Good Saturday everyone. What a Friday of wild weather across the bluegrass state. We had one of the hottest days on record and had storms pound parts of the area with damaging winds. I will say it until I’m blue in the face… extreme is the new normal. We should have another extreme weather day going out there today with triple digit temps and some storms cranking.
A derecho formed near Chicago early Friday and then took a southeasterly turn into the Ohio Valley. This bad boy grazed northern and eastern Kentucky with damaging winds of 70mph. This complex of storms also sent out a belch of wind into areas of the state that didn’t receive a drop of rain. Here’s a neat graphic showing the progress of the derecho…
This was an amazing wind machine that caused tremendous destruction in Ohio, West Virginia and all the way to the DC area.
Can we get in on another one today? The atmosphere may try to spin up something similar and that’s something we will need to watch for. Outside of any possible storms… temps will hit 100 degrees again in many areas. I have you all set to track the storms and heat…

More heat and additional storm threats will be with us Sunday into early next week. Scattered storms will try their very best to become more widespread in the coming days.
Have a great Saturday and take care.
Any chance of Somerset getting some rain today?
We were without power for 10 hours. Our farm is a MESS. One huge tree came down and went through the fence. There are branches and leaves on almost every square inch of our 25 acres. We didn’t make it to the other side before dark so no telling what happened down the hill.
I do not like DERECHOs. I do not want another DERECHO!!!
Chris asked the question last night if we’d rather have 80 mph winds with 2 inches of rain or nothing. Well, I do not want whatever wind hit us with no rain, but 80 mph winds would not be fun either. Can’t we have rain? Just plain ol’ rain? Why is everything so up and down?
We all should have KNOWN this would happen with an all time high annual rain last year
well to me YES IT HOT but not ALL TIME HOT. fact is the HUMIDITY not bad for these temps. just imagine if the humidity was out of hand, then u start hollering this is really bad.
my power was out for nearly 9 hours. not too much in the way of damage, but i have not been all over the farm yet. i am sure there is more damage to the barn that started during the March 2nd storm. just how high were those gusts of wind near Clays Ferry?
Winds were strong enough to push heavy flower pots over and make a general garden mess Trees and shrubs are going to be history as we have not had moisture in 4+ weeks and unless we can re-create a version of Noah’s deluge. And we have another week of this heat? Is this the longest and driest stretch for this area?
Driving after a “derecho” has blasted through is about as bad as driving in snow. When stoplights go out or go on flash, I found out last night it gets pretty darn dangerous out there.
The modeling is persistently showing scattered coverage of t-storms here Monday-Friday. . Here’s hoping everybody gets at least something this week.
Our power was out 3 hours or more, that wind came in like nothing I had seen before I was sitting outside and you could hear the wind coming before it ever got here and started blowing a transformer blew out beside my house the power line came down and hit a tree and it caught on fire so we had the Good people from the Fire Dept and the Ky Power who got us back with power very quickly thank you.
We received no rain whatsoever with the horrible wind yesterday……will we see winds like that again this evening? I’m very curious to know how those form?
We had 80 mph winds last evening. At 20 hours without power, possibly 5-7 days is being said before restored. Quite a mess!!!
Where are you? That is terrible. I don’t do well when we lose power due to ice storms but nothing could be worse than no power in 100+ degrees. How is everybody supposed to stay cool? Good luck to you.
We are in southeast Ohio. Got lucky, had a full tank of gas. Taking a ride to cool down and admire the mile long lines at the few operating gas stations.
My thermometer outside on my porch shows 117 degrees. Either it’s broken, or I’m in a very hot spot. My air conditioner is running non-stop.
I pray it doesn’t break down from the strain. My heart goes out to all of you that lost power from the high winds.
we had 5 trees come down on our farm, the roof ripped off of part of the barn, alot of big limbs down as well, we have power but our phone has been out since last night! I lived on this hill for 20 yrs and have never seen the wind like that!
Power is out for almost 22 hours now in Ashland and are saying maybe the 6th of July before everyones power is restored.
I am so sorry to hear that. People can’t handle this kind of heat for long. Do you have a way to run your refrigerator and maybe some fans? Good luck.
Oh my goodness! That is horrible! I hope you guys find a way to get some relief from this heat.
My sister in Hurricane, W. VA. is without power also.
Awful – couldn’t imagine! I think I would try to live in the car AC to get some relief. I can’t think of anything else. Drink lots of ice water which will make you feel chilled and cool your body temp
Remember that summer we didn’t hit 90? Yeah. I miss that.
KY weather is Bi-Polar, Chris is saying a better chance of rain the next few days? The NWS says very little chance if any! Come on Chris B. my faith is with you!
My sister and her family live in Hurricane, W.VA. just out of Huntington.
They are without power and it could be July 6th before it’s back on. I think I’ll drive over and get her tomorrow morning. She can stay with me until the power is restored.
