Good afternoon, folks. Our day started with many areas well below zero across the bluegrass state. As this brutally cold air mass pulls away, a light winter weather maker rolls in tonight and Friday. This is likely to cause travel issues to develop.
This system has been well advertised for several days now. A mix of snow and freezing rain will work in tonight and early Friday…
As stated a few days ago, the models will miss the boat on the temps, so take the under on the forecast numbers. Arctic air is low and dense and the models have a tough time seeing that. Also, the ground is frozen and road temperatures are below freezing. Even if your thermometer is above freezing, the cold ground may cause a layer of ice to form.
The forecast models are all similar in where the greatest threat for a light snowfall is…
Hi Res NAM
GFS
New GFS
Canadian
Slick travel conditions are a good bet later tonight into the first half of Friday. Here are your tracking tools…
Temps behind all this will take off this weekend. Highs by Monday should make a run at 60, but with a few showers and even thunderstorms coming into play. Another arctic front then rolls in here by the middle of next week as temps come crashing WAY down. This boundary may become active as it slows down to our southeast.
The GFS shows this possibility…
The earlier run of the New GFS showed the potential on a greater scale…
I have you covered on WKYT starting at 4pm and with another KWC update this evening. Make it a good one and take care.
Looks like more rain and backside flurries.
My meager estimate of one 6″ to 8″ snow eve. seems a lofty aspiration now.
event
Would you take a bet that there will be more than 30 days of 90 degree temperatures this summer before just one 6-8 inch snowfall before winter and early spring season ends?
If I were a gambler, i would take the 30 days of 90 degree temps over the 6 to 8 inch snowfall chances any day of the week. Especially considering where we live and the pattern we are stuck in.
And you would need to pick a location not just anywhere in the state
Oh, look who shows up to complain about a lack of snow but conveniently has no comments on the day when he actually had some snow in his area.
Who?
Yeah who’s complaining?
If you are replying to me? I did comment I received a sugar coating of snow yesterday, that was gone by mid afternoon. If I hadn’t actually seen the flakes I could have confused it with a heavy frost. If you think a trace of snow is noteworthy then you must think drizzle Is the same as a flash flood.
Showing model runs a week out Are useless. Only that day of the storm will tell the truth.
But there so pretty to look at..

Pretty or not, the performance of the FV3-GFS has been astoundingly pitiful, even compared to all other models who have all performed subpar this winter. The FV3 is no where near ready to take the place of the old GFS, which btw has outperformed all other models this season to date.
You’re not telling me nothing I don’t already know..The only time I seen the FV3 do well was the early Dec. system when it locked on about eight days out and didn’t waiver..Personally I could care less if I see another flake of snow..Just like to have some warm and dry weather
I see nothing exciting
Looks like Louisville MS and Jefferson County AL will get more snow than Louisville KY will again. Southeastern storm…….again
Louisville is at 8″ for the year.
Looks like we will pick up our yearly avg. of 12.5 ” snowfall.
Uneventful sums it up.
I’m not complaining but would like a 4+ inch event.
Me too
RIP Winter.
False
True Jeffy…and right on Jimbo!
I don’t know how something (Winter) can be over, when it never started….LOL
Same ole songs from same ole people. If I remember correctly last year January did lack of snow action also only that February ,March and even April provided the snow action. Will see how February and March plays out this year.
Every snow lover in KY who’s disappointed with this winters lack of snowfall should at least take comfort with the knowledge that they have certainly had more snow than my yard has had…still have not made it to the one inch mark as nearly every area around Bell and Whitley Co, is working on 3+ inches….even the Tennessee Valley just one mile away has had no less than 3″ of snow in almost all locations. All I can do is laugh…
Well snowlovers, that word is appearing again…potential… I still don’t see a chance for a good snowfall for you guys this winter, but I’m happy to 60 degrees, of course it comes with rain..
I’m ready for 90s and hazy. 😉
Your time will come Hamlin
Me too and my bold prediction is our first 90 degree day falls during the last week of April / first week of May time frame (in my neck of the woods).
For your backyard, of course.
That’s usually all that matters is a person’s backyard.
This setup is not your rain to back-end flurries, but the other way around.
Pretty stinking cold the past couple of days, even for Nitwits
Looking at radar and wondering hoe does any of KY play into what is coming. The direction and strength of this looks to be 0-1 inch all the way to Indy. Moisture starved for sure. Or am I missing something.
Also, backloaded winter to start next weeend through first couple weeks of March. Going to be a wild end to winter…
I thought it started this week or last week? 😉
Not seeing it
Me either.
Bjenks, warm front coming from the south going to provide some lift.
latest hrrr shows even se ky getting some front end snow, nws may extend that advisory se to include a couple more counties.
