Wednesday Evening Update

Good evening, folks. We are rolling toward Valentine’s Day with wind and milder air settling in. This kicks off another active setup that can bring some snow chances our way. That includes the chance to put some snow on the ground by Friday night and Saturday morning.

Let’s begin with Valentine’s Day and roll forward. Temps will be deep into the 50s and may hit 60 in a few areas. This happens on a strong southwesterly wind that can crank to 40mph at times. With the wet ground, a few trees may be knocked down.

Showers arrive Thursday evening and take us into early Friday as a cold front drops in. That boundary stalls near the Kentucky/Tennessee border as low pressure develops and works along it Friday night. That brings rain and snow our way…

Here’s the area I’m highlighting for the best chance to pick up on a light snowfall…

The active pattern will throw another system our way as early as Sunday with additional systems early next week. Those will put our region walking a fine line between snow and rain. #teamspring

Enjoy the evening and take care.

Indeed,#Teamspring! As a winter weather lover, I have been let down too many times this season by mother nature and her bi-polar tendencies and am ready for spring planting.

  2. Russell says:

In other words the same ole same ole….and WKY still wondering where is the snow….RIP winter.

  3. Winterlover says:

Chris bold prediction of a wind driving snowstorm for this winter may or may not materialize as winter is winding with a month left. But who knows what mother nature will bring in March or early spring. Oh by the way I did see a fly flying around at work today maybe that’s an early sign of spring. Lol

  4. Terry says:

There you go Jimbo….maybe you get a quick bit but will be a flash melt-off. I am not even convinced it will be cold enough in both the upper atmosphere and lower for even your area. Maybe you get some…not holding my breathe for ya.

    • Jimbo says:

I have seen this song and dance before countless times especially last March. It never worked out. And this year is even worse for snow lovers than last year. The locals only have a mix forecasted. But I agree with Terry if I do get any accumulation it will be early followed by a flash melt. Plus 40’s and 50’s predicted after Saturday so all the other systems will be rain.

  5. Prelude says:

Rather odd to see the NAM not showing anything for the Friday night system.

  6. Debbie says:

How long have we been walking that “fine line”? I’m tired walking. Ready to just jump.

  7. Mike S says:

You know it’s bad around here when even the high summits of Mauna Kea and Loa in the Hawaiian islands are going to get more snow and ice than us….They are under a Winter Storm warning through Friday

  8. Which Way Is the Wind Blowing says:

I guess Louisville will nickel & dime it’s way to reach its average yearly snowfall.

    • Jimbo says:

I don’t think there are enough days left this Winter for Huntington to nickel and dime it’s way to a normal snow year.

      • Terry says:

TRUTH! It will take about a foot of snow for both your area and all of east KY to reach average. Jackson is only about 30% of season average and we are doing much worse in SE KY. It will take one big storm or at least a couple of medium hits to reach average. We still need 2 feet to reach Chris’s forecast.

  9. Chris Mercer says:

Team Spring! 2018 was the 2nd warmest February on record in Lexington. 2017 was the warmest February on record. 2019 is tracking to be in the Top 10 warmest. February is spring!

  10. Farmer 43 says:

It’s like tuning into a rerun only to receive the same ole outcome winter is on the way only to turn out to be mild and rain I just don’t understand putting your neck out week after week for the models to say a few days later that I gotcha why would you do that to yourself when you been fooled so many times

  11. msd says:

I’m not pro or against spring. I’m pro sunshine. No rain is good enough. The 40-50 degree days are perfect for getting back into my running.

  12. BubbaG says:

Come on CB, just let go 😉 The models for snow make jokes seem more serious this winter. Just embrace the coatings, mix, heavy rain and shower in it’s pureness of winter letdown. Better than big ice, so we at least have that. As far as big or even biggish snow, seems we are done this winter. Well, except for north of I64 and higher elevations of course, since seems they have a shot. Maybe.

  13. Bjenks says:

Louisville needs 4 inches to be average. We will have 20 by seasons and will still be a miserable winter. We need an old skool thumping.

  14. Roger says:

I live in the middle of Whitley County. I don’t know what our average snowfall is but in my backyard I’ve had less that 2 tenths of an inch total since the first flakes fell in November.
