Good Friday everyone. Our weekend is about to get underway with a bit of a rise in temperatures here in the bluegrass state. This will take us closer to normal and things may go slightly above normal by Thanksgiving day. It’s just beyond the holiday that some early season fun and games begin.

Temps today through Sunday will run in the upper 20s by morning and 50s during the afternoon. Our skies will feature a mix of sun and clouds and this will be perfect for those of us putting up Christmas lights.

A weak moving system will work our way by Tuesday and Wednesday and should bring a couple of showers. This won’t have very much moisture to work with, but will knock our temps down just a tad.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday look good, right now. Temps should be able to sneak into the low 60s with a fair amount of sunshine. It’s once we get later in the weekend and into the following week that things begin to change up quite a bit.

I’ve been beating the drum for a while now on a change toward wintry during the last week of November into early December. The models are now starting to back up my theory. I’ve been pointing out the amount of blocking showing up on various model runs of late and that continues to be the case.

The Canadian Model seems to be in a big hurry to get this change going and offers up something for the Sunday after Thanksgiving…

The other models aren’t as fast with the change and suggest it taking until the middle and end of the following week. The GFS literally brings the polar vortex all the way into southern Canada during this time…

That pattern is so blocked up, it looks like it’s been on a cheddar cheese only diet. Feel free to quote that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s interesting to seeย the computer model that matches the forecast pattern with similar patterns from a similar time frame in years past…

Among the years showing up: 1995, 1977, 2009 and 2010. All of those years produced a lot of cold and snow across our part of the world. That doesn’t mean this one will wind up the same way, but it can’t be a bad thing to see those years listed.

For the record… my winter forecast comes your way Monday evening at 6pm on WKYT. It will then hit the blog at some point thereafter.

Have a great Friday and take care.
