Tracking Friday Flakes And A Spring Surge

Good Friday, everyone. It’s a small taste of winter weather blowing across the region today, bringing cold winds and some snow showers. Once we get through this, we will see spring take firm control of the pattern this weekend as temps take off. Next week keeps the spring temps, but will also throw rounds of spring storms into the mix.

Colder winds are blowing today and we will have some snowflakes accompanying it. The best chance for some snow showers and flurries will be across the east and southeast and that’s where some minor accumulations try to show up. The best chance is across the high ground along the Virginia border counties.

Winds will be gusty and that’s going to make those upper 30s to low 40s feel MUCH colder. Bundle up.

The weekend continues to look like a thing of beauty. Temps on Saturday reach 50 with a mostly sunny sky. That sets the stage for a serious spring surge for Sunday. Highs hit the low and middle 60s. Woot!

As I’ve been talking about, this is a very mild pattern settling in for the long haul. Well above normal temps are also likely to be accompanied by rounds of showers and thunderstorms. This is actually a pattern that looks to persist through the rest of March and into the first part of April, at least.

The Euro Weeklies for the next 45 days show this…

Rainfall anomalies

Were you really expecting something else?

I will have an update later today. Until then, let’s do some Friday flake tracking…

Once we get past this 48 hr cold spell, temps look very nice. Harlan will be in full bloom later next week with consistent above 60 highs. A lot of trees are close and just need about a week of warmth. Also, the gra$$ is getting there. I may be cutting even earlier this year than last year.

So was anyone correct about this winter forecast? The almanacs?…….I think NWS said above normal but they always say above normal no matter what …usually.
I know the winter folklore supposedly indicated a cold winter. And we’re also supposedly in a grand solar minimum……all of the indications were for a cold/snowy winter this and yet we had one of the wimpiest winters ever.

Wooly Worms were mostly red, lol. They got it right:)

The Persimmon seed showed a spoon last Fall, which means that we should have had ” lots of snow to shovel. ” At my place, there are no Woolly Worms, or more importantly no Honey Bees only the Carpenter Bee. Sunday, I put up my Carpenter Bee traps. At the end of the summer, I trap around thousand Carpenter Bees ! This has saved me lots of money and my log home.

Most everyone forecasted a cold snowy winter in the Ohio Valley.
Just goes to show you go take all those long range computers and throw them in the Ohio river. They just blew it plain and simple.

A meteorologist friend of mine told me that whatever happens in the upper levels of the atmosphere during the month of August will determine what the Fall and Winter will be.

In the late Summer of 1976, NOAA predicted a ” colder Fall and Winter ” which came true BIG TIME !

Snow pellets are falling now in my backyard. Maybe Terry and Jimbo and Bus will be adding to their Winter snow totals. My total snowfall since November 2019 to 2020 is, wait for it, 2.5 inches. Wow ! But Winter is not over yet. Still could get that ” Big one. “

    • Jimbo

I seriously doubt I will be adding to my total. Might see a few flakes in the air tonight. I think this is the last gasp from a very weak and ill Old Man Winter. I think you won the race to the bottom in the snow total this year with ease. Terry and I are still in a tight race.

Anyone heard nor seen TennMark? I haven’t been here on a daily basis and was concerned about him.
    Thanks for any info.

He commented the day before yesterday and is safe with no damage; he lives on the south side of the city.

    No snow, just mow.

Basically no precip here. I can’t tell if it flurries or white pedals blowing off the Bradford Pears at times, lol 🙂 A few sprinkles and flurries all day but not measurable as still sitting at 0.00 in. Very cold this evening though, wind is howling thanks to that rapidly intensifying low!
