Good Wednesday, everyone. What’s left of Hurricane Barry continues to slowly work across the Ohio Valley, bringing more rounds of showers and storms. Torrential rains have been common over the past few days and will be out there again today. These torrential rains keep the local flash flood threat going and this may carry us into Thursday.
Once Barry gets out of the way, a quick-hitting surge of heat moves in before a big pattern reversal takes place early next week. This will lead to a period of cooler than normal air.
Let’s begin with today. Waves of tropical rain producing showers and thunderstorms will continue to work across the state, with the greatest emphasis across central and eastern Kentucky. A few storms can be on the strong side, but the flash flood threat is the main thing to watch for. Here are your tracking toys for the day…
A few showers and storms will fire back up on Thursday as low-level tropical moisture remains. Once again, we will need to be on guar for local flash flooding issues.
As the hotter air moves in for Friday, we just can’t shake the thunderstorms. Scattered boomers will be around as temps head toward 90 or so.
A similar setup will be with us this weekend as hot and humid weather continues. A scattered storm or two will be around on Saturday, but the storm action looks to ramp up on Sunday. That’s as a strong cold front dives in from the northwest into Monday. Strong to severe storms will be possible ahead of this front as MUCH cooler air takes control behind it…
There’s another front lurking behind that one later next week…
That’s a lot of below normal air showing up…
Bring. It. On. ๐
Have a great day and take care.
My lawn can use the rain and I can use the cooler air.
I had a rain shower early this morning but it wasn’t much. I don’t know about the cooler weather forecast for early next week. Too far off and the tract record on the presented weather models earlier did not materialize.
Excessive heat watch through Sunday, feel like temps as high as 110? Thatโs just great.
Yeah, from Thursday afternoon through Sunday. I hope those who have jobs outdoors will take the necessary precautions as this could be dangerous with the 110 degree heat indices. It has been a long time since we had an excessive heat watch.
Storm total from what energy is left from Barry 0.10 inches. Also we had a brief wind event yesterday evening that took out the top of one of my Red Oak trees. I went out to inspect the damage and it look like the large top of the tree was twisted off. Maybe this was an F0 tornado ? When I was a weather spotter years and years ago we had to learn what to look for in the damage to determine if it was a tornado or just straight line wind damage.
So far the rain has been very scattered. Some getting it and others none. Looks like a localized event. I’m ready for cooler weather myself.
Also all you people that have a creek close by your house this what I did for water for my garden. I had a pedestal sump pump that I took the float off of and fixe it where I could hook a garden hose to it. I placed screen wire around it and weighted it down. I took some brick and set them flat in the creek and set the sump pump on it. Then I tied it up high to some stakes so it would not fall over. Ran an electric cord to it and I was good to go. Had decent presser to water everything I had. The creek was clear water and not muddy. Everything grew just fine.
There you go very innovative !
Thanks.
Me too and the heat wave hasn’t even started. I’m ready for some Winter talk to tell you the truth. LOL
I was looking at Gulf of Mexico on the twelve hour water vapor loop and also on the satellite on Weather Street, and it looks like there could be another developing storm in the Gulf in the near future ? Might as well look where the weather is most interesting.
Have a great afternoon and evening everyone !
Even the teleconnection PNA shows a pronounced trough west which should mean ridge east, corresponding to our upcoming heat event; then, later, a pronounced ridge west should lead to a trough east, that hopefully will bring us a much needed cooling off period.

…and yes, I finally received some rainfall, not a lot, but at least the rain barrel is near full again.
I finally got a dab in Harlan and hopefully more this afternoon. I will just say it, Barry stinks as far as KY rainfall compared to most tropical systems that have tracked towards our region over the past several years but most areas were excessively wet earlier this year and the recent dry weather was needed!
Rain from Berry was a big disappointment in my neck of the woods. 2 showers-one Monday afternoon and another this morning-was it. Still under a half inch total the past 3 weeks.
That sure is a healthy complex of storms that began in Iowa earlier today. I wonder if WKY gets slammed tonight?!
It’s even headed into W Tennessee. Seeing some distant lightning from Nashville!
I really need to be in bed as I’m due early am in the office, but the weather weenie in me keep overruling ๐ ๐ .
I am the same! I cannot sleep if I am tracking weather that may impact my local, especially severe weather or snow:)
Much of Kentucky and other states to the west, northwest and north of KY have gone from an Excessive Heat Watch to an Excessive Heat Warning this evening.
Somewhat crazy that more northern states will have higher heat index values than southern states. But the same basic thing happened back in July 1995 when hundreds lost their lives in the city of Chicago alone.
