Good Wednesday, folks. It’s another much colder than normal day taking shape across the bluegrass state as old man winter rolls on. He will loosen his icy grip on us by the weekend, but there are strong indications of another big shot of cold coming our way for the first week of April. Yes… that stinks.
Today will feature temps in the upper 30s and lower 40s with scattered showers of snow, sleet and rain.
Thermometers will climb a bit by Thursday and Friday, but I’m becoming more concerned for the possibility of some clouds and chilly sprinkles. That’s something to keep an eye on.
Saturday continues to look like the best weather day we see for a while and that’s just sad. It’s not like the day would win a beauty contest, but it is being compared to some ugly ducklings and is the winner by default. Temps will hit the upper 50s to near 60 as winds begin to gust up ahead of our next system.
A cold front moves in for Easter Sunday and will bring showers and scattered thunderstorms. A colder push of air moves in behind it into early Monday…
That will set the stage for another shot of cold air sweeping in early in the new week. The front will put the brakes on across the Tennessee Valley and that’s when things may get ugly. A wave of low pressure will develop along the front and bring chilly rain and even some wet snow back into the region. The GFS…
The European Model has latched on to a similar idea, but is a day later…
How does the first week of April look in terms of temps? A lot like we’ve been seeing lately…
The pattern is slowly evolving toward spring and a switch to normal temps or above normal readings is likely for the middle and end of April. As I’ve been pointing out… that is likely to set us up for an active thunderstorm season into May and likely into the summer.
Have a great Wednesday and take care.
No more snow sir. Im tired of it!!!
In 1993, the same year as the blizzard, we had severe storms in KY on June 4. It was warm and after it stormed it got chilly. We lost electricity for several hours and there were big trees uprooted all over. We also had snow on October 31.
I hope that thunderstorm pattern isn’t awful. I hate even thinking about it. I hate being so worried. :/ I would love to skip through all that. By thunderstorm pattern, does that mean severe weather for every single time we get some thunderstorms coming through?
I hate tornadoes and I sure hope we don’t get a lot or even any. 🙁 sorry to complain but I hate this time of year, I use to love Spring.
James I feel the same way hate storms so bad I just want to get spring, summer over with.the tornado that hit west liberty has scare me to death, I hope I never see anything like that again,I just wish it was fall again and we were getting ready for the holidays and more snow, maybe we will get he fall stuff but I think our snows in ky are in the past I would really like to move to a colder climate but the hubby job is here so I guess I will just have to stay but I really hate ky now….
Marsha don’t let something that is a once in a lifetime occurrence steal your joy. I understand being scared, but don’t hate this wonderful state because of it.
Jeff I am trying so hard not to because I used to love ky….
James, just be prepared. Have your severe weather action plan in place and don’t worry too much now. It’s still too early to pin anything down.
Accuweather shows a break into spring by weekend and not letting up..hate to say it Chris but I hope you are wrong here lol
I hope Chris is wrong on this one as well but put no faith into “inaccuweather” as the mets on that site are mostly morons who got their meteorological degrees from a cracker jack box.
don’t mention accuweather around here, you’ll get bashed and run off … notice how there are not many on here anymore … certain ones try to dominate what or what not to say ….
What’s wrong with the server?
Its been dodgy for the last few weeks its getting worse and worse
Chris, having major problems trying to comment. Server won’t allow it. As far as the weather goes, please, SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!! I am afraid from what you said, we will go straight from winter into summer, without getting some pretty spring weather. Maybe Mother Nature will decide enough is enough, and give us some spring. Thanks, Chris, for all you do,.
Here’s hoping that next week cold air misses us to the north, spring its time for you to shine!
Accuweather put out a interesting article stating that the greatest risk of severe storms including tornado’s will set up shop over the mississippi, ohio, and tennessee valleys. All ok KY is in the red zone for spring into summer. Accuweather is stating that 2013 will actually be more active for severe weather than 2012. This will be two years in a row will the valley states will dominate in severe weather over the central and plain states.
All of KY, not all ok ky my bad.
Just so happens that today is the anniversary of the tornado outbreak of March 27 1890, including the tragic F4 tornado at Louisville (link here). The deadliest day from twisters in KY history.
A few days ago was anniversary of a 1937 tornado (an F4) that touched down south of Lexington. It then narrowly missed downtown Winchester, or the death toll could have been much higher.
Interesting parallels between the winter of 2011-12 and of 1889-90. Both winters were ridiculously warm. Both winters were during La Niña cycles. Both had frequent January/Feb tornadoes (including an F4 in far western Kentucky in January 1890).
Then to top things off, both seasons had exceptionally violent March months (although the rest of 2012 beyond March 2 was relatively quiet).
While there was some tornadic activity earlier this year with this warm winter, at least the recent cold has put a chill on our severe wx so far (but as both CB and the Accuweather article mentioned, that could change).
You do realize the only reason they (Accuweather) says that is because It has already been an active year in the south. Guess what? I could say 2013 will be an active severe weather season for the south after 3 months of it being so.
Let’s get March over and give April a try. This has to go down as one of the worst months of March that I can remember. Average high going to be around 50, and not many days to get out and enjoy the outdoors. I’m ready to get my shorts out.
After Richmond’s 3.5 inches of snow and never more than 1 inch at a time, I am officially done with winter. (We had an average winter here, 8 winters in Richmond for me and about 30 inches of snow – total.)
I cannot wait until warm weather is here. My goodness ole man winter please you need to go home and let the sunshine and warmer temps begin. CB thank you for awesome job you do. We all are so blessed to have you.
