Good Saturday, everybody. After a harsh week of winter weather, we have a mild surge of days settling into the bluegrass state. If you’re a spring lover like myself, this is just a little glimpse of what’s to come later in March. A glimpse, by definition, means temporary. If you’re a winter weather lover like myself, we have a lot more of that still ahead. Yes, I’m a seasonally conflicted weatherdude. 🙂
Temps today hit the middle 40s in the north with middle 50s for the south as skies become partly sunny. Southwest winds really take control of the pattern on Sunday and that boosts your back porch thermometer toward 60 or a little bit better.
We keep the milder air through the middle of next week, but, in true Kentucky weather fashion, rain crashes our mild weather party. How much rain falls over the next week depends on where a boundary sets up in our region.
The GFS is just north with it…
The new version of the GFS is farther south…
That model continues to have a colder overall look, bringing the winter weather potential in here by late in the week…
Regardless, this is another hyper-active period setting up over the next few weeks. That’s evident on the precipitation numbers…
New GFS

I’ll get you another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Should be a good morning for viewing rime ice on trees if you live in a dense fog area like myself
My subdivision street was slick this morning with the freezing fog…be careful out there.
Freezing fog here in central Kentucky. Hopefully we will see the sun today or tomorrow along with the predicted warmer temperatures before the Blizzard hits latter this week. LOL
Happy Ground Hog day !
Groundhog, I can’t spell worth a darn.
Don’t let that groundhog go back in. Block off the entrance so he has to stay out.
Rain, rain, rain. Kentucky has to be #1 in the nation in rain and last in sunshine.
Seems we are going to be lucky to get an ankle biter. This could be a new low bar snow winter.
BTW, I saw a poster mention 6.5″ of snow so far for Lexington. Where was that measured- a metal cub on the top of a cell phone tower? 😉 We have about 3″ so far in Richmond- not using a metal cup on a cell phone tower.
We have not covered a sidewalk here in Knox Co. I couldn’t scoop up all the snow in my yard this winter and get an inch total.
If that 6.5″ is an official tally, I would like to know who did the tallying and the method used for said tally. Facetious news!
It’s accurate. Back in November and all the dustings or small events we’ve had so far 0.7, 1.2, 2.1, etc. Those add up even though nothing really that significant
That’s amazing. Just south of the river we have had less than half that…
Snow lovers in Knox Co have had it rough….it’s been years since you guys had a decent snowfall. Only about an inch in Bell this year and just over a half in last year but we did get the big snow 3 years ago that left you out. Hopefully the pattern flips next year
Correction: your house has that much.
Snow is AWOL.
Chris, you didn’t mention anything about Groundhogs Day????
This winter is such a disappointment it has gotten you rattled, lol!!
No shadow for Phil early spring everybody.
Get the boat ready! Putting new line on fishing reels today!
Bring on the spring. My thumbs are turning green.
This winter has certainly been a tough one to predict. Maybe Spring will be early. Nothing right now out there to indicate that Winter is going to return. As in the past we could have all four seasons of weather events in February and March and sometimes April.
For you who complain about the lack of snowfall in your backyard, you are not alone you backyard geocentrics. Boston, MA has only recorded 2.3″ this entire snow season. I’m sure we could find similar complaints there and rightfully so. Just a few years ago, they had truckloads of snow dumped into the nearby river because there was so many piles of it.
I read where Joe Bastardi was saying this year would be like 77/78 or 95/96 or 2009/2010. Because the analogs matched. I don’t know how anyone could give seasonal prediction when models can’t hit from 2 days out. Especially in Winter.
Number one rule of winter…never take Bastardi seriously….to here him tell it, every winter is gonna be another 77/78 and the analogs always match but they just NEVER seem to pan out. He is a joke and irrelevant.
I like reading the winter forecast predictions..I look at them as just fun reading knowing good and well no one knows how each winter will play out..I’ve said all along analogs should not be used because of a changing climate..It’s just Impossible to predict the weather..Just to many moving parts and probably things that haven’t been discovered yet..
I agree with you. But I heard him a few days ago saying how everything is turning out how he said it would. He also said the area from the Ohio Valley to the mid Atlantic is above normal snowfall. I don’t know where he came up with that one. You wouldn’t know it was Winter here unless you looked at the calendar.
54° Sunny in “The Land of Bourbon” here! (Bardstown, for the unenlightened..) Nice day out there. Surprised that I am actually LIKING it! 🙂 No wind, kind of warm (I didn’t need a jacket…I’m thin, so kill me NOW! 😉 ). I think this is just a lull like we in the OV are (or should be…)used to by now. Plenty of Winter left to go for us Snow Lovers! 🙂
Welp..gonna try this again!
Sunny & 54° in Bardstown. (No need for Bourbon today-unless ya’ just want it….lol!) Nice day out there, no wind, plenty of mud, tho. Taking the little Weiner/JRT out on leash-no dog needs 5 baths a day within 3 hours?!
Still thinking Winter has plenty left for us. This is just a typical lull. We always get it, I don’t think anyone can deny?
That’s amazing. Just south of the river we have had less than half that…
The forecast via Accuweather and TWC has mainly 50s and 60s the next two weeks. They don’t see any cold. The Winter that wasn’t.
For your part of the world…the word phrase of the day is backyard geocentric
If you trust Accuweather and TWC, you are insane.
Long range winter forecasting are like throwing darts with your eyes closed but the funny thing is when their wrong they don’t mention it but every now and then a blind squirrel finds a nut long range forecasting is a joke week forecasting is a joke trust me I’ve been burnt to many times as a farmer I live and die by the weather
About like them trying to predict hurricanes. Some of the highest number of predicted hurricane seasons have ended up with some of the fewest.
Found some mint growing in my backyard. My cabbage and Kale are still going strong.
What then of the kohlrabi?
