Good evening, folks. Heavy rain and thunderstorms continue to roll across central and eastern Kentucky as we wait on the main low to move in overnight. This will bring a line of thunderstorms that could be strong or severe. It will also crank out some big winds into Monday.
The SPC continues with the severe weather risk across the region…
Some areas have already picked up more than 2″ of rain with the heaviest now targeting the eastern half of the state. To our southwest, another line of severe thunderstorms is developing and working to the northeast ahead of the low. This has a lot of wind energy with it and it won’t take much for the storms to tap into that.
High winds of 50mph or greater will be possible tonight and early Monday, with or without severe storms.
Temps drop on Monday as skies become partly sunny. This cold shot may also be accompanied by a weak wave of low pressure late Tuesday and Tuesday night. We run the risk for a period of light snow across parts of central and eastern Kentucky during this time. The NAM is in always overly excited for something like this…
I wouldn’t be betting on that one just yet.
The EURO is a little more realistic…
I leave you with your Sunday evening storm trackers…
Possible Watch Areas
Enjoy the evening and take care.
A dud rain event (thus far) for northern KY and southern IN, at least going by what the NAM and Euro were spewing the past several days. That band of 2-3 inches, with local 4 inches, along the Ohio River from the NAM never materialized. Most locations in this area have had about a half inch thus far. I doubt the overnight activity will amount to a whole lot more on a widespread basis.
The GFS has been FAR superior to the NAM and Euro with this event. It never bought into those heavy rain totals along the Ohio River. It seems the NAM the past several months has had issues with predicted QPF totals that are too high.
Some big rain drops! Reminds me of chubby rain from Bowfinger- Funny movie!
Wind advisory wasn’t supposed to go in to effect to midnight. Where’s the warning for people? Its bad here in southeast ky/southern wv
Trees down everywhere in Knox County. Roofs blown of buildings. Significant damage reported all over. You could here the trees falling all over downtown.. It will be an interesting drive tomorrow morning when the sun comes up.
Shame really, no flood watches, high wind watches/warnings. I am quickly heading towards the 3 inch rainfall mark and obvious that the Cumberland will be near or above flood stage tomorrow. The GFS showed, almost identical, runs of 3 to 5 inches of rain in far SE KY but no watches. GURR!!
And here I was, dumb enough to thinkthe NWS has a clue. 🙂
Possible tornado/tornadoes have hit the Chattanooga area. Areas of East Ridge and Cleveland have many flooded roadways, making for difficult travel reaching homes of affected areas of damage
Wow wind was awful around Pikeville hail rain. Some business I think lost parts of their roof.I felt like I was in the Wizard of Oz and the witch and Toto went by my window.
