Good afternoon, everyone. I wanted to drop by for a quick update on the potential for flooding later this week and the winter setup coming in behind that. Things appear to be on course for a very active beginning to 2020, not that this is a shock, now is it? 🙂
Let’s begin with the final day of 2019 and roll forward. Clouds are fairly thick and its a cold day across central and eastern parts of the state. A few flakes are flying under these clouds, with the north and east having the chance at an out and out snow shower…
Heavy rain rolls in Thursday and into Friday and this will bring along a renewed flood threat across the state. The ground is saturated and we have waterways that are swollen or still in flood, so it won’t take very much rain to cause issues again. Here’s my current risk map…
As colder air comes in behind this on Saturday, a period of light snow is likely to develop and take us through Saturday night.
The system early next week continues to be one to watch for winter weather…

WPC is all over this as possibly a big deal heavy rain event, maybe even a moderate flood risk for the Ohio/TN valleys. Some data shows a widespread 3 to 5 inches plus likely. Yikes, glad Harlan mostly missed out this past weekend, but I am still fairly wet down here. I have a bad feeling about this set-up!
With most of December being very dry around here, the Chicago area finally got a decent rainfall over the weekend, with most areas getting around or in excess of an inch of rain. 1.21 inches fell at O’Hare Airport Saturday night into Sunday morning, and from Sunday night into Monday morning.
Chicago is now at 49.46 inches of rain for the year, just .62 inches shy of the all-time wettest year on record.
It finally turned colder Monday afternoon, with some light snow occurring Monday night, as temps dropped down to the 20s. O’Hare received 1.5 inches of snow, and here in the SW suburbs we received only around half an inch, putting our season snowfall at a mere 5.5 inches.
Though it’s a windy, cold afternoon here with temps around 27 degrees, it appears that this is the coldest weather we’ll have for at least a week, as no major cold or snow is predicted here during that time.
I’m anxious for the below-normal temps to lock in later this month, as Chris has hinted at in some of his previous posts.

We hit 70s here Illinois Mike, both Saturday and Sunday. We are close to normal today, mid 40s but still haven’t had a morning low yet of 32 in over a week. My palms are growing in winter!

Wow the rain amounts hinting at 4-5 inches down state and TN. That is not good especially when the next system will be all rain for the same region. We all know the snow will stay North if the river.
I am with you calling for all rain, even next week. So if the low is to my West heading towards the Lakes, which they always do then the Southeast wind should really cut into my rain totals. Which is good as far as flooding issues. Any snow will be north of I70 just like today.
What??? Be positive.

In my area,we had only a 30% chance of snow today. So, I’m not surprised it didn’t happen. I am looking forward to the potential of next week. I’m being realistic, though. It hasn’t panned out so far this winter. I’m not getting my hopes up. Tracking it and such is fun, however!
