Good evening, folks. We continue to track devastating flooding across southeastern Kentucky as our focus shifts quickly toward our snow event. This will cause travel issues late tonight into early Friday and may be an overachiever in some areas.
Flooding continues in many areas of southeastern Kentucky. Here’s a look at the current warnings…
The Cumberland River is headed into Major Flood Stage tonight into Friday…
The snow develops this evening across western Kentucky and expands as it moves east. With temps dropping into the upper 20s and low 30s, accumulating snow is likely. A Winter Weather Advisory is out for just about the entire state…
My thoughts on the snowfall remain the same…
Can we get some areas to hit the high end of that or exceed it? That’s possible and something we will have to watch.
The late afternoon model runs look like this…
GFS
I have you all set to do some snow tracking…
Paducah
Fort Campbell
Bowling Green
E-town
Louisville
Lexington
Covington area
Florence
Georgetown
Frankfort
Morehead
Winchester
Maysville
Mt. Vernon
Corbin
Mountain Parkway near Slade
I will have the very latest on WKYT tonight at 11pm and then again late tonight on KWC. Make it a good one and take care.
I hope Jimbo overachieves!
Charleston NWS finally issues an advisory for 1-3″. I will hope for 3 but expect 1 or less. I hope you at least get to see some flakes, I know you don’t need anything heavy at this time.
Actually, a very interesting set-up and MUCH BETTER at the last minute than what looked to be coming days ago….a rapidly strengthening low is forming in Mississippi right now and may just have enough cold to dump on us later as it travels along the App Mts. I like seeing a strengthening low with cold pouring in ahead of it….fingers crossed. π
I hope so. Probably our only shot this Winter. There is one thing to mess it up, that concerns me. The infamous Wedge. That pool of warm air that hangs out at the western base of the Appalachian Mountains. It is notorious for holding my temperature up, usually around 35 till most of the moisture is gone. I replayed to you earlier about how everything is already getting green here. The plants I am seeing are about 5 to 6 weeks ahead of schedule. This is much earlier than 2012.
I agree and not sure my temps can drop fast enough in this little warm hole in SE KY, lol. Still 40s here plus super wet/warm ground. I hope you get something worth looking at before it melts off. Next week is dreadful and even dangerous looking with more widespread rainfall and warmth.
What! I live in Union. Co and were one of the two counties not in. Winter weather advisory. I’m jealous ! Lol
Now casting shows the Ky/TN boarder with best chance of higher snow totals. Donβt see much at all for the Olio River counties.
More precip too than first advertised. Near an inch of new rain precip for Harlan from tonight through noon Friday. Geeze!
Starting to rain in Harlan and some heavy rain moving towards me from Knoxville. I may reach 6 inches afterall or after midnight.
Six inches is a lot of rain in a couple days especially in the Appalachian Mountains. It is devastating. I don’t think I have ever been thru a 5 to 6 inch rain event before. I had 3 inches in 1 hour back on Memorial Day weekend in 2018 and that was a mess. Luckily I live on a small hill and was untouched but it flooded areas that had never flooded before.
I hope I don’t get the cold rain shoulder only but it is so warm down here and snow is already falling west of me in the established cold air. I may miss this one barely as the cold isn’t in place yet here π
Snowing pretty good in Bardstown! I just let my dogs out and it was barely spitting, but when they came back in about 5-10 min’s later, deck & patio furniture have a nice coating and snow looks to be gaining momentum since. Getting under one or 5 of those heavier bursts is usually how we get our snow here in Nelson Co. anymore. Hoping it’s still snowing when I get up in the a.m. because it’s no fun for me if I can’t SEE it coming down!
Light snow in Nashville for about the last hour and a half, ground was too warm at first but now trying to stick a little to g`r`a`s`s and car tops. NWS Memphis just reported that officially 0.5 inch there although other parts of Memphis have closer to an inch of snow.
