Good Thursday, everyone. This active pattern I’ve been harping about for a while is about to finally kick into high gear with a few systems rolling in over the next few days. This means quite a bit of rain and wind, and the potential for a little winter weather for the weekend.
Before I get to all that, today is when the Winter Weather Forecast comes out on WKYT-TV this evening at 6. We will also have a live half hour show on the CW at 6:30. It’s always a fun time of year for winter weather lovers and haters alike, so make sure to tun in. And you guys may also want to stalk my twitter feed later today because something may drop before then.
Back to the weather of the now. We have a few showers working in here as winds gust up. Those winds may reach 30-40mph at times through this evening. Here are your radars to track today’s scattered showers in from the west…
A wave of heavier rain arrives tonight into early Friday as our front edges in from the northwest. That front may press just far enough south in the afternoon and evening to give us many dry hours. Temps will come way down from today, though.
Another low then works across southern and eastern Kentucky from late Friday night into Saturday. That low will bring rain and a big temperature gradient with it. Temps may hit 60 south and east of the track and stay in the upper 30s just north and west of the low. As that works east, we continue to see the possibility of some wraparound light snow and snow showers. The best chance goes from late Saturday evening into Sunday morning.
The NAM is giving us a nice look at this…
The GFS has been absolutely all over the place and I pity the forecasters who can’t use any other model. The latest run is finally seeing the chance for some flakes, but not until late night…
At the moment, any flake action doesn’t look like a big deal, but it’s something fun for us to track.
The setup for early Thanksgiving week continues to trend toward the weaker and farther east solution the Euro has been offering up. That could bring rain and gusty winds in here for Tuesday, with the chance for another touch of winter on the backside of the departing storm system…
The GFS is slowly losing the plains bomb storm and is sliding east…
I will have updates as I can later today. Make it a good one and take care.
I look forward to seeing your winter forecast. I know most seasonal snowfall predictions generally don’t work out, but your forecasts are generally more detailed than many. And, you better go above and beyond WYMT’s ENSO Neutral only basis for the upcoming winter temps and snow, lol….forecasts like that are too basic for my liking:)
I’m not looking forward to all the rain. If no snow then dry would be much more convenient.
This has to be the year Bobt…Knox has to get at least one good snow:)
Convenient yes but not really desirable. Don’t want to go into Spring dry. Here’s a vote for snow.
Looks like the beginning of another very wet winter. No matter if is rain, sleet, or snow it looks to be very wet again.
Well Bus, we both have seen those kind of Winters before, but it seems the mild, wet Winters are becoming the trend. In my opinion, the southeast ridge along with a very warm Atlantic Ocean has been delaying Winter for a number of years in the Ohio Valley by not allowing Polar air to move south and phase with the Subtropical jet to form a ” real deal ” storm system over the southern plains to give the Ohio valley a widespread snowstorm. Hopefully, this will all change in the next decade. I don’t know if I will be around to see it though which is a depressing statement to make to say the lease.
I believe your right Schroeder. The winters are trending warmer. When the cold does arrive it doesn’t seem to stick around. I know people probably get tired of me bringing up the 70’s. But I can tell them one thing they will never probably see in there life time that I witness. One week during the blizzard back then I saw snow drifts over 10 feet high in places. Near Wooster Ohio a semi driver was found in his truck. The only way they found him was by the cb antenna on top of his truck. He was in a 20 foot snow drift. But the main point I wanted to make was that in one week we had it never got out of being below zero for a week. We were below zero the hole time. Me and you will never see that again.
Ole one other thing I saw two times in my life time. They are snow rollers. We took pictures of them. Very neat thing to see.
I keep remembering things and there was a lot to remember. I lived in the country and I owned a bulldozer at the time. The township road I lived on hired me to bulldoze the road I lived on and another one. There was no enclosed cab on my dozer. Need I say more? That was one cold day setting on a cold chunk of steel. Lol.
Bus, those were interesting times, and I have the records on all the snowstorms and of course the Blizzard of 1978. We have seen lots of snow events and I hope those that haven’t will in the near future or I think sometime during the next decade ?
Snow rollers, I had the pleasure to see this too. Also snowdrifts up to 20 feet deep in my driveway the morning after the Blizzard of 1978 and a temperature of -17 degrees. All of this was in southwest Indiana where they closed Highway 41 north and called out the National Guard for help. They did a great job of saving lives !
Yes the guard where I live trucked the snow out of town.
I know the snow lovers on this blog would love to see it like we did.
Wymt 57 weather gave Warmer than average, wetter than average, in their winter forcast. Fun to compare to Chris’ forcast for winter.
It’s kind of like Christmas you never know what you might get. Or was that Forest Gump’s quote? Lol.
” Life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you are going to get “
Thanks CB looking forward to your winter forecast. Have a great day!!!
Ah, the WWE, the World of Winter Entertainment. Got my popcorn. I was expecting a Hollywood style trailer with scenes from past crippling winters, then toward the end a screen completely enshrouded by blizzard like conditions with someone slowly emerging into focus in the middle of the screen with his snow skis and U of K toboggan, all to the music of “2001: A Space Odyssey”.
Looking forward to the Bold Prediction….(of course, during that segment, need to play the final excerpt from the Star Trek song…’to boldly go where no man has gone before’)

If you don’t have anything good to say keep it to yourself Please.
Always a wise guy in the bunch.
Did not say anything bad, just entertaining. I really am looking forward to his segment.
What was bad?
Ok I thought you were talking about what me and Schroeder were talking about. If you were not then I apologies to you.
Got a feeling this will be another weak winter.
