Good Sunday, everyone. It’s Groundhog Day, but it hasn’t been the same since Bluegrass Bubba got run over by an ice cream truck years ago. I think it’s how he would have wanted to go. 😉 This big day is also Super Bowl Sunday, but Mother Nature is quite the scene stealer. Gorgeous weather shows up out there today.
This nice weather doesn’t stay with us very long as another active setup shows up in the week ahead. We will take a look at that and look much farther down the weather road.
Highs today are around 60 with skies becoming mostly sunny. A few clouds filter in on Monday with readings deep into the 60s. Those clouds will produce rain around here as early as Monday night into Tuesday as the first of several waves of low pressure roll through here. Heavy rains are a good bet in this setup and we even have the potential for some snow before the week is over.
Here’s the GFS…
The European Weeklies have done a bang up job with this warm and snowless winter. As we look ahead through the middle of March, they keep our temps averaging above normal…
That doesn’t mean we can’t have some cold shots in there, but the overall numbers skew milder than normal.
In terms of precipitation, is there any question? Much above normal has been the norm for the past several years, minus last September when it didn’t rain…
The more things change, the more they stay the same!
I will throw you another update later today. Have a good one and take care.
The year without a winter, amazing how just a week ago the NWS had Feb skewing colder then normal.
They were wish casting just like the models keep doing a week out, desperate for change but then revert back to show the ugly truth. 🙁
The #RAINTRAIN and #PalmTreeWinter rolls on.
I rest my case.
RIP winter.
And the Groundhog says, “There will be 6 more DAYS of winter to go with 6 more WEEKS of rain. “
It looks like mowing season will begin early this season.
Yuck.
Yay Phil. Early spring.
February 2nd is the middle of Winter. I not ready to let the chance go that we still could have a very late Winter weather event here including one or two heavy wet snow events. At the present we can enjoy a very nice Sunny day, with mild, but somewhat windy weather. Just saw on the TV that Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow. That means Spring is here ! Always fun to watch and he may be right. We shall see. Have a great and quiet Sunday everyone, and those who watch the Super Bowl I hope your team wins.
I love cold winters. I love snow. The last three winters have been a real bummer. I loathe 35 – 45 degree days in the dead of winter. (I know we are past the midpoint now and things should start warming up…)
I also love hot summers.
I love the extremes.
We had over half of the month at 50 or higher for highs down in southern KY for January.
All aboard the KWC rain train!!!
Can’t make it? The rain train makes weekly appearances until August!!
How are you kids loving the “new normal?”
Ain’t climate change winters the best!! All aboard!!
Looks like Phil may be right this year. The flip flops will be coming out early to walk through the muddy puddles. Spring wins. I would celebrate but day after day of rain is no fun cold or warm.
It was a much-above normal January temperature-wise here in the Chicago Metro Area, and much-below normal snowfall-wise (much like you guys in Kentucky/Tennessee).
The average temp for Jan. at O’Hare Airport was 30.1 degrees, which is a significant 6.3 degrees above the normal of 23.8 degrees. Snowfall for the month was just 7.8 inches, which is 3 inches below the normal of 10.8 inches.
The NWS office in Romeoville in the SW suburbs recorded just 6.5 inches of snow for the month, and since Dec. 1st, only 8.2 inches has fallen there, which is 11.9 inches below the normal snowfall of 20.1 inches for the two months!
We’re at 11.7 inches of snow for the season, thanks to the rare snow we got in late October and early November.
Only two nights had lows in the single digits during Jan. (no below-zero temps), and only six days had highs below 32 degrees.
I’m pretty excited looking at the ICON and the Euro computer models, because both show what looks to be a pretty good snow for the Chicago area for the Thursday/Friday time frame. We shall see if it materializes. In the meantime, temps today are going to come close to the record high of 51 set in 1992.
Happy Super Bowl Sunday and Happy Groundhog Day, everyone!

Obviously, our climates are not similar, but we were also 6 to 8 degrees above average too with our monthly average temps coming in at the 40s areawide for January, more typical for the Deep South and not KY.
If anyone stands to gain some snow in February, it would be you in this set-up coming up as you will be close to the colder temp battle region but the less precip there could hurt you some. We look to get absolutely swamped down here and very warm! I have no nighttime lows reaching freezing predicted through the 15th!
Interesting stuff, thanks Terry!
I’m sure your palm trees will like the warm weather and the rain 🙂
🙂
They are slowly growing but really enjoying the 60s today. They will take off when we start having consistent 70 plus highs and lows above 50 again.
Just imagine when this cycle eventually ends.
Cold rain at 32 1/2 degrees. lol
Mid month the cold will be here!!!!! Kinda like the two week out storms of the past.
