Good Wednesday, everyone. The day before Thanksgiving is its own little holiday here on Kentucky Weather Center. The busiest travel day of the year gets it’s own special post based on one of the greatest movies ever made… Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
If you have seen it, you will probably agree with that statement. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out and I may even block you on twitter. 🙂
How can you not laugh at this?
Admit it, you’re laughing now.
This busy travel day is a nasty one for much of the country with two major storm systems ongoing across the country. The first one is pulling away from us today, but is causing all kinds of wind issues. Gusts of 40-50mph will be noted this morning with the numbers slowly coming down through the day.
Morning showers and a few storms will be racing across the state…
Temps this morning may be around 60 before dropping into the 40s this afternoon. Colder air comes into the region tonight and northern and northeastern Kentucky could have a close brush with a few snowflakes. The Hi RES NAM keeps showing this…
Temps are seasonally cold Thanksgiving into Black Friday…
Thanksgiving looks to feature a mix of sun and clouds with a small chance of showers in the west.
The next storm system is breaking barometric pressure records along the west coast. This storm rolls into the plains states and then cuts eastward into the northern Ohio Valley this weekend. Ahead of it, showers move in later Friday into Friday night. The NAM is close to having that start with a touch of frozen stuff in the north…
The rest of that system brings rounds of rain, some thunder and gusty winds for Saturday. As it moves through by Sunday morning, we will get in on a dry slot for a few hours. Winds look very gust as temps drop from the morning through the afternoon on Sunday. Energy diving in from the northwest will produce a band of rain and snow that switches to light snow Sunday night. Snow showers and a few squalls carry us into Monday. Light accumulations are very possible across central and eastern Kentucky.
The Canadian continues to lead the way with this…
So the Canadian has been telling the other models…
The GFS is still too progressive, but it’s finally beginning to catch on…
As much grief as I give the GFS, the Euro has been just as bad at times. It’s also finally grasping what the Canadian has been selling for days…
I will have updates later today, so check back. Good luck in finally reaching your Thanksgiving destination…
Make it a good one and take care.
I always look forward to checking in on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to see your “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” post! I hope you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving.
Chris, BEST THANKSGIVING WEATHER POST EVER!!! Thanks so much for this! 🙂
My favorite movie of all time!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!! Tell Dale Hello!! Lol!! “She’s short and skinny but she’s strong”!!
The baby came out sideways. She didn’t scream or nothin’!
Great movie with the best actors. Thanks Chris, with the weather we are having, every snow lover needs to watch this movie for great laughter. My favorite scene is when the train breaks down LOL. At the end of the movie it becomes a wonderful moving story. I plan to watch the movie tonight as I have the dvd.
1.24 inches of rain fell in my backyard overnight. We have been lucky on the high winds so far. I figure that will come with frontal p*a*s*s*age. Thanksgiving Day looks to be rather seasonable with some sunshine and high temperatures in the cool 40’s in my county of Taylor. If this weather pattern continues I’m not going to complain too much as the heating bills won’t be a problem this coming Winter.
Not good. I have absolutely clear skies and the wind is getting stronger. Looks like 50+ coming my way!
Just wondering, has anyone had any wind gusts today? Winds have been completely calm here since I got up this morning.
Gusts of 50 mph at Mason and Owen counties Mesonet
47 mph gust at Louisville MAI airport
I have had 45-50 mph gusts this morning just southwest of Louisville.
I guess I was expecting higher gusts since I have been in the clear skies for a while now.
0.59 in rain from this this system. There continues to be a big difference in precipitation accumulation for November from far Eastern KY vs. Western KY as the east is much drier, continuing to see the least amount of rainfall with each system, though still not dry like it was. I am down a little over an inch for November at 2.48 in through this morning, while many areas from Central to West KY are about an inch to even two above normal for November. For Meteorological Autumn, the rainfall discrepancy is substantially higher when comparing west to eastern locals over the 3 month timeframe.
Speaking of Steve Martin – I talked to my dad on the phone yesterday. Apparently Steve Martin lives in western NC. My dad said he saw him a couple of days ago at the grocery store and he’s also seen him other times. I think he sings with a band or something.
That is cool. I have been to Western NC a lot over the years. Living in Harlan, Asheville is almost as quick a drive as Lexington is, maybe 30 minutes longer. You hit 23 which turns into I-26, about 3 hours from Harlan, 155 miles. Steve Martin is one of my favorite actors. I have never personally met him, but I would imagine him as down to earth.
