Good Tuesday to one and all. We are heading into a fairly active setup across the Ohio Valley as rounds of showers and storms target our part of the world. Some of those storms out there today could be on the strong side as this pattern begins to skew wetter than normal. Oh yeah… some cool shots of air also show up.
Let’s start with today’s thunderstorm potential. A complex of strong to severe storms may roll in here from the northwest this afternoon and evening. The greatest risk for this is across the western and central parts of the state. Here’s the current Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
The strongest storms may contain damaging winds and large hail. In addition to the severe threat, these storms will also put down a lot of rain and put on a pretty good light show.
A few more showers and storms will be noted on Wednesday as the front drops in from the northwest. That boundary then slows down right on top of us for Thursday and Friday, keeping showers and storms around. There’s even the chance some of that sticks around into the coming weekend as temps come way down.
The models are all on board with some good rain totals…
GFS
Canadian
European
As we head into the final week of August and closer to the Labor Day Weekend, the models are still on board with a significant trough developing across the middle of the country and spreading east. Here’s that trough on the European Model for the second half of next week…
The Ensembles are also on this and keep it goring into Labor Day Weekend…
GFS
Euro
I would be ok with that! You guys? 😉
I leave you with your Tuesday thunder tracking toys…
Have a great day and take care.
I like hot, dry and sunny. I don’t mind hot and humid. (I really like cold and snowy!) I like all the weather we get – so long as it doesn’t (seemingly) settle in, week and week after week. I am ready for a pattern change.
We have had a weather pattern change. It went from wet and cool to hot and dry which is really wearing out it’s welcome.
I think everyone on the Blog is wearing out on account of the heat, is the impression I got after reading yesterdays comment section. Some of the commentators need to step back and take a deep breath before posting their comments. It’s not Meteorologist Chris Bailey’s fault that we are in a typical August heat wave. Maybe the reason Chris doesn’t put much information out on how hot and dry it’s been here lately is because it is not a widespread event. I take it that Chris is alerting us today on the potential severe weather that may take place later today which is more important than talking and reporting on how dry your backyard is and how your garden has failed and your lawn is all burned up. This is typical for this time of the year, it’s the climate we live in. End of rant.
Schroeder you’re right on…just read some of those comments wow! CB does a great job here despite what some might say. Though it is hot and dry at least its not like thr summers of 83 and 88 where in 83 I remember the ground cracking badly.
Yeah, Russell those comments were upsetting to me also and I feel for Meteorologist Chris Bailey. When I first came on Chris’s Blog I admit that I posted some very “stupid” weather reports that went against Chris’s forecast and one day he called me out on it and I’m glad he did as I realize if I wanted to learn meteorology I need to change and read his weather blog more carefully and then I started to learn more and still learning and I’m grateful to him for this.
I was 4 years old in the summer of 1988 but know about how bad a drought the country was in and studied on it since. I vaguely remember sticking my entire hand in the ground…only 4 but still impressively large cracks in the ground over an inch wide! 2007 was the closest Harlan has seen to a drought that severe since!
I was 37 years old when that drought of the late 1980’s hit. I worked day and night to keep my nursery stock watered.
I am 36 now:)
Amen Schroeder, some people don’t appreciate what CB does..
Winterlover you always do a great job with your comments with less words. I tend to use too many words in my comments.
Adding to the above ” for some not me.”
Add this to my first post for today. Sometimes the post doesn’t go under the right post.
On Chris’s Blog this morning he has displayed the GFS and the EURO weather models and they are both in agreement a good sign going into meteorological Autumn. As the days get shorter the weather patterns almost always trend cooler if not colder.
Fingers crossed for some good rains. And that cool down looks sweet, too!
Right now it looks like a large complex of storms out of Illinois is moving southeast. I hope all of us will get a good rain out of this. Everyone will feel better if it rains.
Enough commenting for me today. Everyone have a great afternoon.
Fingers crossed that complex of storms holds up. I can’t even begin to count the number of times I have seen this scenario, excitement about some storms approaching from the NW, only to watch them fizzle out in southern indiana.
It is even worse in Harlan. Generally, what is left of a complex of storms from Central KY gets sheared to death by the mts here. Every now and then a good complex of storms can hold together in Harlan but usually if the storms hit in the early evening with maximum day time heating here.
A cl@$$ic MCS configuration plowing southeast from Illinois. A stout ridge of high pressure just to our south. Outflow winds are racing too far too fast from the storm’s core. If this keeps up, line will become more broken, weakening. However, perhaps some new convection ahead of the main line can become established later today. The atmosphere is supportive as long as any cap in place will cooperate.
Heat? What Heat? Honest question.
Something a flat earth believer would say 😉
Well, the storm finally hit West Irvine! Rain came from the wrong direction –south! Wind was unreal! Watched as neighbor’s tampoline came sliding across her yard. Thought it was coming across her fence. Rained very hard for about5 minutes. The rain was well needed!
Is that a derecho coming? Looks kinda similar as of 1:30pm.
98 at my house in Valley Station…New high for the year for me
Uh oh…that can’t be good. Just heard a transformer blow in the distance.
Prolonged gusts of over 40 mph here in Valley Station. One gust just a moment ago only lasted about a couple of seconds but was intense, closer to 50 mph, shook a few branches from some trees around here. Still, no rain yet.
Very little rain in Louisville… again.
Yep. Less than 0.10″ here.
Not even a drop in SE Jeff. Co.
Almost got my monthly total from this little bitty storm we had go through
I simply cant get anything in Harlan. Every cell goes around the mts where I live or gets sheared to death. I hope I finally get something later.
