Good evening, folks. It’s another bitterly cold night taking for the bluegrass state with temps and wind chills below zero for many areas. There’s also another band of arctic snows working across the west and south, and that may cause slick travel conditions.
Here’s the area I’m targeting for tonight’s light snow…
It won’t take much to cover roads and cause slick travel. As I said before last night’s snowfall… A Winter Weather Advisory would be more than justified.
While Thursday isn’t as cold as today, a messy system moves in Thursday night into Friday. This is likely to mean a third straight day of school closings in many areas. As I mentioned earlier, the models are going to struggle with low-level arctic cold. That leads to colder air hanging tougher, leading to a better snow and freezing rain risk.
The models are slowly picking up on more and more of an initial snow threat…
GFS
New GFS
Slick travel conditions are increasingly likely, especially early on Friday.
From there, milder air surges in here for the weekend and early next week. Temps will make a run at 60 during this time, but a few showers and thunderstorms will be noted.
This setup isn’t going to last very long. Arctic air takes control of the pattern again for the second half of next week. Can we get storm system to develop along this next surge of arctic air? Maybe. The new GFS says so…
The numbers behind that front take us back to being much, much colder than normal…
I leave you with your evening weather trackers…

Thanks CB!
Hot cocoa time!
Hot toddy maybe?
Even better 🙂
Thanks Chris! Yep! Hot cocoa sounds really good! And a warm fleece blanket to wrap up in. The thing I dread most about this cold is the electric bill. 😉 Have a good evening everyone and stay warm.
Why can’t we get anything in Floyd county. It either goes above us or under us or changed to rain or speeds up. We haven’t had the ground covered this winter
Does anybody have any faith that a backside low will produce some snowfall next week.
One thing for sure if the low does produce some frozen moisture it will be battling a 60 to 70 degrees ground temperature.
At this point I would trust a clipper system producing more snow than the storm system coming towards the state next Wednesday.
Seems CB would be mentioning it at this point, if he thought there was a decent shot.
