Good Thursday, everyone. It’s another day of showers and storms across the region as the stormy pattern refuses to go away. If anything, it may increase a bit into the upcoming weekend as a northwest to southeast corridor of action sets up.
As always, let us begin with today. Rounds of showers and storms will be floating around, especially across central and eastern Kentucky. The ground can’t hold any more water, so local flash flooding issues may develop… Again.
There is a very small break coming for the first half of Friday, but that closes quickly as we watch a big cluster of strong to severe storms develop to our northwest. That may roll southeast into the region as early as Friday evening and continue into Saturday morning. As a matter of fact, the flow this weekend may feature more than one of those storm clusters…
The models have really been picking up on this action very well of late…
Those kinds of storms can bring an increased threat for wind damage. Here’s the Friday Severe Weather Outlook map from the Storm Prediction Center…
These weekend storms may also pack a ton of rain and lightning. The rainfall is also likely to bring a renewed threat for flash flooding to our region.
The stormy setup should hold into the first few days of next week, with the possibility for a few more strong to severe storms showing up.
I leave you with your Thursday storm tracking toys…
Make it a great day and take care.
Friday night and beyond during the weekend really has my attention as a NW FLOW can really enhance the rainfall in Harlan Co due to favorable topography for lift! I have seen some of my highest one day totals from systems that come in from a NW orientation. Yikes.
Severe storm direction and it’s possible my county of Taylor will get in on the action. Late yesterday we had a storm that had more bark than bite and only drop 0.74 inches. A good rain which we needed. With the soil type I have, a couple of days of wind and Sunshine would completely dry the soil to dust.
WPC has most of Central and especially SE KY in high risk for repeat t-storms today with 2 to 4 inches of rain from now just through 1PM!

Already, I am getting some training t-storms in Harlan.
Gotta love summer time. Sunshine, lake time, pool time, golf, just all kinds on outdoor activities to enjoy unless you live in the rainforest of Kentucky. You can’t fault the kids for not getting outside in this new climate. These are not the summers that I had as a kid growing up. It used to not rain every day or every other day.
We have a lot of Summer to go through yet. The beginning of Summer starts tomorrow at noon EST. I’m sure this wetness will cease at some point and then we will begin to complain about the awful heat, humidity and how dry it is. For me I’m ready for Autumn and winter 1976-77 style !
I don’t know if we will or not. I have to spend a lot of time outside in the summer and it stayed wet all last summer. After the last few years of winter you will hear no complaints from me about humidity, dry days, or heat. I’ve had enough rain to hold me over for a few drier than normal months.
last few years of summer not winter.
Terry, not weather related, but I was wondering how well the Mountain Laurel bloom was in and around Harlan this Spring ? We have some growing wild in this county but the bloom was not impressive here.
I honestly didn’t get a chance to go into the mountains during bloom time. You can see at lot of rhododendrons but not much of any Mt laurel in the valley here…have to go deep into the woods and higher up in elevation to see it.
Thanks Terry, sounds like the mountains around Harlan is my place to be with all my favorite plants growing wild.
Heavy storms blew through my county about an hour ago. Had to unplug all communication advice’s because of lightning. Very heavy rain but very little in the way of wind. Guessing, I would say over an inch of rain.
Correction : on my above post devices not advice’s
Harlan is still way under what many have seen this week in nearby counties but I am closing in on 2.5 inches since Sunday and getting saturated with plenty to come yet!
Everyone, have a great afternoon and stay dry.
Well we got a gully washer yesterday here in WKY… but then it cleared off and the sun came back out. This has gotten old real quick ugh!!
Rip summer 🙁
I think this June will set a state monthly record for most stations as wettest or near wettest ever! Not everywhere yet, but many areas are getting close to 10 inches on the month with plenty of rain to come!
Kind of impressive storms that could arrive late tomorrow to Tennessee and Kentucky….. from the northern plains which is kind of an unusual direction. Derecho? Maybe not quite that. Still might be good to make sure backup generators are working ok. 😉
It does remind me of that derecho from the summer of 2012. I was too far south to be affected, but I was still amazed how far ahead the gust front was. Some areas got little or no rain, just a very damaging wind from the gust front which required a severe t-storm warning. Lots of downed trees, powerlines, even some roof damage in areas that got a direct hit. That derecho made it all the way to the coast of Virginia/North Carolina!
Currently sitting at a rest stop between Rolla Missouri and St Louis. On way home from convention in OKC headed back to Scioto County Ohio. Absolute downpour for last thirty minutes. Cannot see to drive. Looks like that is headed directly to western Kentucky.
Dont twitter or I would have sent last comment directly to Chris. If someone can send it to him feel free. Watched him on WSAZ while he was there and still follow blog.
