Good Thursday, folks. It’s shaping up to be a rather active weather day with rounds of showers and thunderstorms developing and rolling across the state. Some of the storms may be strong or severe as we kick off a wet period that takes us through Kentucky Derby Saturday.
Let us begin with today before rolling forward. As mentioned, storms come at us in waves and clusters and could be severe. Here’s the current Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
Damaging winds and large hail are the primary players with any severe storm going up. Heavy rainfall may cause quick rises on area creeks and streams, too. It’s not going to be constant rain today and temps can reach 80 outside of the storms.
Additional rounds of showers and storms will be with us into Kentucky Oaks Day Friday. Once again, it’s not going to be all day rains and some strong storms could fire up.
Derby Day is taking on more of a wet look as low pressure works in from the southwest. Many of the models are hinting at more of a widespread rain event. Here’s how the European Model sees it…
Temps may not get out of the low and middle 60s for some.
Rainfall numbers through Saturday night are up there with a general 1″-2″ of rain showing up, with locally higher amounts…
After a break in the storms for Sunday into parts of Monday, the stormy pattern looks to kick back in. Rain numbers for the next few weeks…
I lave you with your Thursday storm tracking tools…
Make it a great day and take care.
Yuck. We need a two-week dry spell.
Forecasters have been yelling rain and the threat for severe weather for over a week now. Maybe today our luck will run out ? It’s impressive to see the explosion of storms over the southern plains. One after another of storms and flooding rains training over the same areas. Bound to cause high water issues in those low lying areas. Something the farmers do not need. Yesterday, here in my county of Taylor we were place under a “Red flag warning” because of drying winds in the forested areas.
Solid action coming into Western KY right now but nothing severe-warned yet.
Did Chris extend the olive branch to Louisville? WLKY in Louisville has a new meteorologist (Chris Johnson) who came over WKYT.
I like Katie the best.
A watch has been issued for my county of Taylor for “severe hail and damaging winds along with the red flag warning which was issued yesterday. WOW, doesn’t sound too good for my location in the state. Hope I’m not homeless as a result ? Question : What is severe hail ?
Finally had to turn on the air conditioners for the first time this year as the humidity jumped to 55% in the house. It quickly brought it down to 39% after being on for two hours. I hate hot, humid weather with severe weather a possibility.

My d*a*m*n computer posted my last post twice. LOL
…..Stinks living in Harlan during pop up t-storm season. The storms get sheared to death and steered around the mts. Storms all around and no rain here here today.
Rhododendrons don’t want rain while in bloom.
