Good evening, my friends. Extreme is a word you are going to be hearing a lot about in the coming days. We have extreme warmth possible for a few days next week and that will be followed by an extreme blast of winter. Once that blast moves in… it’s going to stick around for a while.
The week ahead will grow milder by the day and will get downright warm by Friday and Saturday. Highs in the 60s look to be a strong possibility and I can’t rule out a few records biting the dust.
That comes crashing down at some point Sunday into Monday as the cold begins to overwhelm the pattern. I can’t want to see the temp maps during that time because a 40-50 degree temp swing is likely to show up.
Once the cold gets in.. it’s game on from there. Check out the deep freeze look on the GFS 850 temp departure map for the middle of the following week…
Notice how the east coast remains a bit milder than normal as the plains sink into the icebox. That setup would imply a couple of storm systems rolling up the eastern slopes of the Appalachian mountains. Those would, obviously, be snow producers for us.
This would be the tip of the iceberg (pun intended) with the extreme winter setup moving in for the second half of the month into February.
See you guys later tonight. Enjoy the rest of your evening and take care.
Chris I really really appreciate the time you give us bloggers! Thanks so much. I dont post much either, but I am a regular reader. (several times a day)!
Ditto for me as well!!
CB, I appreciate your time and effort as well. I don’t post as much as I used to for several reasons, but I ALWAYS check it every day. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Oh, I so hope we get an old school snow out of this!!!! My twins would love to see some major snow!
Continuing to polish and wax the unused snowboards….price tags still on….hoping I don’t have to return them.
I don’t post much either, but I sure make good use of reading this blog. I appreciate all of the time and effort you put into it, Chris. And I enjoy the comments section, too. Looking forward to some real winter weather! OH, the anticipation! 🙂
Looks very promising for snow fans after this upcoming January thaw, thanks Chris.
Todd, help me out here. Is he talking about the week of Jan. 15th?
Looks like starting next Sunday or Monday, then Katie bar the door on cold and snow!
Are u talking about the week of Jan. 15th???
This is gonna be fun!
So now all of us teachers are thinking, “One week on, one week off!”
CB–I see the temp maps, but what kind of temps are you talking about? I know it is too early to be specific but are we talking about a run of days with highs in the 20’s and 30’s (maybe teens with a snowpack) and lows in the single digits and teens?
Thanks Chris for the update!
Us teachers will need a snow day about Martin Luther King Day time frame. A 4 days weekend would be wonderful about then!! 😉
Everyone have a great week and enjoy the warmth while it lasts!
I need some snow days to make some cash. 😉
Nope! the kids have missed enough school due to the holidays and illness. Keep on teachin’! 😉 🙂
