Happy New Year!! We continue to track snow, sleet and light rain across the bluegrass state as we close out 2012. This stuff will increase as we roll through the evening into the overnight hours and will likely create some slick travel for some areas.
Here’s my latest thinking…
Southeastern Kentucky has a chance to pick up a little light snow late tomorrow into tomorrow night and that is something else to watch out for.
For my Lexington folks… The NWS in Louisville says at 7am there was only a Trace of snow on the ground. Ummm… try 1-2″ everywhere I look. What say you?
Happy New Year and take care.
Well the NWS is a government ran office … we can see how our government runs ….
If the NWS was referring to the amount of snow on the ground at the airport they were correct. A lot of concrete & asphalt surrounding the ground.
Are you sure? I’ve had questions about the official Lexington snow measurement since they closed the Lexington office in 1996.
I was talking about SDF.
I think Chris mentioned Lexington specifically, but I could be wrong! I totally agree with you about SDF. Louisville’s official measurements ought to be at Bowman or the NWS office.
Morgan County is where the battle sets up again…..the snow line is at the southern tip of Morgan County once gain….usually Morgan is split however. Chris, Magoffin County is wondering why they always get left out….lol. Have pity on the hometown folks….throw some snow our way…lol
Richmond was literally 3 miles away from accumulating snow with this last system, and so far, that line has not made any progress further south.
Just stating the facts.
Happy new year!
Yep – 0″ at my house in Richmond, drove to Lexington today and just a mile or so north of Richmond and you could easily see the difference. Amazing, time after time.
Will wait until morning to see what we get, in the meantime…Happy New Year everybody!!!!
No harm no foul, since this is more North I64 started than the last one.
favored not started… How did Swype come up with that?
Swype must use the same algorithms as the outlook models 😉
Still say “winter storm” is an oxymoron in ky….lol
To the great folks on the blog and the man that runs it,
Wishing you a joyous and snowy New Year!
Ditto!!!
What BubbaG said!!!
What Bubba & Coffelady said!!!!!
Seems the NWS in Louisville is majoring in incompetency.
Yeah, CB, still have way more than a “T” on the ground now!
Happy New Year, Chris! Hope 2013 likes southern Ky more than 2012 has….but it looks doubtful!
In memory of Dandy Don Meredith who we lost this year: Everybody together now…. Turn out the lights, the party’s over!
Ugggmm
Yea – definitely lost some snow, but still definitely more than a trace.
Happy 2013 🙂
Wishing everyone a Happy and Safe New Year, Thanks Chris for all of your hard work that you do for us!!!!!! And those of us in the education field are REALLY hoping for some SNOW days this year!!!!!!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! From the big city of Sadieville…which by the way still has a good coating of snow.
Chris latest thinking a coating to 2 inches, big time spread impact wise, looks like a bland weather pattern setting in for a while, hopefully it is gearing up for a thumping in mid to late January?
As I sit here in the Richmond Olive Garden, my thoughts on snow being a big impact mid January and beyond: The check
Is in the mail 😉
That is my sentiment at least for us South of the river dwellers.
Bubba–don’t worry about the weather while at the Olive Garden. Just enjoy some great food, drinks, and family time. Eat enough carbs to induce a coma-sleep through winter and then be surprised at how much snow Richmond receives 🙂
I try to avoid a lot of carbs in the evening, so got chicken and salad. Well, there was a side is sgetti’ and a few bread sticks…..
At least I was driving, so no fermented beverages! My wife usually gets to have a drink. She works a lot of hours this time of year, so I offer her my turn for drink.
Happy New Year bloggers and bloggettes 🙂
I would say my NYs resolution is to be more positive with posts, but that will take an event to bust the trend. Else I would be faking.
Chris, thanks for another year of the blog! May you and your family have a blessed 2013! Happy New Year fellow bloggers!
33 deg and a mix of rain/snow/sleet coming down right now, hope it changes over to snow!!!!!!!!
35 and rain in Wilmore… 🙁
Sleet mixed with rain in Frankfort, I think the mostly snow line should be further north, temp holding at 33.9!
Cold unforgiving rain in Louisville. That’s all.
Replace the word “gin” with “rain”. It works 🙂

Ha! This made me laugh out loud! I love Kiss! Thanks!
Thanks, Chris, for all you do for all your weather watchers! Everyone has learned who to go to for the weather. Biggest question asked, “What does Chris say?” We know that you will give us the best forecast. Happy New Year to all you weather watchers! Hope we get some “white stuff” in Estill County!
Yes, we have the Sheppard (CB), but no sheep (big snow) 😉 Heck, south of the river has lowered the bar lower than Honey Boo Boo. A medium snow may be a stretch for us.
Dag on it, shepherd. You would think I would learn to not trust Swype by now 🙁
33.2 in Frankfort, the coldest rain on earth here now, the warm air aloft looks to bring in the new year 🙁
Freezing rain in Northern Scott Co. Not what I wanted to see…if it doesn’t change over soon, we’ll be celebrating the new year in the dark.
Cold rain in Clark Co. And nothing else.
Happy New Year everyone! Nothing but a 34 degree COLD RAIN here in Nichvegas…
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doesn’t look like we’ll even get a dusting in Louisville. Still raining and temps well north of freezing.
Forecast tonight a bust, the mostly snow north of 64 is mostly rain, I hope it goes away soon, it is eating what snow we got he other day!
If it was only snow in Louisville would have been a nice over performer. Probably safer that its not
Before I commence to celebrate, I want to thank Chris for his time and effort he puts into his site. And keeping your cool when we are fuming about the disastrous forecast models. Happy New Years to every devoted readers & commentators at this blog.
Happy New Year, CB and everyone in the KYWxCtr family!
First for 2013. 🙂
Dang. Tied with Neil!
🙂
34 and rain here in Shelbyville. Happy New Year!
At least the drought will be helped with a cold rain.
temp just went up from 33 to 34 deg,, Whats up with that!!!! LOL That is going in the wrong direction!!!!!!!! It is still a rain/snow/sleet mix! Come on snow, this rain is melting what snow we had left on the ground! : (
It went from 34 to 40 in Louisville once the precip started. Back down to 36 but its stayed a steady heavy rain for about 5 hours.
i just walked outside and it is slushy on the sidewalk so i guess the rain is maybe freezing on the surface, hope it doesnt stick to the power lines!!!!!!
Hello everyone! Happy New Year to all of you! Looking forward in 2013 to those awesome weather discussions that go on here! Chris, thank you for another year of providing all of us with one of the best FREE weather communities available on the Web. It’s great seeing so many familiar “faces” already! 🙂 I haven’t seen a comment by Mitch yet – is he still around? Again, Happy New Year to all! May 2013 be good to each of you!
2012 was the warmest year on record for Louiville. We were a whopping 4 degrees above the previous record. Hard to have winter with a climate like that.
Just came in from a neighbor’s house welcoming in the New Year … light rain and squishy ground. Looking forward to what Tuesday brings. Happy New Year to all bloggers and Mr. Baily!!!
Well out in the east, Morgan County sits at 37* and isn’t budging. I would say it was raining too, but you’ve read that 30 times already.
I’m goin to bed. Happy New Year to all and to all a good nap.
NWS out of Louisville must be getting there reading of snow at the bias airport as usual. Northern Jefferson Co in Louisville got 4 inches solid with the last system. Jefferson county has a trace to as much a 2 maybe 2.5 inches.
Speaking of messed up snow totals……….When someone mentioned that Lexington’s biggest 24 hour snow total was 13 something inches I had to scratch my head because I know the Feb’98 storm brought more than that in the first 24 hours of that storm. The data says 11 inches (the first 24 hours) of the 98 storm. I swear that has GOT to be wrong. IT was WAY more than that. Even though it continued to snow DAYS after and kept accumulating and I think we ended up with 20 inches. Walking across the neighbors to borrow their snow shovel the snow was coming up to my waist. It was a very deep snow. It’s unbelievable to me that there are no pictures to be found online of that storm but I can’t find a single picture.
I mentioned that but only based on the NWS data.
Unfortunately I have to stick with what I see in the trend as my overall winter forecast. Dry and Cold…….Warm Wet….
For some reason moisture never meets cold. The real last good snow we got was blizzard of 98. I am afraid big snows are a thing of the past here. 🙁
