to 1.
Historic temps are possible across much of the country for the middle and end of next week. Look at the lows coming off the GFS…
For fun, check out the wind chill forecast for the exact same time on Wednesday night…
This might be a good time to do a little extra weatherproofing on your car and home.
I will have the latest on this extreme period of winter weather coming up on WKYT at 4pm and here on KWC this evening. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris! Mercy! I think there is likely a chance we will get some snow out of the arctic air and all this set up. Would hate to think we had moisture and all that cold air and wasted it! Tomorrow morning does t sound very good either. I am in and out all day so it’s nice to have a heads up so I kind of know how to dress. Fun and games ahead. Right now it’s 26 with a wind chill of 16. . Have a good afternoon all.
Clipper mania?
Could be some impressive cold but looks as though it goes away and rain returns in full force by months end….just as expected.
When all is said and done I will report my findings from my back yard. #climatechangeevents
Thanks.
Thanks

In January 2014, ones on this forum were saying the same thing about disappointing snowfall, the upcoming cold blast that will likely not happen, and so forth. Very similar to what we are about to enter over the next several days. Take a look….
Rain to snow equals rain to flurries. Enjoy the day off Mr. Bailey and here is hoping the worst of winter means more snow because so far all we have had south is a few cold days.Andy Rose 01/11/14
We are about at midpoint here in Knox Co. and sitting at about 1.5 inches total for the year. A waste of a lot of cold with little snow to show for it. Nearing the halfway point of January and nothing big on the horizon.BobT 01/11/14
But seeing other people’s snow is like kissing your sister!Todd 01/18/14
Sitting here waiting for the typical smart-alecky “I told you so” comments to commence.Hamlin 01/18/14
I have been waiting for one of your “Eeyore” posts all day. You never disappoint.Beth reply to Hamlin 01/18/14
Thanks for the update Chris. As much as I would love to see a big snow just as all of you, I’m really to the point that the weekly letdowns has brought me to the place that I would rather it just warm up and stay that way the rest of the season.Troy 01/19/14
Yesterday marked the point of winter when average highs start their upward trend. It’s been over a decade without a significant snowfall for most of us, and this years snow total has been very small for most of Kentucky. Maybe the dome breaks down, but we are three weeks into January with very little snow.BobT 01/19/14
….some things never change.
You have a lot of time on your hands, don’t you…
I do today
This is the 20th year of the drought of significant snow here in my backyard. You can quote some central KY naysayers from 2014 and say they were wrong, but 2014 wasn’t significant for snowfall in our part of the state. Only reporting from my backyard and it hasn’t received a true dome busting snow since 2018 while the rest of the state has had several the last few years..
Since 1998
What kind of dome busting snowfall are you talking about? A foot? I mean if we get a 6″ thumper perhaps twice in a season, many on here would be satisfied. If you have not had a 6″ snowfall in the last 20 years, and admittedly don’t know where your backyard is, then you do live in a dome or cave
Thanks for letting us know Mike S its appreciated
Yep – that entire winter was a no show until the middle of Feb. Then 2 major storms in 3 weeks. And it was COLD too. I don’t care what the sun angle or averages are….I was sick of snow and cold after a week……..and so were a lot of others.
Yep. You guys got a lot of snow that year. Andy and I got the usual low end of it .
There was some cold but very little snow in my yard in 2014 (as is normal). Here’s another post you can look up in 5 years….I’m sick of rain! Also, I’ll eat my words if I’m wrong but I have zero faith in any snowfall over a dusting this season in my yard….
l absolutely LOVE this comment. And it goes to show that the comments on this blog are ALWAYS so negative. Some people need to move out of Kentucky.
Euro, CMC and UKmet look great today, I hope they look the same next week.
GFS still out there crushing dreams…
Mike s, I don’t know were you leave but we had decent snow here in my part of world in ky the last decade.
People on here can only report their own backyard. While some may of had a significant snow fall the last few years others have not. Case in point was 2014 that was considered extreme for some. Looking at Mesonet for Fayette County they had an early February day with 1.5 inches pct. and a temperature of 32 for the high and 20s for the low. Knox Co. my backyard, had .75 inches that day with a high of 39 and low of 33?. Which area got slammed and which one got a lot of rain or mix?
Average high temp in February 2014 for Fayette was 39. Average high for Knox was 49. We had one significant day of precipitation down here (2 inches) that year and the high temp was near 70 and the low ended up at 30. Do you think the cold could catch the moisture? No. So, when some talk about lack of snow they probably are reporting from their backyard.
Don’t know how close to Barbourville you live, they had a report of 5.7″ over a 3-day period in December 2010. But, I can’t find a whole lot of information…even the 1997/98 year was omitted
We have had a couple of 4-6 inch snows in the last 20 years but have lacked anything significant like the other parts of the states have gotten. Some other parts along the border might also be in a drought. Would be hard to repeat what happened in the 90s but you would think that you could get a storm to get half of those totals.
Well, since 2014/15. Before that, in 2013/14.
So the winter Snowdog is still mainly cold bark with little snow bite…. Still better than ice rain 🙂
I’ll be in downtown Chicago on Monday through Wednesday of next week. Brrrrr.
CB’s weather and weather apps like accuweather are like night and day different. I trust chris as always.

Well, hopefully, any who have been waiting for a decent snow, the time period for the next month looks like our best shot. The warm wedge phenomenon is intriguing, but there are ways to offset it. Position of low at 850mb can bring a north wind component thereby negating any east flow that rushes down the western side and result in compressional warming. Just need the cold and right track
The flakes that are setting up in Indy right now and working toward eastern ky. Will those flakes have enough to put down a fresh dusting? Thoughts?
Should:) Also, it will be dry flakes which add up faster! I received about 1/4 inch in Harlan this morning but slightly higher up had between 1/2 inch and 1 inch. Better than 0.
I agree terry. I’m hoping us around the Ashland area can get another dusting tonight!
