Severe Thunderstorm Watch

Good Sunday afternoon everyone. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is now out for much of the bluegrass state until 10pm. Storms will continue to fire up into the evening hours and many of these will go severe. Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats.

Here’s a work at the watch and the latest warnings…

WW0482 Warnings

This watch overlaps a watch already in place across far northeastern Kentucky. Both watches go until 10pm.

These storms will contain a ton of lightning and torrential rainfall. Local flash flooding can’t be ruled out with the stronger storms.

Here’s regional radar…

I will have updates as needed and will send out warnings via twitter. @kentuckyweather.

Have a great rest of your Sunday and take care.

  1. Todd says:

At this point I would take some severe weather just to get a little rain, Frankforts desert dome is holding off all storms so far!

  2. JavaJoe says:

My NOAA radio did not alert for the thunderstorm watched. I just checked and it is not broadcasting at all. I’m in Lexington on channel 1. Anyone else having issues?

  3. Todd says:

100 degrees in Frankfort, sunny, flooding rains in southern Ind., radar looks like a perfect donut hole over Franfort, now this is getting just stupid?????

    • pattyVersailles says:

Yes, there is a hole and Versailes is in it too! We haven’t seen rain since the wind took out our electricity out last week and then we didn’t get enough to see it had rained the next morning. I guess I being a skeptic because those storms in Louisville look like they’re weekening!

  4. Misty says:

I didn’t know it was Christmas again already!

  5. Sancho Panza says:

Same thing here in East Louisville too, Todd. Unbelievable isn’t?!!

  6. Marie says:

Beautiful, glorious rain in south Lex, Wyndham hills area, pea size hail also

  7. Bright and sunny here with an air temp of 101 and a heat index of 114. There seems to be rain all around us, but nothing here yet. Maybe later!!

  8. Jason says:

Heat index at 107 here in Breathitt Co. according to mesonet.. wanted to mow the yard before the rain hit , don’t know if i can stand it!

  9. MarkLex says:

    Northwest Lex

    *****nothing******

And it looks like what’s moving slowly to this area from south lex is weakening.

  10. David in Gtown says:

    Georgetown=Nothing either.
Will no rain today have an effect on the high temps this coming week? We haven’t had a drop since last Sunday, and that wasn’t much.

  11. Sancho Panza says:

East Louisville has yet to see a drop……

  12. Todd says:

The dome is alive and well in Frankfort, looks like a few sprinkles at best out of this weather watch plus 70 percent chance of rain, sounds like Frankfort Area is not alone in this latest miss! The rich keep getting richer, and you know the story on the rest of us! Time to go water the tomatoes :(

  13. Lincoln says:

Without power, Tate’s creek area of lex. Went out around 4:30

  14. KP says:

Lots of rain in my part of Bourbon County. Not much wind but nonstop lightning. The temperature was right at 100 an hour ago but now it is 75. I hope everybody gets in on this!

Todd, surely something has to get to you. You must be very frustrated.

  15. Emerson Biggins says:

Absolutely nothing in Nicholasville, Again and again and again

  16. feederband says:

The dome is over my place in the metro. I have a few drops but nothing substancial. As the temps dropped earlier I knew that was the end of our severe wx chances. Bummer.

  17. Jen in Sadieville says:

RAIN!!!! We have glorious rain in Sadieville. Lots of lightning, no tv and the power keeps blinking…but we have rain!

  18. Kelly in Louisville says:

Once again the forecast for rain is a total bust. Just unbelievable.

  19. Ramsey says:

Shelbyville is dry as a bone. Still. I was really hoping I wasn’t going to have to water tonight.

  20. David in Gtown says:

Flash flood warning for Scott, not a drop of rain in my part of Scott (subdivision behind Georgetown CVS).

    • Jen in Sadieville says:

Im so sorry David, daughter lives there too…not a drop! It’s pouring up here in Sadieville. Maybe you guys will get in on the next round.

  21. Hannah says:

Not a drop at our place in Southern Franklin Co. I don’t think we could buy a drop of rain. The radar is depressing.

  22. Bill L says:

The rain forms, dances to the southwest of Louisville, then breaks apart like ghosts as it crosses into Jefferson County. East Louisville has received NOTHING. My thirsty yard and garden will not be quenched and may not even see a single hint of actual water. Snow Dome at work?

  23. Jason says:

These are the type of pulse storms that just meander around, VERY localized. Not really a widespread rain. As we have seen already, someone may get 2 in. of rain here and a few miles down the road not a drop.

  24. joyce says:

No rain in burgin. I can’t remember the last time it rained here.

  25. Todd says:

Update! Frankfort East has maybe 1tenth of an inch. About 3 miles north of my local 1in. Plus! I guess I have taken this to a unhealthy level. Gongrats to those who get the good stuff, all of ky needs it!

  26. MarkLex says:

So far not a drop in northwest Lex. Yesterday when this front was coming through, I had a sinking feeling this exact thing was going to happen…….Some get too much rain, others get nothing and I just knew that mine would be the latter.

Marie – not sure what you mean. I never saw dark red or even light blue over my part of the county. It’s so funny because last night east lexington and winchester had those pop up storms and got a pretty decent rain, and again today, that’s where all the rain was…………..My yard literally looks like hay! I know we’ve had droughts before, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen people’s yards in such pitiful shape.

  27. Andy Rose says:

    You guys make me laugh

  28. MichaelT says:

Mark… Definitely the worst I’ve seen yards out here in the 10 years I’ve been here. Not a drop of rain so far today…

  29. Jeff Hamlin says:

Nice rain and thunder here in Danville.

  30. MT says:

Finally some good rain here in n.e. KY! Has been raining off & on for about two hours. Temps hit around 102 here this afternoon so this rain sure is wonderful! Hope everyone in KY gets a good soaker.

  31. endleswavz says:

I’m holding out hope that we will receive some rain over night in NW Fayette county. It looked promising and sprinkled a bit but never materialized. I’m starting to feel like I am back in Kirkuk!

  32. jeanette says:

    E-Town is under a dome. :D
We got an hour of thunder and lightning and 5 mins of rain. Hopefully we’ll get some overnight. Its been like this for 3 weeks now, everyone else gets rain and e-town gets none. LOL we are always in the middle of a big circle of nothing on the radar. Otherwise there is big red on the radar barreling towards us and then! Pfffttttt……. Fizzle. Heartbreaking. Makes me wanna run down the street screaming like a crazy person.

    I have tomatoes people!!!

    :/

  33. Sue (Flatwoods Ky) says:

at 1 pm today temp was 98 deg, and within an hour of the rain starting the temp dropped to 73 deg!!!! we have had around 1 inch of rain today! Much needed rain but can do without the storms!!!!

  34. Bill L says:

total bust…..not even enough to perk up the tomatoes…

  35. Mike says:

Am I the odd one out? In Richmond things are dry and hot…but it’s summer time and most summers seem to be dry and hot. Most summers the lawns go brown for a few weeks, we usually have temps in the 90s (100+ for a few days in a row is odd, I will give you that…) This still seems in the fat part of the bell curve to me. Big picture – extremes are normal around here, they were when I was a kid living here and have been in the 8 years since I returned.

  36. Mike says:

If everyone is getting “none” where is all the rain going?
