Good Thursday, everyone. We have another bitterly cold start to the day, but milder days are on the way. As we get set for that transition, we have a bit of a mess rolling in here later tonight into Friday. It’s a fairly week system that can bring a little snow and light freezing rain to town.
Let’s begin with today and move forward. Temps this morning will be from -10 to +5 across the state. Wind chills will be mainly below zero.
Southern Kentucky may have a few snow covered roads as a band of arctic light snow rolls through this very early on.
The system moving in tonight and early Friday looks to bring a messy mix of light snow and a touch of freezing rain. Given the cold pavement and frozen ground, this will likely cause travel issues again…
Light accumulations show up on the models, with local 1″ or so snow amounts possible…

New GFS
There’s a real chance for a third day in a row of cancellations and delays. I’ll get a call map on that later today.
Temps behind this system take off and should reach 60 by Sunday or early next week. This strong southwesterly flow should also bring an increase in rain and even a few thunderstorms. Don’t get too used to the mild because arctic air crashes back in for the second half of next week. Waves of winter weather may form along this arctic boundary.

New GFS…
I will update things later today, so check back. Stay warm and take care.
I will take that warmer air next week. Usually with a warm up comes more rain though. Going to get really muddy again to.
Starting out at 14 this morning at my house which is warmer than expected and as per the norm 0 snow overnight.
Whopping 13 is all we ever got down to in Harlan. 0 snow last night and about 1/4 of inch total for the entire week. Season total us at 3 inches now for snow:(
Astounding poor model performance, trend predictions and overall pattern, this winter has derailed for SE KY. Maybe we get some in February and March but still this winter has not been predicted very well. Oh well, at least our heating costs and issues with frozen pipes are minimal compared to northern KY and especially the northern states!
You still didn’t get any snow at all last night either?
Not a flake to be seen just now some flurries floating around .
Dropped to 6 in my area last night. With some perspective – it’s not that cold. It’s just winter.
Agreed.
Some light snow early and the current temperature + 9 degrees F. Clouds hold in the heat as you all know. As for the month of January 2019 we have recorded 4.98 inches of precipitation. The snowfall total around 7 inches for the month. One snow event totaled 4 inches which is nothing to write home about. Looking a various weather sites there are five different forecast out. All on the two day forecast agree after that not. I’m only going to take the two days out as to what to prepare for.
It’s difficult to trust any long range model at this point, after this latest system that looked so good a week ago went *poof.*
Thanks Chris. So we put away the snow boots for a few days and drag out the mud kickers, right? Hope that stuff tonight doesn’t make a mess, but it could. At least the wind is not cutting you in half when you walk outside today. I’ll take it. Have a Good Friday Eve everyone.
Looks like it got down to 7 here, already back up to 14 with southerly flow kicking in.. looking forward to the warmth, not looking forward to more rain.
DJC- It’s difficult to trust short term models. NowCasting is the future and the future is here.
14 this morning in London. Cold for sure. Record breaking cold that will be talked about for years? Um, no.
The cold outbreak last January that froze streams is the real deal. That was a prolonged period of subfreezing weather and legit cold. This has been really overblown by the media. I will say that wind chills were indeed brutal yesterday, calling off schools was justified. Calling off school today? Again, um no.
Thankfully I’m not a public figure saying that, I wouldn’t want the hound dog media and SJW’s on social media putting me on blast.
I agree last January was really cold early on…had like 6 or 7 consecutive days in single digits for lows. However, all because this blast of Arctic cold did nothing for your location these past couple of days does not diminish how impressive the cold has been for the northern part of the U.S. and even in parts of Kentucky, where coldest wind chills have not been this cold in 25 years
The polar vortex was legit in Ohio. This morning it was -5 at my house and that is just the temp. I’m in southeastern Ohio. They canceled mail service in parts of central Ohio due to extreme cold. How often does that happen!!! Only dusting of snow so far! Still hoping for some decent snows!!!!!☃️☃️☃️ Thanks Chris for keeping us so informed!
The USPS is broke. Why do you think they raised the price of stamps to 55 cents. I never heard of the postal service cancel delivery ever.
-5 isn’t all that unusual but it is cold
-62 wind chill in Minnesota was even considered “unusually” cold for them
Thanks, Chris. The Campbell County Mesonet site is a good indicator of the temperature of where I live given its elevation and location and it recorded a low temperature of -8. Not good stuff.
I had 8 degrees below zero and my sister had 10 below at her house in Jackson Ohio this morning. Jackson is in Southeast Ohio. Yesterday was terrible with the wind chill 25 to 30 below. No schools are open here. We have a little snow on the ground. Calling for some snow tomorrow.
Climate Change is now being openly discuss on the news media for political gain. Don’t buy into this trick. Just a way to get more money out of your pocket. I think everyone should burn Kentucky Coal in the old furnace we use to have. I’m sitting here in my home freezing to death with electric heat and a high bill on it’s way. We were never cold in a home that had a coal furnace in operation.
Is your home insulated properly? Double pane windows are great and make sure once a year your air ducts are clean also hire a hvac and give furnace a once a year cleaning, basically a check up.
I have a log home with triple pane windows ( double hung ) insulated metal standing seam roof and three new entry doors with storm doors. All walls insulated in the loft all the way to the basement. I have two heat pumps ( Goodman ) that are checked twice a year. I keep both thermostat upstairs and downstairs at 68 degrees and it’s still not like the old coal furnace I lived in when I was growing up. I wish I had a fire place like I had in my old house years ago, that would help.
Don’t “buy into” what nearly every scientist says is really happening? It’s not a political trick. It’s reality that some don’t want to believe.
I have found recently that back in the early days of weather forecasting that the overall climate has NOT changed world wide. Just look at the Arctic this winter with record cold and more wide spread deep snows than ever before. Folks we are being lied to and brain washed to believing this Global Faction that is trying to take over our country and I almost fell for it. No real evidence that climate change change is occurring all BS.
This. 97% of credible published literature (higher for those scientists in the earth science disciplines) back the obvious anthropogenic change to the climate. This is the same amount of backing for the carcinogenic effects of cigarettes and no one questions this. The only debate about climate change occurs with politicians and those in industry.
Not looking like big snow is likely for the next few weeks. Running out of winter runway. Spring surprise or bust.
Funny how this blog was built on big snow talk, but now the excitement bar is lower.
I’ll leave it up to that fury little creature to predict the weather for the next six weeks this Saturday.
I dropped to 1 degree this morning. Very cold for sure but not unusual or historic. I am now at a pathetic 2.9 inches of snow for the season. I dont see that improving anytime soon. Especially given the trend this season. I just hope the big warmup doesn’t jump start the growing season. Because I think the up and down temps continue. The warmups will last longer, as they usually do. But there could be some intense brief cold snaps.
The growing season starting in mid February most often leads to damage in an April freeze to ornamental plants. The old saying is ” Spring in February is worth nothing “
