Good Wednesday and welcome to another wild weather day across the bluegrass state. We have a rare blizzard hitting parts of our region today as a powerhouse storm rolls across the Tennessee Valley. While the west sees the blizzard, the rest of the state sees everything from a nasty mix to heavy rains before snow.

Some brief thoughts on the current storm:

– Western Kentucky continues to be the bullseye with 40mph winds and the potential for 6″-12″ of snow. Blizzard conditions will be noted.

– Northern areas of the state will be the next area to keep an eye on. The heavy snow line is going to be floating around the Covington area. It will be interesting to watch that Covington to Louisville corridor to see just how close the heaviest snow gets.

– A cold rain will fall across much of central and eastern Kentucky into the afternoon hours. Rain will change to snow from west to east late today and accumulations through Tonight will range from coatings to up to 3″ for some. I do expect a moderate band of snow to set up somewhere across this region.

– Winds today into tonight will gust to 40mph.

I have some traffic cams from the highest impact areas:

While we are tracking this storm, it’s time to focus on the next one that arrives by Friday evening into Saturday. This one may very well force us back into THREAT mode by later today or tonight. This is not a strong storm like the one we are seeing right now. Instead, this will be a west to east moving storm across the south that then turns the corner up the east coast. Here’s a sample of some of the latest models…

The next one is lined up behind that one and may impact our weather as we usher in the new year. I will have updates as needed today. Make it a great one and take care.
